Caries experience in relation to the tea consumption and salivary parameters among the smokers and non-smokers patients

Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the caries experience, saliva pH, salivary flow rate and tea consumption in smokers and non-smokers patients.The samples were composed of 60 subjects divided into two main groups 30 male for non- smokers and other 30 male for smokers. They asked about smoking behaviors, the dietary habits including frequency of tea consumption per day and the quantity of the sugar intake, and oral health behaviors for both groups. The dental caries was assessed using DMFT index and the saliva pH and the salivary flow rate were measured. Student t -Test and correlation coefficient were used for statistical comparisons. The results indicated that the DMFT and the salivary flow rate were decreased with exception that there was no significant difference between saliva pH between the smokers and non-smokers groups. In addition to the frequency of tea consumption was higher in smokers than in non-smokers and with increased frequency of tea consumption the DMFT decreased. The conclusion of this study indicated the long term use of the tobacco smoking affects the dental caries and the salivary flow rate but does not affect on the saliva pH. It is possible to increase the frequency of tea consumption but with less amount or free from sugar.

أجريت هذه الدراسة لتقييم نخرَ الأسنان، قاعدية اللعاب ، نسبة تدفقِ اللعابيةِ واستهلاك الشاي لدى المرضى المدخنين وغير مدخنينِ.العينات كَانتْ متكوّنة من ستين شخص من الذكور قسّمتْ بالتساوي إلى مجموعتين رئيسيتينِ اثنتين مجموعة متكونة من ثلاثين من الذكور لغير المدخنين والأخرى من ثلاثين من الذكور للمدخنين. سَئلوا عن سلوك التدخين ِ، العادات الغذائية التي تضمنت كمية استهلاك الشاي بِاليوم وكميةِ استهلاك السكرَ لكلتا المجموعتين. قُيّمَ نخر الأسنان باستعمال دليلِ DMFT و قِيستْ قاعدية اللعاب ونسبة التدفقِ اللعابيةِ. أشارتْ النتائج ان دليل DMFT كَانَ أعلى في المدخنين من الغير مدخنينِ ونسبة التدفقِ اللعابيةِ نقصت مع عدم وجود فرق معنوي في قاعدية اللعابِ بين المدخنينِ و الغير مدخنينَ. بالأضافة إلى انَ زيادة استهلاك الشاي كان أعلى في المدخنين مِنْ الغير مدخنينِ مع زيادة استهلاك الشاي هنالك نقصان في دليل DMFT. .تبين من النتائج ان المدى البعيدَ من تدخين التبغ له تأثير على نخرِ الأسنان ونسبةِ التدفقِ اللعابيةِ لكن لا تُحدثَ تغيير في قاعدية اللعابِ . كذلك من الممكن زيادَة استهلاك الشاي لكن مَع كمية أقل من السكر.

Abstract

The deciduous tooth emergence considered as very important to assess growth and development of the children and also very important indicator for the age estimation in children. In this study age of the first tooth erupt was estimated and the effect of the feeding types which are either breast or bottle feeding and sex on the number of the deciduous teeth present in the children has been studied. 252 children from the age 6 months - 34 months who's selected randomly and number of teeth eruption was studied in correlation with age, position in the dental arch, sex, type of nursing habits. The results showed the mean numbers of the teeth was higher in group of the breast feeding than those with bottle feeding and in the females higher than males. The mean time of the lower central incisor was earlier than upper central incisor with no difference in the halves. In conclusion of this study the breast feeding has the better effect on the teeth eruption and development. There is acceleration in dentition in the female than males. Lower central incisor is the first tooth erupts in both sides in the dental arch.

