Sero prevalence of hepatitis B infection among dental professionals

Abstract

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global public health problem, especially to health care personnel including dentist.Materials and methods: Sixty – seven Iraqi dental professionals are participated in this study, filled out questionnaire record of past and present history of infection with HBV, immunization against HBV, blood transfusion, surgical operation. They reported time spent in profession and numbers of patients contract daily with them, and absence or presence of preventive measure.Results: Serological test for detection of (HBs Ag and anti HBs Ag, anti HBc IgM and anti HBc IgG) for each dentist had been alone. The result showed that 78.9% of dentists had get immunization against HBV that was determined by presence of anti HBs marker in their sera. A recovery state from previous infection reported in two dentists with positive anti HBs Ag and anti HBc IgG marker. The results showed no significant correlation between positive presence of HBV markers and the time spent in profession.Conclusion: Four dentists have positive sero HBV markers reported of non – using a protective measure

Abstract

Background: Dental implant surface technologies have been evolving rapidly to enhance a more rapid boneformation on their surface and improve implant therapy.Implant threads should be designed to increase surfacecontact areathat induced better stability. In addition, implant surface coating with Flaxseed was used to enhancebone formation at the bone-implant interface.Materials and methods: Ninety-six commercially pure titanium (CpTi) screws were implanted in rabbits' tibiae anddivided into three groups as dual-threaded group, flaxseed-coated group and control group. All groups wereevaluated mechanically, histologically and radiographically after each healing periods (2, 4, 6 and 8) weeks and theresulting data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and t-test at 0.05 significance level.Results: Dual threaded implant recorded the highest value in removal torque testand it showed mature bone at 8weeks period. Coated implant shows enhancement of osteoblast and it is the only modified implant that illustratesproliferating cartilage zone that later on degenerated and replaced by bone.Conclusion: Each modified implants shows different benefits whether a modification of the implant surfacemechanically (dual-threaded) or by coating the implants with Flaxseed

Abstract

Background: Seeds of Nigella sativa are frequently used in folk medicine in the Middle East and some Asian countriesfor the promotion of good health and treatment of many ailments. The multiple uses of Nigella sativa in folk medicineencouraged many investigators to isolate the possible active components and to conduct in vivo and in vitro studieson laboratory animals and human beings in order to understand its therapeutic actions. The aim of this study is toevaluate the effect of Nigella Sativa when used as a powder and during oil application on healing process ofextracted teeth sockets in different weeks.Materials and Methods: The sample of our study consists of Forty eight rabbits to extract their upper two centralincisors under general anesthesia. The left side filled once with Nigella sativa powder and once with Nigella sativa oilmaterial, and the right side left for normal healing as a control group. The two sockets were sutured. The results werestudied in intervals period 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks, histologically and radiographically.Results: Histomorphometric analysis for variables: trabecular width, trabecular number, trabecular separation,Marrow space star volume analysis, Osteoblast number, osteocyte number and blood vessels number for two socketsshowed significant differences in NgS powder group in comparison to NgS oil group and both NgS groups incomparison to control. Bone marrow star volume showed a significant variation between NgS powder and NgS oiland in both NgS groups in comparison to control, also bone marrow star volume showed decrease in it’s value withincrement in healing period in all groups, Cortical bone thickness records showed increment in NgS powder group incomparison to oil and in both groups in comparison to control with increment in periods of healing, Counting ofosteoblast and osteocyte showed high number in both NgS (powder and oil) groups in comparison to control group.The increment in number detected in 2nd week and then decrease as increase in periods (4th and 6th weeks) andnumerous blood vessels detected in 4th week’s duration in NgS powder groups in apical portion while it detected in6th weeks in apical portion for oil group.Conclusion: Nigella sativa (powder or oil) seems to be bioactive materials that enhance differentiation andproliferation of progenitor cells to specialized bone formative cells, with acceleration of bone formation

