Enforcement of Epoxy with Silica Fume and Carbon Fiber

Abstract

A composite material has been prepared using epoxy resin as a matrix, reinforced with silica fume, carbon fiber, and their hybrid (mixture of silica fume and carbon fiber). Samples were prepared in a fabricated mold with dimensions according to the American Standards for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The additions of silica fume, carbon fiber, and mixture of them were with weight ratios of 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 wt.%. Properties of this composite material are determined; hardness, compression, and ultrasonic. The results showed that the mechanical properties increases with increasing of silica fume ratio up to 2 wt.%, and for higher than of 2 wt.% they were decrease, whereas the addition of carbon fiber and mixture of carbon fiber with silica fume powder correspondingly enhances the properties up to 2 wt.% and fixed on its values.

Abstract

This paper covers the effect of nanocarbon black powder (N220) on the somephysical properties (thermal conductivity and water absorption) of unsaturated andepoxy resins filled with nanocarbon black powder (N220). The polymernanocomposites, were prepared with (1 to 10 wt%) of carbon black nanoparticlesusing ultrasonic wave bath machine dispersion method. The results had shownthermal conductivity of unsaturated and epoxy resins improved by (131.37% and78%) respectively, at 10wt. %. The water absorption reduction by (55.41% at 4 wt.%,51.76% at 6 wt.%) for unsaturated polyester and epoxy nanocomposite, respectively.

Abstract

The effect of fungi colonies on fatigue of 7075 aluminum alloys was studied for specimens corroded at different media. 57 specimensof aluminum alloys were submerged in Shat-Arab water (Sh.A.W) for four months at different conditions (at light media (9 fungi colonies), dark media (80 fungi colonies))and then applying constant fatigue tests after removing the specimens from the corrosion media . The results show that the fungi colonies can corroded Al alloy the reduction of pre-corroded specimens at light media (9 fungi colonies) was 13% and for specimens at dark media (80 fungi colonies) was 22% , and a nonlinear damage model was proposed to predict the cumulative corrosion fatigue life

Abstract

The objective of this work is to investigate the salt water effects on fatiguedegradation, and stress-life relationship. A series of reversed fatigue experiments wereconducted on (carbon+ glass) / PMMA of salt water environments. Results indicate thatthe composite degrade during cycling. Exposure to salt water (salt water is used tosimulate the sea water) provides the most significant reduction in fatigue life. Thecorrosion environment reduces the fatigue strength by 61% compared to dry fatigue.Based on previous damage model [16], corrosion – fatigue nonlinear damage model ispresented in this paper, which contains one material constant; the inverse slope (α) of theS-N curve. Six specimens of two levels loading of composite material were used to verifythe present model; the results showed that the predicted life is in good agreement with theexperimental results.

الغرض من ھذا العمل ھو للتحقق من تأثیر المحلول الملحي على عمر الكلال حیث اجریت سلسلة منتجارب الكلال للمادة المتراكبة المتكونة من الیاف الكربون والیاف الزجاج والیاف البرلون مع البولي مثیلمثیكرلات .اظھرت النتائج ان المحلول الملحي (الماء المشابھ لماء البحر ) یقلل من عمر مقاومة الكلالةبسنب 61 % .اعتمادا على انموذج الضرر السابق ( 16 ) في ھذا البحث تم تقدیم انموذج ضرر لا خطيللتاكل الكیمیاوي الكلالي والذي یحتوي على ثابت واحد للمادة والذي ھو مقلوب میل منحني الاجھاد –عدد الدورات حیث اعطت نتائج تخمینات العمر توافقا جیدا مع النتائج العملیة.

Abstract

Fatigue damage and life results from the conjoint actions of cyclically applied stress and external environment (chemical) are studied for aluminum (3003-H18) alloy to explore load-environment interaction in fatigue which is essential to the formulate rational life prediction of component and structures. In this study, a modified corrosion-fatigue model (MCFM) based on the S-N curve and taking into account the effect of load history and corrosion effect was introduced. The obtained results from this model are in good agreement with the experimental results and show a 2.492 safety factor while Palmgren-Miner (PM) rule gave 1.372 factor of safety. The corrosion environment reduces the fatigue endurance limit by 5.06% compared to dry fatigue

تم دراسة تداخل نتائج ضرر وعمر الكلال تحت الاجهادات الدورية المسلطة والمحيط التأكلي الخارجي لسبيكة الالمنيوم (3003-H18) لمعرفة تداخل الحمل مع المحيط التاكلي والذي هو اساسي لتخمين عمر الكلال. في هذه الدراسة تم اقتراح نموذج متطور لتداخل الكلال مع المحيط التاكلي لتقييم الضرر المتراكم معتمدا على منحني S-N وياخذ بنظر الاعتبار تأثير تتابع الاجهادات وتأثير المحيط التاكلي . النتائج المستحصلة من الانموذج المقترح كانت لها تطابق جميع النتائج العملية حيث اعطت عامل امان 2.492 بينما نظرية (PM) اعطت عامل امان 1.37 مقارنة مع النتائج العملية وان المحيط التاكلي يقلل من حد الكلال بنسبة 5.06% نسبة الى الكلال الجاف.