يعتبر ظهور الأسنان اللبنية مهم جداً لتَقييم تطور النموِ لدى الأطفالِ وكذلك يعتبر مؤشرِ مهمِ جداً لتقدير العُمر لدى الأطفالِ. في هذه الدراسة تم تقديرِ عُمر ظهور السن الأولِ وكذلك تأثيرِ نوعِ الرضاعة سواء كانت رضاعة طبيعية او رضاعة صناعية ونوع الجنسَ على عددِ الأسنانِ اللبنية الموجودة عند الأطفالِ. 252 طفل مِنْ العُمرِ 6 شهورِالى34 شهر تم اختيارهم عشوائيا حيث تم دراسة عددِ الأسنانِ الظاهرة حسب عُمرِ، وضِع الأسنان في الفك ، جنس، ونوع الرضاعة. أظهرت النَتائج ان متوسط عدد الأسنانِ كَانتْ أعلى في مجموعةِ الرضاعة الطبيعية مِنْ مجموعة الرضاعة الصناعيةِ وفي الإناث أعلى مِنْ الذكورِ. وان متوسط العمر للقواطع المركزيةِ السفلية كَانَ يسبق القواطع المركزيةِ العلويةِ بغض النظر عن موقعها في الفك سواء يمين او يسار. تبين من نتائج هذه الدراسةِ ان إطعام الاطفال طبيعيا لَهُ التأثير الأفضل على نمو وتطورِ الاسنان اللبنية وهناك تعجيل في التسنين لدى الأناث مِنْ الذكورِ. ان السن الأول الذي يظهر في فك الأسنان هو القاطع المركزي السفلي.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes can affect the health of the teeth and the surrounding structures that are increased the risk of developing periodontal disease that resulting destruction of the bone and the periodontal tissues that lead to greater teeth loss than those without diabetes.
Objectives: The aim of this study to compare the teeth loss of the diabetic and non-diabetic patients considering the age, sex , duration of the disease and oral health behaviors.
Methods: Teeth loss of 67 adult diabetics and 67 non-diabetic patients of age 45-74 years old were examined also diabetic group was compared according to the duration of the disease. The oral health behavior including the frequency of the tooth brush per day, cleaning method, and tobacco use were compared among the diabetic and non-diabetic groups.
Results: There is highest significant difference in mean number of the teeth loss between the diabetics and non diabetics with non significant difference between the patients of more than 10 years and less than 10 years of the duration. The diabetics showed significantly higher frequency of the tooth brush and tobacco use than non-diabetic group and the teeth loss decreased with increased the frequency of the tooth brush.
Conclusions: The teeth loss was greater in diabetics than non-diabetics, when the duration of the disease was increased there was increased in teeth loss. The study indicated that diabetic subjects should improve their oral hygiene practices.

Abstract

This In-vitro study was conducted to evaluate the effect of calcium hypochlorite as a disinfectant solution in different concentration on the diametral tensile strength (DTS) of type III dental stone by using microwave and air-drying methods.Calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCL)2] solution was prepared in the concentration from 0.3 to 1.8% and cylinder specimens of type III dental stone were constructed according to manufacturer's recommendation. Half of specimens were dried in open air, the other dried in a microwave oven for 10 minutes. All these specimens were tested under diameral tensile strength using Instron testing machine with cross head speed 0.5 cm/min. ANOVA, least significant difference and student T-Test were used for statistical comparisons.The results indicated that the strength of stone was decreased with increased of concentration of disinfectant with exception that there was no significant difference between 0.3% and control group. In addition to the strength values for dental stone dried in microwave oven were higher than those dried in open air. The conclusion of this study it is possible to mix 0.3% Ca(OCL)2 solution with dental stone, as well as the use of microwave oven for drying stone had positive effect on the tensile strength

أجريت هذه الدراسة المختبرية من اجل تقييم تأثير مادة هايبوكلوريت الكالسيوم كمادة معقمة وبتراكيز مختلفة على قوة الشد القطرية لمادة الجبس نوع ٣ باستخدام طريقتين مختلفتين للتجفيف أما بالهواء أو بفرن المايكروويف.حضر محلول هايبوكلوريت الكالسيوم بتراكيز تتراوح من 0.3 – 1.8 %، صنعت العينات اسطوانية الشكل من مادة الجبس بحسب توصيات الشركة المصنعة. نصف هذه العينات تم تجفيفها في الهواء والنصف الأخر تم تجفيفها بفرن المايكروويف لمدة 10 دقائق، وبعد ذلك تم تحديد قوة الشد القطرية لجميع العينات باستخدام جهاز Instron وبسرعة 0.5 سم / دقيقة .أظهرت النتائج ان قوة مادة الجبس تقل بزيادة التركيز ماعدا لايوجد فرق معنوي بين استخدام تركيز 0.3% وعدم استخدام المادة المعقمة بالإضافة إلى قيم قوة الشد لمادة الجبس التي تم تجفيفها بفرن المايكروويف كانت أعلى من قيم المجاميع التي تم تجفيفها في الهواء. تبين من النتائج ان من الممكن مزج محلول هايبوكلوريت الكالسيوم بتركيز 0.3% مع مادة الجبس بالإضافة إلى استخدام المايكروويف كان له تأثير ايجابي على قوة الشد لمادة الجبس.