Abstract

Background Mobile telephones, sometimes called cellular phones (GSM, Global System for Mobile Communication)or handies, are now an integral part of modern telecommunications. In some parts of the world, they are the mostreliable or only phones available. In others, mobile phones are very popular because they allow people to maintaincontinuous communication without hampering freedom of movement.This study was carried out to evaluate theeffects of 900 MHz mobile phone on palate and tooth germ development in mouse embryo for the period of (16thday, 18th day intrauterine life and one day postnatal life).Materials and Methods Thirty pregnant Bulb-c Albeno Swiss female mouse (2-3 months of age, 100-125 gm of weight),were used in the present experiment. Those mice were divided into three groups. The first group consisted of 6pregnant mice were assigned as a control group. The second group consisted of 12 pregnant mice were exposed tomobile phone radiation for 60 minutes daily and the third group consisted of 12 pregnant mice were exposed tomobile phone radiation for 120 minutes daily starting from the zero day of gestation till the day of scarification. Theembryos of mice; were obtained at different period of gestation (At 16th day I.U.L., 18th day I.U.L.,and One day oldpostnatal period).Results Histological examination and immunohistochemical evaluation for CD34 expression were done for all animalsincluding control group showed that mobile phone (EMF radiation) with 900 MHz in short exposed period (one hour)can stimulate tooth germ cells as it was shown,an early appearance of tooth germ in cap stage at 16th day I.U.L andpositive expression of CD34 marker on dental tissue.Conclusion In this study we investigated an important point that the effects of mobile phones concerned onmesenchymal germ cell rather than ectodermal germ cell which represented by positive reaction of CD34 onmesenchymal cell of dental sac ,bone and cartilage. Increment in time exposure to EMF radiation emitted frommobile phone for 2 hours duration showed retardation in tooth development with obvious reduction in size of themice.

Abstract

Back ground: Today’s world is increasingly seeking ways to replace the synthetic drugs with the therapeutic power ofnatural products to decrease the percentage of many side effect which result from conventional treatment; one ofthese products was Nigella sativa (NgS) which was used so extensively that it became known as the seed of blessing“Habbatul Barakah” due to its powerful healing qualities for many ailments. The aim of this study was to evaluate thetherapeutic effect of Nigella sativa (powder and oil) on the healing process of extracted teeth sockets.Materials and Methods: The sample of our study consist of Forty eight rabbits to extract there upper two centralincisors under general anesthesia. The left side filled once with Nigella sativa powder and once with Nigella sativa oilmaterial, and the right side left for normal healing as a control group. The two sockets were sutured. The results werestudied radiographically and histologically after 1,2,4,6 weeks postoperatively. The radiographic examination wasperformed by using parallel technique in a digital radiographic examination and histological examination wasperformed under light microscope for the section stained with heamatoxiline and eosin.Results: Radiographically we found that NgS powder showed more radiopacity with complete disappearance oflamina dura in 6 weeks duration compared with NgS oil and control groups, while histologically we found that theNigella sativa (NgS) groups (powder and oil) illustrate an early apposition of osteoid tissue in 1st week duration withnumerous osteoblast and osteocyte in comparision to control group.In six weeks duration well developed bone filledall the portions of the socket in treated socket with NS powder with obvious complete epithelization of socket surfaceConclusion: Nigella sativa (powder or oil) seems to be bioactive materials that enhance differentiation andproliferation of progenitor cells to specialized bone formative cells, with no signs of inflammation

