Abstract

Background: Nigella sativa seeds have been frequently used in folk medicine
for treatment of various diseases such as inflammatory disease. The aim of this
study is to show the effect of this herb on Neutrophils count as the main anti-
inflammatory cells. Materials & Methods: Aqueous & oil extract ofNigella
sativa seeds have been applied for treatment of 30 blood samples of apparently
healthy individuals. Blood count has been performed after different incubation
periods.
Results & Conclusions: This study revealed that treatment of blood samples
with herbal extraction results in highly significant elevation of Neutrophils'
count with time passing particularly the aqueous one and after 6 hrs.
incubation period (P < 0.001). Our conclusion, that Nigella sativa aqueous
extract can be used against bacterial infections which required recruitment of Neutrophils.

Abstract

Summary: Background: Hepatitis C Virus is the main causative agent of hepatitis among blood transfused patients, in which most chronic cases result in liver carcinoma. Materials & Methods: Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for HCV, FNF-¬ and IL-12p40 estimation with Recombinant Immunoblotting Assay (RIBA) as a confirmatory test for HCV, have been applied for HCV detection in 80 HCV patients' samples in comparison with 30 samples for apparently healthy control, while viral load has been estimated using Branched-DNA (b-DNA) technique for 32 randomly selected positive cases for HCV. Liver function test has been applied for patients' sera in comparison with control. Results & Conclusions: This study reveals highly specificity & sensitivity of ELISA technique for HCV detection which results in 100% positivity by RIBA methods. Moreover, Viral load estimation shows that (71.9%) of HCV sera samples with viral load >615 IU /ml and only (28.1%) with viral load <615 IU/ml with highly significant difference between them (P = 0.013). Furthermore, there is a highly significant variations between liver function test in comparison with control group (P< 0.01), while SGPT is the only parameter which significantly affected by viral load (P= 0.01 1). Beside that, neither INF-¬ nor IL-12p40 level has been affected by viral loads more or less 6151U /ml. It was concluded that ELISA technique is still the best accurate reliable method for viral detection and SGPT is a good marker for highly viral loaded samples.

Abstract

Leukemia is a malignant disease (cancer) of the bone marrow and blood. It is characterized by the uncontrolled accumulation of blood cells. Leukemia is divided into four categories: Myelogenous or Lymphocytic, each of which can be acute or chronic.Forty Iraqi Acute Leukemic patients’ samples included 22 Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) and 18 Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) have been estimated for IL-1α using ELISA technique in comparison with 25 apparently healthy controls. This study reveals that there is a highly significant elevation in the level of this cytokine among ALL patients’ samples in comparison with control group (P< 0.001) for both AML and ALL group. Moreover there is no significant difference in IL-1α level before and after treatment (P> 0.05). In conclusion there is an effect for acute leukemia on IL-1α level particularly among AML cases in which it began to decline after treatment though it is non-significantly.

Abstract

Summary:Background: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. Many etiological agents are proposed to play a role in its pathogenecity. One of these factors is cytokines such as Interleukin¬6. Material & Methods: ELISA method has been used for IL-6 estimation in 75 RA patients in comparison with 61 SLE as patient controls and 39 apparently healthy controls. Results: This study showed that there was an elevation of IL-6 in the sera of RA patients with high significant differences between RA patients and controls (P< 0.001). Moreover a good correlation between IL-6 level & RF titer were observed. However, for most patients with high IL-6 were shown to be HLA-DR4. Conclusions: Interleukin-6 play a crucial role in the disease which may be participate in the severity of RA & subsequently its treatment.Key words: RA, IL-6, RF, HLA-DR4, ELISA, Microlymphocytotoxicity

Abstract

Background: Asthma is an allergic hypersensitivity disease in which many mediators play a role in its pathogenecity. One of these etiological agents is the mediators such as Interleukin-5 (IL-5). The aim of this study to demonstrate the association between IL-5 and obesity in asthma development. Materials & Methods: One hundred and four sera samples for asthma cases have been studied in comparison with 41 non-asthmatic bronchitis as a patient controls beside 30 apparently healthy controls. Cytokine has been estimated using ELISA method in correlation with Body Mass Index (BMI). Results: This study revealed a significant correlation between IL-5 concentration and BMI (P<0.05), particularly among females. Conclusion: There is certain correlation between obesity and asthma accompanied by IL-5. Key

Abstract

Background: Asthma is an allergic disease characterized by airway obstruction as a result of cellular accumulation due to the liberation of certain mediators. Among those mediators are the cytokines such as IL-5.
Patients & Methods: Interleukin-5 concentration has been estimated in 94 sera samples of Asthmatic patients in comparison with 41 non-asthmatic bronchitis as patient controls in addition to 30 apparent healthy control group using ELISA method.
Results & Conclusions: There is highly significant elevation of IL-5 in the asthmatic cases in comparison with healthy controls (P< 0.001). We conclude that this cytokine may play the major role in asthmatic attack & it may be a good marker for the disease.

Abstract

Background: Autoantibodies against liver membrane are the specific
autoantibodies found in AIH. Cytochrome P450 1A2 has been identified as the
target autoantigen for these autoantibodies
The aim of the study : is to evaluate the prevalence and clinical relevance of
LMA in AIH
Methods: The study was performed on 73 Iraqi patients with chronic active hepatitis
(CAH) of unknown cause , attending the teaching hospital for gastroenterology and
liver disease in a period between November 2003 and July 2004. Anti-liver membrane
antibodies were studied by IFA technique.
Results: LMA was detected in the sera of 28(57.14)and 3(37.5%) patients with type 1
and type 3 AIH respectively, but never in the sera of healthy group .
Conclusion: It was concluded that LMA is present in type-1 and type-3 AIH but not in
sera of patients with type-2 or in healthy control group.

Abstract

The miracle of the Green tea is for promote the health particularly the heart-vascular diseases has been suggested by Chinese for many years. This study revealed that there is a significant differences between the levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides before and after taking of 3 cups daily of green tea for 90 days by 52 hyper-lipidemic patients (23 female, 29male) (P< 0.01). Furthermore, this study showed a significant difference between the diastolic and systolic levels before and after 5 cups of green tea taking for 90 days by (49) hypertensive patients (23 female, 26 male) (P< 0.01). The conclusions that continuous consuming green tea enhances the health promotion by decrement of lipid profile and help good blood pressure. One cup=150 ML