Abstract

This study was oriented to assess and compare the use of 2% Myrtus communis solution on the dimensional stability, surface roughness and surface hardness of the heat cured resin with 0.12% Chlorhexidine.Ninety samples were fabricated from acrylic resin that cured by water bath, for each test there were three groups according to the type of the immersion. Control group (distilled water); experimental group (0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate solution and 2% Myrtus Communis solution, each group consist from (10) specimens. The surface hardness, roughness and dimensional stability were evaluated for each specimen.The results showed there were no significant differences in the surface hardness, roughness after immersion in all groups, but there was difference in dimensional stability of acrylic resin. As a conclusion the use of 2% Myrtus commnuis solution had no change on the roughness and hardness of resin compared to the chlorhexidine and distilled water, but can cause alterations on the stability of the dimensions of the resin material.

هدفت هذه الدراسة الى تقييم تأثير 2% من مستخلص نبات الياس على صلابة وخشونة السطح وثبات الأبعاد لمادة طقم الأسنان الاكريليكي والمتبلمر حراريا بالمقارنة مع 0.12% كلورهيكسدين والماء المقطر كمجموعه قياسية. حضرت 90 عينة من مادة طقم الأسنان الاكريلكية المتبلمرة حراريا ,لكل اختبار قسمت العينات الى ثلاث مجاميع حسب نوع مادة الغمر. مجموعة قياسية (ماء مقطر) ومجموعه تجريبية 2% من مستخلص نبات الياس و0.12% كلورهكسدين. كل مجموعة تحتوي على عشر عينات . تم قياس صلابة وخشونة السطح وثبات الأبعاد لكل عينة. أظهرت النتائج لايوجد فرق معنوي في صلابة وخشونة السطح لمادة طقم الأسنان ولكن يوجد فرق في ثبات الأبعاد لمادة الاكريليك.استنتج من هذه الدراسة ان استخدام 2% من مستخلص نبات الياس ليس له تأثير على صلابة وخشونة السطح لمادة الاكريليك المتبلمرة حراريا بالمقارنة مع الكلورهكسدين والماء المقطر ولكن يسبب تغير بالأبعاد لمادة طقم الأسنان الاكريليكية

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases in the general population that effects theoral cavity so the probability of detecting an increased of dental caries in diabetic patients is more controversial. Theaims of this study to compare the dental caries among the diabetic and non diabetic patients and its relation withthe blood glucose level, medical history and oral health behaviors among type II non-insulin dependent diabeticmellitus patients.Materials and methods: The samples were composed of 180 subjects of diabetic patients and 180 subjects of nondiabetes. Both gender and age range 40 -70 years for both groups. The data were gathered by questionnaire,clinical examination and laboratory investigations included frequency of oral hygiene practices, caries experienceusing the DMFT Index, blood glucose including the fasting blood glucose level, and random blood glucose level.Independent t-test, Chi-square, correlation coefficient, as well as Z-proportion tests were used for statisticalcomparisons.Results: It indicated that there was no significant difference in DMFT between the diabetic and non-diabetic groups.In addition to blood glucose level was higher in diabetes than non diabetes with increased dental caries with theincrease of blood glucose level either random or fasting blood glucose level.Conclusion: This study indicated that the presence of dental caries is not significantly elevated in most diabetics butthe blood glucose level and the age effect on the dental caries as well as diabetic subjects should improve their oralhygiene practices

Abstract

Transverse test is considered to be appropriate for polymericdental materials since compression and tension stresses arecorrelated to specific fractures that occur during flexural load. Sothe aim of the study is to evaluate the transverse strength of heatcured acrylic denture base material by using different surfacetreatment by laser treatment with diodes laser and air-abrasionAL2O3. The 60 specimens of heat cured acrylic denture basematerial were prepared for this study. They were divided into threegroups according to type of the surface treatment and as follows:first group without any treatment (control group), second group istreated with air-abrasion (AL2O3). While third group is treatedwith Diodes laser, then each group subdivided into two groupsaccording to addition of the soft liner: group a: specimens madefrom heat cured acrylic and soft liner, while group b: specimensmade from heat cured acrylic only, each group consisted from 10specimens. The results showed lowest mean values of thetransverse strength for the control group than the specimens withAL2O3 group, and the highest mean values of diodes laser groupbut statically there was non-significant difference between thegroups. In addition the mean values transverse strength of the softliner bonded to the heat cured acrylic were higher mean than thosewithout soft liner groups. Within the limitation of this study,there was no change in the transverse strength of the heat curedacrylic by using the diodes laser and air-abrasion AL2O3 surfacetreatment.