Abstract

The fatigue behavior of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy under constant and variable amplitude loading was investigated in air for as-received and pre-corroded specimens in 3.5% NaCl corrosive solution for 77 days. The experimental results presented that the tests of fatigue life on pre-corroded samples with and without ultrasonic peening revealed a significant reduction in life related with the presence of corrosion defects before cyclic loading. In state of unpeened specimens the constant S-N fatigue strength curve was decreased by 4.5% due to immersed the specimens in corrosive 3.5% NaCl solution for 77 days, while in state of ultrasonically peened specimens for 10 sec. per line and 2.5 joul energy the reduction of S-N curve decreased to 2.2% due to the beneficial effect of this treatment for increasing the corrosion-fatigue life. The improvement of fatigue life and corrosion-fatigue life of specimens when applying of ultrasonic peening was 8.69% for dry fatigue life and 2.3% for corrosion-fatigue interaction. The results of cumulative corrosion-fatigue tests indicated that the life of corroded specimens under the effect of ultrasonic peening treatment improved to approximately (3% ـــ 2.25%) for low-high and high-low sequences.

Abstract

Experimental work had been done to demonstrate the effect of nanocarbon black particles (N220) contents on the mechanical and tribological behavior of unsaturated polyester nanocomposite prepared via ultrasonic wave dispersion method. The results showed that the mechanical and tribological behavior was enhanced when the nanocarbon black particles content was increased up to 2%wt. and then decreased after that. The improvements in compressive strength and flexural strength are (16.13% at 2%wt. and 25.2% at 1%wt.), respectively, While The improvements in the hardness and wear resistance are (14.65% and 25.76% ) at 2%wt. , respectively.

تم أجراء دراسة تجريبية لبيان تاثير كمية حبيبات الكاربون الاسود النانوي (N220) في السلوك الميكانيكي و الترايبولوجي لراتنج البوليستر المدعم بها بطريقة التشتت بالموجات فوق الصوتية .بينت النتائج العملية ان السلوك الميكانيكي والترابيولجي للمتراكب النانوي يتحسن عند زيادة النسبة المئوية إلى حد 2% من الكاربون الأسود النانوني وبعد ذلك ينخفض, حيث ان نسبة التحسن لمقاومة الانضغاط ومقاومة الانحناء هي (16.13% عند النسبة المئوية 2% و25,2% عند النسبة المئوية 1% ) على التوالي, بينما مقاومة الصلادة والبلى تحسنت بنسبة (14,65% و25,76% ) عند النسبة المئوية (2%) على التوالي . الكلمات الدالة : مقاومة الانضغاط , مقومة الانحناء , مقاومة الصلادة , مقاومة البلى ,الكاربون الأسود النانوي والبوليستر الغير مشبع .

Abstract

The study covers the effect of nanocarbon black particles (N220) on some important mechanical properties of epoxy reinforced with it [carbon black nanoparticles]. The nanocomposites were prepared with (1 to 10 wt. %) of carbon black nanoparticles using ultrasonic wave bath machine dispersion method. The results had shown that the tensile strength , tensile modulus of elasticity, flexural strength and impact strength are improved by (24.02%,7.93%,17.3% and 6% ) respectively at 2wt % .The compressive strength and hardness are improved by (44.4%, 12%) at 4wt%.

يتضمن البحث بيان تاثير حبيبات الكاربون الاسود النانوية (N220) على بعض الخواص الميكانيكية المهمة لراتنج الايبوكسي المدعم بها. تم تحضيرالمتراكبات النانوية بنسب وزنية مختلفة ( 1-10 % ) من الكاربون الاسود النانوي باستخدام طريقة التشتت بالموجات فوق الصوتية. وبينت النتائج ان مقاومة الشد ومعامل المرونه ومقاومة الكسر ومقاومة الصدمة قد تحسنت بنسبة (24.02% و7.93% و17.3% و6% ) على التوالي عند نسبه وزنيه (2%)، اما مقاومة الانضغاط والصلادة فقد تحسنت بنسبة (44.4% و21% ) عند نسبه وزنيه (4%).