Abstract

Background : In order for a tooth to erupt, two obvious requirements are needed. First, there has to be alveolar boneresorption of the bone overlying the crown of the tooth such that an eruption pathway is formed. Second, resorptionof bony crypt and apposition of new one, third, there has to be a biological process that will result in the toothmoving through this eruption pathway.The amniotic sac contains a considerable quantity of stem cells. Theseamniotic stem cells are multipotent and able to differentiate into various tissues, which may be useful for humanapplication. Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) is concentrated on bone biology, morespecifically bone metabolism. RANKL plays a vital role in osteoclastogenesis for bone resorption. This study aimed toevaluate the expression of RANKL marker by dental cells during eruption of the teeth.Materials and Methods: : forty eight albino Swiss mice of one day old age injected with isolated amniotic stem cellsin the anterior region of maxilla (incisors area) other 16 mice injected with saline represents control. Sacrifice 4 micefor each period (4, 7, 10, and 13) day old age. The result were studied histologically and immunohistochemistry.Results: The present results localized and identified RANKL marker in 3 areas of developing tooth of the studied groupsincludes overlying, surrounding and apical bone. Positive RANKL with high significant value expressed by osteoclastof overlying bone in Amnion group followed by Control at day 4. In surrounding bone positive expression of RANKLillustrated to be highest in Control followed by Amniotic fluid at day 10.Apical bone shows positive expression ofRANKL in amniotic fluid group and it records to be the highest value in comparison to studied groups at day 10.Conclusion Expression marker RANKL illustrates that amniotic fluid group has a high expression of RANKL in osteoclastsurrounding and apical bone areas while control expressed RANKL in osteoclast of overlying bone. The present resultsopened clinical hopes in dental tissue engineering by application of autologous amniotic fluid and chorion cells

Abstract

Background: Exposure to microwaves radiation from microwave oven may be harmful for users especially for the onewho have highest contact with microwave oven. Because the body is electrochemical in nature, any force thatdisrupts or changes human electrochemical events will affect the physiology of the body by destabilization andinterruption of many chemical body substance including growth factors.The insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) are afamily of mitogenic proteins that control growth, differentiation, and the maintenance of differentiated function innumerous tissues. It fulfils an important role in growth and development of teeth, mandible, maxillae, and tongue.Platelet derived growth factors (PDGF) are proteins that regulate cell growth and division. In particular, it plays asignificant role in blood vessel formation (angiogenesis). It seems that IGF and PDGF share in much tissuedevelopmental process. Therefore they included in the present study in correlation to tooth growth & development.This study Illustrates the expression of insulin like growth factor and platelet derived growth factor by dental cells ofrat embryos at periods of gestation 16th,18thday intrauterine life(I.U.L) and one day neonatal life.Materials and Methods: Animal model: Thirty-six female rats were used in this study .Starting from zero days (time ofgestation that recorded) the pregnant rats were divided into three groups. Group A serve as a control, groups Bexposed to microwave oven radiation For (15 /minutes; 5/min /hour for 3 hours continuously) daily and C exposed toEMF radiation for (45 minutes ;15 min /hour for3hours continuously)daily starting from zero day of gestation till the lastday. The embryo of rats at 16thday and 18th day of intrauterine life and one day old rat (new born rat) were studiedimmunohistochemically for localized of platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) and insulin growth factor (IGF) markers.Results:The results showed that experimental group (B) exposed to short duration of radiation (5/ min.) stimulates thedevelopment of tooth germ and faster tooth growing in comparison to control with immunohistochemical resultsshow strong to moderate intense stain for positive expression of growth factors(PDGF,IGF) by dental tissue.For longexposure period of radiation( group C) , it showed retardation in the tooth growth withimmunohistochemical findingsrecord weak to negative intense stain for the expression of growth factors(PDGF,IGF) by dental tissue.Conclusion: Exposure to microwave (oven) radiation during pregnancy may play a role in the expression of IGF andPDGF by cells of tooth germ thatinfluence on cell differentiation and physiological activity of specialized dental cells,depending on exposure time

