Abstract

A hydrological routing study for Al Qurna Marsh was carried out to estimate the hydrological state within the marsh for the Present and future conditions of the marsh. The water surface elevation, area and storage within the marsh at the present and for the future conditions were estimated and the effect of uncontrolled outlets on the hydrological and water quality state of the marsh at the present conditions was specified. The salt mass - balance equation was used to estimate the inflow and outflow discharges that required for reducing the effect of evapotranspiration on the water quality and flashing out the accumulated mass of salts and then improving the marsh water quality. This equation was applied on the future conditions of themarsh and inflow and outflow discharges that required for this purposes were estimated. Results of the hydrological routing for the present conditions showed that the maximum water surface area is 785 km2 which occur during October. While it is 431km2 during September and it can not be increased during these months since the outlet of the marsh is uncontrolled. The TDS concentration within the marshincreases during the months of high evapotranspiration although the inflow increases during these months. For the future conditions, the inflow discharges required to sustain the restoration requirements must be increased to decrease the deterioration in the marsh water quality. These discharges increase with the increase in the marsh areaduring the months of high evapotranspiration values.

Abstract

Al Husa'chi River is one of the three main branches of Al Ka’hla River in Maissangovernorate. Its length is 25 km. the river directly feeds Al Huwayza Marsh by overpasspipes at its end. It is also used for irrigating the nearby agricultural areas. A study forevaluating the hydraulic performance of the river has been carried out in order to developits ability to accommodate the excess inflow required for feeding the marsh and thesurrounding agricultural projects. All the necessary hydraulic measurements, needed toconstruct rating curves, at stations along the river course were carried out for a period ofsix months. A steady one dimensional hydraulic model has been prepared to simulatethe flow in this river using the HEC-RAS software (Version 3.1.3). The calibration andverification processes of the model have been carried out by making use of the fieldmeasurements. The obtained maximum allowable discharge of this river for the presentconditions is ranged from 20m3/sec to 35m3/sec for the water surface elevation of themarsh from 7.0m to 2.8m amsl, respectively, and the first flood section is located at23.5km downstream of the river inlet. The required cross sections to develop the capacityof the river have been obtained considering the marsh and agricultural requirements

نهر الحسيجي هو أحد الفروع الرئيسية الثلاثة لنهر الكحلاء في محافظة ميسان . طول نهرالحسيجي 25 كم. يغذي هذا النهر هور الحويز ة مباشر ة عن طريق معبر انبوبي في نهاية النهر .ويستخدم في أرواء الأراضي الزراعية المجاورة له. تم إج راء دراسة لتقييم الأداء الهيدروليكي لهذاالنهر لتطوير قابل يته على إستيعاب الزيادة في التصاريف المطلوبة لتغذية الهور والمشاريع الزراعية . تمإجراء كل القياسات الهيدروليك ية اللازمة لإيجاد منحنيات الإست تباع في محطات على طول مجرى النهرولمدة ستة أشهر.تم إعداد نموذج هيدروليكي للجريان الثابت احادي البعد لمحاك اة الجريان في هذا النهر باستخداموتم إجراء عمليات المعايرة والتحقق من النموذج بالإستفادة من .HEC-RAS (Version برنامج ال ( 3.1.3القياسات الحقلية إن اعلى تصريف مسموح به للنهر في الضروف الحالية هو 20 م 3/ثا الى 35 م 3/ثاعندما تكون مناسيب الهور من 7م الى 2.8 م فوق مستوى سطح البحر و المقطع الفيضاني الاول يقععلى بعد 23.5 كم من بدية النهر . ولغرض تطوير الطاقة الإستيعابية للنهر فقد تم إيجاد المقاطعالعرضية اللازمة اخذين بنظر الإعتبار إحتياجات الهور والزراعة.
