Effect of Glass Powder on Some Mechanical Properties of Polymer Matrix Composite Material

Abstract

This research deals with the study of the effect of adding glass powder of grain size (35μm) with different volume fraction (10%, 20%) to the blend of unsaturated polyester and polyurethane using hand lay-up method, after preparing the matrix from weight fraction (90%) of Unsaturated polyester and (10%) of polyurethane. The results have shown that the addition of particles to the polymer blends lead a great extent in mechanical properties, since testing bending, Shore D hardness and impact strength. It has shown that the values of young modulus, impact strength and hardness were increased with increasing of volume fraction of glass powder. Fracture surface of the samples were examined by using optical microscope with magnification (40 X) and the results showed that the nature of fracture is seems brittle fracture for all samples.

تم في هذا البحث دراسة تأثير إضافة مسحوق الزجاج وبحجـم حبيبـي ( 35) وبكسـور حجميـة مختلفـة(20% 10%,) إلى خليط من راتنج البولي استر غير المشبع والبولي يوريثان والتي أنجزت بواسطة طريقة القولبة اليدوية بعد أن تم تحضير المادة الأساس و بنسبة وزنية (%90( من البولي أستر الغير المشبع و%) 10( من البولي يوريثان. أظهرت لنتائج إن إضافة الدقائق إلى الخليط البوليمري حسن وبشكل كبير الخواص الميكانيكية، حيث تم إجراء اختبار الانحناء وصلادة شور D و مقاومة الصدمة، وقد اظهرت النتائج ان قيم معامل المرونة ومقاومة الصدمة والصلادة لخليط من راتنج البولي استر الغير مشبع والبولي يوريثان يزداد مع زيادة الكسر الحجمي لمسحوق الزجاج. ان سطوح الكسر لجميع العينات تم فحصها بواسطه المجهر البصري وبتكبير (40 X) و لقد أظهرت النتائج ان طبيعة الكسر هو كسر هش لجميع العينات.

Abstract

This study investigated the fabrication of composite from epoxy resin (EP) and waste short chicken feather fiber (CFF) at 5% volume fraction of fibers using hand lay-up method at room temperature. Some mechanical properties of the composite were determined including bending, shore D hardness and compressive strength. The process involved the treatment of the CFF with alkali solution, such as NaOH with 0.5 normality and then the effect of treatment on epoxy composite properties was studied. The results revealed that the addition of CFF to the epoxy resin has only a slight effect on the mechanical properties. It has shown that the values of Young modulus, compressive strength and hardness of EP/CFF composite were increased by the treatment of CFF with NaOH solution compared to pure epoxy and EP/CFF composite without treatment.

Abstract

In this research, some mechanical properties such as (flexural strength, young modulus and wear rate) have been studied to the composite Epoxy resin (EP) reinforced with % 5 volume fraction of chopped kenaf fibers (KF) ) by using hand lay-up technique . The natural fibers treated with 0.5normality of NaOH solution. The experimental results were compared with treated fibers composite, un treated fiber composite and pure epoxy. It was found that the treated kenaf fibers have increasing in young modulus, flexural strength values of the (EP/ KF) composite, comparing with neat resin (EP), while wear rates were increased with applied load of all samples.

Abstract

This research focuses on using animal waste bio- fibers which obtained from chicken as reinforcement in a thermoset resin as (epoxy) at 5% volume fraction using hand lay-up method at room temperature. Short chicken feather fibers (CFF) were treated chemically in 0.5 Normality by sodium hydroxide. Some of properties were studied such as: modulus of rigidity, wear rate and thermal conductivity for composites. The result showed that reinforcement and chemical treatment improve modulus of rigidity and thermal conductivity compared with untreated fiber composites and pure epoxy and wear rate decreased with increasing sliding time for all samples. This study shows that the animal waste fibers can be useful reinforcement in many application industries.

Abstract

This research was focused on study the effect of reinforcement by natural kenaf Fibers and when treated with alkali solution of sodium hydroxide with (0.5) Normality and with fiber volume fraction of 5% on the unsaturated polyester resin (UPE). Composite has been prepared by hand lay-up molding at room temperature. The results showed the strengthening of the matrix material with fibers and after treatment with alkali solution led to an increase with 67.4% of impact strength value and 9.43 % of hardness value and 34.6% of compressive strength value of composite compared with 36.4% of impact strength value and 2.37 % of hardness value and 11.47 % of compressive strength value of untreated kenaf fiber composite and pure unsaturated polyester resin due to the alkali treatment which acts on cleaning the surface from impurities and then its reflect on the value of mechanical properties of composite material.

تركز هذا البحث على دراسة تاثير التدعيم بالياف الكناف (Kenaf Fibers) الطبيعية والمعاملة بمحلول قاعدي من هيدروكسيد الصوديوم وبعيارية (Normality 0.5) وبكسر حجمي مقداره 5 % على راتنج البولي استر غير المشبع (UPE) وقد تم تحضير المتراكب بطريقة القولبة اليدوية بدرجة حرارة الغرفة . وقد اظهرت النتائج ان تدعيم المادة الاساس بالالياف وبعد المعاملة بالقاعدة ادى الى زيادة بمقدار 67.4 % لقيمة مقاومة الصدمة و 9.43 % لقيمة الصلادة و 34.6 % لقيمة مقاومة الانضغاط للمتراكب مقارنة مع 36.4 % لقيمة مقاومة الصدمة و 2.37 % لقيمة الصلادة و 11.47 % لقيمة مقاومة الانضغاط للمتراكب المدعم بالياف الكناف غير المعاملة و راتنج البولي استر غير المشبع النقي لان المعاملة بالقاعدة تعمل على تنظيف السطح من الشوائب ومن ثم ينعكس تأثيرها على قيم الخواص الميكانيكية للماده المتراكبة.

Abstract

Banana fiber at present is a waste product of banana cultivation. Moreover, without anyadditional cost input.This study was carried out to investigate the effect of pseudo-stem banana fibers in the wovenfabric configuration on the mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester composite. It was foundthat the addition of pseudo- stem banana woven fabric increased in the impact, compression, andflexural strength. The results showed that the impact strength on the pseudo- stem banana wovenfabric reinforced (UP) composite is increased by 22% compared to virgin (UP), while flexural andcompression strength on the composite is increased by 15% and 12% respectively.

ألياف الموز المستعملة هي نفايات زراعية لنخيل الموزوبدون اي اضافات. تم اجراء هذه الدراسة لبحث تأثيرحصيرة الياف الموز على الخصائص الميكانيكية للبولياستر غير المشبع حيث وجد ان اضافة حصيرة الموزللبولي استر يؤدي الى زيادة متانة الصدمة والانضغاطيةومتانة الانحناء. واوضحت النتائج بان زيادة متانة الصدمةللمادة المتراكبة كانت بحدود 20 % بينما كانت الزيادة فيمتانة الانحناء والانضغاطية بحدود 15 % و 12 % علىالتوالي للمادة المتراكبة مقارنة مع البولي استر النقي.
