Pattern and Determinants of Inter pregnancy interval among women in Baghdad

Background: Adequate child spacing considered as a positive factor for health of mothers and their children. A variety of demographic and socio economic characteristics influence women’s spacing practices.Objectives of the study: This study is an attempt to determine the pattern of inter pregnancy interval as well as to evaluate the effect of some selected determinants of the inter pregnancy interval among a sample of women in Baghdad.Subjects and method: Across-sectional study was conducted in Baghdad, in four teaching hospitals, during the period from of January through April 2012.The study group were 500 women admitted to the selected hospitals for delivery according to certain inclusion and exclusion criteria. A questionnaire form used for data collection through direct interview. Data included inter pregnancy interval, demographic and fertility variables.Results: The mean inter pregnancy interval was 27.3 months, and 45.2%of respondents practice inter pregnancy interval of 2-4 years. Analysis of data revealed that, women age at current pregnancy, age at delivery of index child, method of delivery(by caesarean section) and birth order were the significant predictors determining inter pregnancy interval, while education and occupation of couple ,place of residency showed no significant impact upon interpregnancy interval duration. As well as the survival status of index child, type of pregnancy and sex of index child did not affect inter pregnancy interval duration
