Abstract

background: Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) represents a pathological, diagnostic, and risk continuum from unstable angina through myocardial infarction (MI) with or without ST-segment elevation. These three conditions share a very similar pathology, although treatment differs. Elevated markers of inflammation, in particular hs-CRP, are associated with an increased risk of future cardiovascular events in healthy subjects, Increased oxidative stress and the generation of the free oxygen radicals can result in modification of LDL to oxidized LDL that could lead to atherosclerotic lesions, Elevated levels of CK-MB have been regarded as biochemical markers of myocyte necrosis. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of CK-MB and oxidative stress (MDA) in acute coronary syndromes.Patients and Methods: One hundred one (101) cardiac patients were admitted to the coronary care unit, Ibn alnafees Hospital and Al kindy Hospital over the period July 2009 and March 2010 with the clinical diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome their ages range was (24-84) years, the number of male was (65) (64.36%) and female was (37) (36.63%).39 healthy control (age, sex, matched) were enrolled in this study. All cardiac patients have routine ECG, cardiac biomarkers measurements especially(CK-MB), serelogical markers (hs-C-RP),lipid profile test and oxidative stress markers(MDA).10 ml of blood needed for assessment of the above makers. Results: Oxidative Stress and Cardiac Biomarkers in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) 101 were found significantly high in patients with ACS as compared to healthy subjects but significantly decreased in HDL-cholesterol in ACS patients as compared to healthy controls. ACS is associated with greater than normal lipid peroxidation. Conclusion: Our study shows a significantly increase in lipid peroxidation and cardiac biomarkers in the circulation of patients with ACS. A significant decrease level of HDL-C were observes only in ACS patients. These finding suggest these biomarkers may be useful diagnosis of patients with ACS.

Abstract

BackgroundCytokines are responsible for the modulation of immunological and inflammatory processes and play a significant role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome patients (ACS).ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the serum levels of IL-1α and IL-6 in ACS patients.MethodsThe study covered 140 subjects. It comprised a total of 101 patients with ACS patients [62 with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and 39 with unstable angina (UA)], compared with 39 healthy individuals with no history of cardiac disease. Serum IL-1α and IL-6 analysis was performed by ELISA.ResultsThe present results revealed that there were significant elevation in mean serum levels of IL-1α and IL-6 in patients with ACS ( AMI and UA) as compared to healthy control (P<0.001). Moreover, the levels of these cytokines were significantly higher in AMI patients when compared to UA patients (P<0.001).ConclusionThese finding suggest that IL-1α and IL-6 play an important role in pathogenesis of ACS.KeywordsAcute coronary syndrome, IL-1α and IL-6.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Pathogenetic therapy of RA is a complex task, according to modern views on the development of* Dept. of Microbiology, Medical College, Al-Nahrain Univ. ** Dept. of Clinical Biochemistry, Medical College, Al-Nahrain Univ. *** Dept of Basic Science, College of Dentistry, Univ. of Baghdad. (1). autoimmune inflammation in RA, cytokineimbalance plays a great part in RA pathogenesis Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease affects many tissues and organs, butprincipally attacks flexible (synovial) joints. Methotrexate is the most commonly used disease-modifyingantirheumatic drug for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of methotrexate on serum levels of IL-1α and IL-8 inrheumatoid arthritis. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 50 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (25 patients without treatment and 25 patients are received methotraxate) and from 30 healthy age and sex matched individuals served ascontrols. Serum IL-1α and IL-8 were measured by means of enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay.RESULTS: The present results showed that serum levels of IL-1α and IL-8 were significantly higher in RA patientsthan in healthy controls (P<0.01), furthermore, level of IL-1α was significantly decrease in patientstreated with methotraxate as compared to those patients who have received no treatment (P<0. 01). On theother hand serum level of IL-8 did not showed any significant differences between patients treated withmethotraxate and those patients without treatment (P>0. 05).CONCLUSION: These finding demonstrate that methotrexate turns out to be a good inhibitor for IL-α production. Inaddition, IL-1α and IL-8 may have a significant role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis, and couldbe use a