Abstract

Background: The study was designed to evaluate the effect of local application of exogenous VEGF/collagen Iseparately and as a combination in socket healing. Sixty male Albino Wistar rats were subjected for a surgical toothextraction of upper 1st molar of both sides (right side was considered as experimental site, while left be the controlone, treated with 1μL of normal saline). The rats were scarified at 3, 7, 14, 28 days post extraction. Socket healing washistologically examined with immunohistochemistochemical localization of ALP&FGF2.Materials and Method: Sixty male Albino Wistar rats were subjected for a surgical tooth extraction of upper 1stmolarof both sides (right side was considered as experimental site, while left be the control one). The animals were dividedinto following groups according to the applicable of biomaterials.A. Control group the tooth socket treated with 1μL of normal salineB. Experimental group includes• Group I contains (20) rats, the tooth socket treated with 1μL of VEGF• Group II contains (20) rats the tooth socket treated with 1μL of collagen type I• Group III contains (20) rats, the tooth socket treated with 1μL of a combination of VEGF and collagen I.Results: At 28 days all groups show re-epithelization but in different thickness, and with newly bone apposition andwith different maturity. For positive cells expressed ALP, VEGF group records a high mean values at 3, 14, 28 daysperiods and with high differences in comparison to other groups while control group reports a high mean value at 7days. For positive cells expressed FGF2. Control group illustrates a high record for the mean of positive cellsexpressed FGF2 at 3,7days periods and with high differences in comparison to other groups, while combinationgroup reports a high mean value at 14 days .Conclusion: Results, high lighted on the effect of local application of VEGF in extracted tooth socket that facilitateepithelization, while combination of (collagen and VEGF) shows a high mineralization zone

Abstract

Background: Partially stabilized Zirconia(PSZ)coated implant demonstrated the distinct effects on the surfacecomposition of the implant, and activates on osteoblasts. Zirconia improves cell proliferation significantly during thefirst days of implantation, and may improve attachment and adhesion strength of the implant. The aim of the studywas to evaluate the influence of the coated biomaterial (zirconium) on osseointegration of cpTi implantradiographically with mechanical test.Materials and Methods: Seventy-two commercially pure titanium implants(cpTi)were used in this study,(24)implantswere coated with PSZ by electrophoretic deposition(EPD)method,&(24) by dipping method, the rest24 implants wereused as controls, they were inserted in the tibia of (32)New Zealand white rabbits & were followed for 2,&6weeks.Mechanical torque removal test for evaluation of osseointegration was performed,Results: Results revealed that bone –implant contact (BIC), increased with time &that implants coated with PSZ bydipping method have shown higher torque mean values than those coated by EPD method.Conclusion: Dip-coating of the cpTi implants with PSZ, can be considered as an alternative coating method andenhance better bone implant contact than EPD.

Abstract

Background: Biocompatibility of orthopaedic surgical implants with bone tissue allows adequate osseointegrationbetween the bone and implant. To achieve this, implants are coated with biocompatible materials Commerciallypure titanium is widely used as dental implant material because of its suitable mechanical properties and excellentbiocompatibility,and to enhance osseointegration of the implant,organic and inorganic materials are used as abioinert coating material.Aim of the study: Comparison of the influence of the implant coated by biological material(collagen),and implantcoated by both bioinert ceramic(zirconia) and( collagen), on osseointegration by immunohistochemical , andradiographical studies with mechanical test.Materials and Methods: Commercially pure Titanium(cpTi) implants, coated with PSZ powder by electrophoreticdeposition (EPD) method, collagen protein, and mixture of collagen and partially stabilized zirconia(PSZ) wereplaced in the tibias of( 12 )New Zealand white rabbits, immunohistochemical tests for detection of expression ofosteocalcin and growth hormone receptor were performed on all the implants of both control and experimentalgroups for(3days,1, 2and6weeks) healing intervals.Mechanical test (torque removal test) was performed as anindicator for the presence of osseointegration and as a test for the mechanical property of bone-implant interface.Results: have illustrated that removal torque mean values, in all studied groups (uncoated and coated with both PSZand collagen at (2&6weeks) healing intervals were increasing with advancing time (higher at 6 than otherperiods),also results have shown that positive reaction for osteocalcin(OC)& growth hormone receptoe(GHR) wasexpressed by osteoblast cells(OB)at implants coated with collagen and implants coated with zirconia andcollagen,indicating that bone formation &maturation was accelerated by adding biological materials as amodification modality of implant surface..Conclusion: It is concluded that coating of implant with collagen and coating with both PSZand collagen showed anincrement in osseointegration in short interval period.
