Abstract

Background and objectives: The transmission of oral pathogens to impression and subsequently on to gypsum casts had been demonstrated. The aim of the study to investigate the effect of disinfections of type III dental stone casts by spraying and immersion in 70% hospital sprit (ethanol) on the compressive strength and surface roughness at two different time intervals (24 and 48) hours.Materials and methods: Forty eight cylindrical stone specimens (12 for each group), were prepared for compressive strength and surface roughness testing. Six specimens of each group were tested after (24) hours and the other six after (48) hours. Results: The study showed no significant differences in values of compressive strength and surface roughness between the control and sprayed groups at (24 and 48) hours, this could be due to the fact that the sprayed specimens absorbs fewer amounts of disinfectants than the immersed groups. Conclusions: The immersion of the specimens in (70%) ethanol for (10) seconds and (30) minutes decrease the compressive strength and increase the surface roughness.

Abstract

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, also known as basal cell nevus syndrome, is an uncommon, autosomal dominant inherited disorder, which is characterized by numerous basal cell carcinoma, odontogenic keratocysts and musculoskeletal malformations. However, medical literature documents both common and lesser known manifestations involving the skin, central nervous system, craniofacial anomalies etc. A case of Gorlin –Goltz syndrome with no family history has been reported here, the patient have multiple odontogenic keratocysts, tiny pits involving the palms and soles, rib anomalies, numerous nevi and nodes predominantly present on his face, chest and back. Histopathological study confirms the presence of multiple keratocysts in the jaws and the absence of basal cell carcinoma of the skin. Immunohistochemical study showed negatively p53 staining result. Early diagnosis and treatment is important to prevent long term sequelae including malignancy and oromaxillofacial deformation and destruction.

Abstract

Background and objective: Myristica fragrans is an aromatic green tree usually growing to around 5-13 meters high, and their seeds (nutmegs) is firm broadly ovoid. The objectives of the study were to find the concentration of nutmeg oil that has maximum antibacterial action against Staphylococcus aureus and to evaluate the healing potential of this concentration on a chemically induced oral ulceration in the rabbit’s cheek mucosa. Methods: Different concentrations of nutmeg oil were prepared and their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was determined by disk diffusion method. The chemically induced oral ulcerations in rabbit’s cheek mucosa were achieved by ethanol, and then these ulcerations were irrigated with 0.5ml (5%) of nutmeg oil twice daily. Biopsies were taken after four and eight days of the experiment, processed and stained by hematoxylin and eosin. Results: The concentration 100% of nutmeg oil and the dimethyl sulfoxide; which was used as diluents for preparing different concentrations of nutmeg oil, showed no inhibition zone for Staphylococcus aureus. The concentration (5%) showed maximum inhibitory zone (16.8mm) for the micro-organism which was parallel to the effects of amoxicillin (positive control), both with highly significant action (P<0.05). The histopathological pictures showed a delay in the healing process of oral ulcers in rabbits treated by this concentration. Conclusion: The concentration of nutmeg oil (5%) has a good antibacterial action against Staphylococcus aureus, but it causes a delay in the healing process of oral ulcerations.

Abstract

A salivary gland tumor is an uncontrolled growth of cells that originates in one of the many saliva-producing glands in the mouth. The salivary glands are afflicted by a greater variety of neoplasms than any other organ system in the body. The objective of this study was to find the most common age group, sex affected, location, and types of salivary gland tumors in Erbil City.A retrospective analysis was done for all the cases of salivary gland tumors received, in the Department of Histopathology, Rizgari Teaching Hospital, for the years 2006, 2007 and 2008, and four histopathological laboratories in different area of Erbil City. All the cases were analyzed for age, sex, site, and type of the tumor, the slides of all cases under the study were re-examined for the histopathological presence or absence of any invasion. The number of the salivary gland tumors was (44) case. The age range of the patients was from (15-69) years, with a mean age of (42.05) years for the males, and (41.54) years for the females. The highest number of patients was seen above (54) years. The total male to female ratio was 0.76:1. Most of the salivary gland tumors were seen associated with the parotid gland and (31.82%) was seen within the age group (28-40) years. Histopathological study showed that the most common benign tumor was pleomorphic adenoma followed by Warthin’s tumor, and the most common malignant tumor was adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences present between the benign and the malignant tumor regarding the age, sex, and the invasion. The highest number of patients with salivary gland tumors was seen above (54) years.