Abstract

Background: Soft liner material is become important in dental prosthetic treatment. They are applied to the surface of the dentures to achieve more equal force distribution , reduce localized pressure and improve denture retention by engaging undercut . So the aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of different surface treatment by air-abrasion AL2O3 and laser treatment with CO2 laser on improving the shear bond strength of the denture liner to acrylic denture base material .Materials and methods: the 30 specimens of heat cured acrylic denture base material (high Impact acrylic )and heat cured soft liner (Vertex ,Nether Lands )were prepared for this study .They were designed and divided according to type of the surface treatment 10 specimens for each group and as follows :Group I without any treatment (control group ), Group II was treated with air-abrasion (AL2O3). While group III was treated with CO2 laser which has continuous pulses with wave length(10.6) micro-meter for (15) seconds .Results: The results revealed that lowest mean values in shear bond strength the specimens treated with AL2O3 (0.498 N/mm2)and control group (0.569 N/mm2)and the highest mean values for the specimens treated with CO2 laser (0.648 N/mm2) .Conclusion: within the limitation of this study ,CO2 laser surface treatment of the heat cure acrylic denture resin with soft liner material resulted in highly significantly increased in shear bond strength values than control and AL2O3

Abstract

In selecting chemical cleaning solutions for dental prostheses, compatibilitybetween them and the type of denture base materials must be considered to avoidadverse effects on the hardness of the acrylic resin in different curing systems. Thisstudy aimed to compare the effect of different disinfectant and denture cleanser on thesurface hardness of the light and heat cured acrylic resin materials. Eighty specimensare made from two different denture base materials. Forty specimens are made oflight cured acrylic and forty specimens are made of heat cured acrylic resin. Eachmaterial is subdivided into four subgroups according to the type of the disinfectant(0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate, 0.5% sodium hypochlorite), the denture cleansers(Corega) and compared to the distilled water as control group. The surface hardnesstest is measured for each specimen to show the effect of each chemical cleaningsolution on the light and heat cured denture base hardness. The results of the presentstudy showed non significant differences in the surface hardness comparing betweenthe two curing systems light and heat cured acrylic resin. Also there are nonsignificant differences in the surface hardness when different disinfectant and denturecleansers have been used in comparison to the distilled water. It was concluded fromthis study that the hardness of acrylic materials is not affected by immersion in anytype of disinfectant and denture cleanser as well as it is found that there is no differentin the hardness of the light cured when compared to the heat cured acrylic denturebase.

Abstract

Background: Denture cleansers are the most widely used by the patients to maintainclean denture as the presence of Candida albicans on the surfaces of denture-baseacrylic resins is strongly related to the development of oral stomatitis but thecleansers may have harmful effect on some properties of the denture. So the aimof this study is to evaluate and compare the effect of different denture cleansers onthe surface roughness and adherence of the Candida albicans on the light and heatcured acrylic resin materials.Materials and methods: Eighty specimens were made from two different denturebase materials for each test. Forty specimens were made of light cured acrylic andforty specimens were made of heat cured acrylic resin. Each material group wassubdivided into four subgroups according to the type of the denture cleansers andthe distilled water that was used as control group. Antimicrobial activity and thesurface roughness test were measured for each specimen to show the effect ofeach denture cleansers on surface of the denture base materials.Results: The results showed that there were highly significant differences in theantimicrobial activity before and after the use of denture cleansers while therewere no significant differences in surface roughness between before and afterimmersion in the denture cleansers for both acrylic specimens. While the surfaceroughness and the Candida albicans attachment to light cured acrylic wassignificantly higher than that of heat cured acrylic specimens.Conclusion: It was concluded that the Candida albicans attachment was effected bythe immersion in the denture cleansers while the roughness of acrylic materialswas not affected by immersion in denture cleansers as well as it was found that theCandida albicans attachment and the surface roughness of the light cured washigher than the heat cured acrylic denture base.
