Abstract

ANTHROPOMETRIC FACE IN BASRAHNada H Al-jassim , Zuhair F Fathallah & Nawal M AbdullahMB,ChB, DGO.Anatomy.Abstract Anthropometry is the systematic quantitative representation of the human body, it is used to measure the absolute and relative variability in size and shape of the human body. Over thecenturies, there have been remarkable changes in anthropometric measurements due to geographical, cultural, genetic and environmental factors. The studying of human face and theassessment of facial dimensions attract the attention of the artists, poets and scientists and takes a prime importance in medical and dental fields in both diagnosis and treatment planning.Anthropometry also used for the design of clothing and equipment, e.g. Gas masks, oxygen masks, dust masks and respirators as well as design of military and industrial helmets. Therehad been no studies done on facial measurement in Basrah therefore, this study is to be considered as the first in this field and the baseline for further studies. This study had attemptedto quantitatively measure the human face in different ethnic groups of the local population and to identify the differences between individuals of different races and sexes, also to identify the differences between the people of Basrah and other people worldwide. These differences whichare responsible for the special facial features in different ethnic groups should be maintained during reconstructive or aesthetic surgery otherwise the patients will lose their ethnic features. The people of Basrah have different racial and ethnic background, there are Semites which are the Arabs and Syrian (Assyrian & Chaldean), Arian, who are the Armenian, Kurdish andPersian, and then there is the mixed group result from interracial marriages. This study is a cross sectional study with a comparative component conducted in Basrah governorate. The data was randomly collected from volunteers, for the period from February toJuly 2013. Raw data used in this study was originated from a total number of 1000 Iraqi adults (526 females and 474 males) living throughout Basrah governorate and were used to create adatabase for statistical analysis. The result of this study shows that there are differences between the races and between the local people and the surrounding countries and indeed there is a great difference from thestandard measurement advocated by western researchers. Abstract

Prof. Department of Pathology, College of Medicine, University of Al-Mustansiryah, IRAQ.Abstract The aim of this retrospective study on tissue specimens of benign colorectal polyps is to evaluate the significance of IHC markers CD44, CD 166 and ALDH1A1 expression in non-neoplastic (Juvenile and Hamartomatous) polyps and their association with different clinicopathological parameters & to compare their expression in benign polyps with that of normal colonic tissue . Seventy cases enrolled in the study including benign polyps (juvenile & hamartomous polyps) & benign looking colonic tissue obtained from archive of histopathology unit in Gastroenterology and Hepatology hospital in Baghdad Medical City and histopathology unit in Al-Sadder Teaching Hospital in Basrah city for the period Sept. 2015 to Dec. 2016. Four micrometer sections were obtained from formalin fixed paraffin-embedded blocks treated IHC with CD44, CD166 and ALDH1A1 tumor markers. Majority of polyps were juvenile, no difference regarding gender distribution. The common location was rectum/rectosigmoidal region. CD166, CD44 and ALDH1A1 showed high expression regarding age, gender and location in benign tumors when compared with healthy looking tissue. In conclusion, colorectal polyps are critical clinical entity and many of them are a precursors to malignant diseases so colonoscopy is essential screening test, polypectomy and follow up is mandatory for patients with colorectal polyps even if they are benign.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:Anthropometry is the systematic quantitative representation of the human body, it is used to measure the absolute and relative variability in size and shape of the human body. Scientists were studying this knowledge in medicine for both diagnosis and treatment.The people of Basrah are a mixture of Semites, Arian, and there are the mixed group result from interracial marriages.OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively measure the human face in different ethnic groups of local population and to identify the differences between individuals of different races and sexes, also to identify the differences between the people of Iraq and other people worldwide. MATERIAL AND METHODS:This study is a cross sectional study conducted in Basrah governorate. The data was randomly collected for the period from February to July 2013, from 1000 Iraqi adults (526 females and 474 males) living throughout Basrah governorate. They were between the ages of 18- 40 years, and had to meet certain criteria. This sample was used to create a database for statistical analysis.RESULTS:The results show that the measurements of the three sections and four sections facial profile are unequal as stated by neoclassical canons. The ears are longer than the nose. There are slight differences between the intercanthal distance (ICD) and alar width. The palpebral fissure length is equal to the ICD. The mouth width is 1.4 times the nose width. The facial width (zy- zy) is 3.4 times the nose (alae) width.CONCLUSION:There are differences in facial measurements, although slight, between different ethnic groups in Iraq, and between Iraqi population in general and the population of other countries, therefore, aesthetic measurements applied to all races are inapplicable. These slight differences could be attributed to interracial marriages and or environmental effect.

Angiographic anatomical variation of origin of left circumflex coronary artery in Basrah

Abstract

Background: The left circumflex coronary artery normally originated from left coronary artery , however, this artery may change its origin either from left aortic sinus or from right aortic sinus. This knowledgement may help in understanding some of ischemic heart diseases and its consequences on cardiac surgery. Objective: To know the incidence of anatomical variations of left circumflex coronary artery origin among people in Basrah.Patients and Method: Prospective study of the coronary angiography carried out in cardiac catheterization center at Al-Sader Teaching Hospital during period from 5th of October 2012 to end of June 2013. A sample of 315 patients was recruited with normal coronary angiography. Results: In the present study the left circumflex artery was variable in its origin, the left circumflex artery originated from the left coronary artery in 97.1%, originated from the left aortic sinus in 1.9% and in 1% of the sample it originated from right aortic sinus. Conclusions: Recognition of the origin of left circumflex coronary artery and its anatomical variations before cardiac surgery is important to prevent myocardial infarction and death. Special surgical consideration must perform in valvular replacement in patient with variation of origin of left circumflex coronary artery.

الخلفية: الشريان التاجي المنعطف الأيسر ينشا عادة من الشريان التاجي الأيسر، ومع ذلك، هذا الشريان قد يتغير منشأه أما من الجيب الابهري الأيسر أو من الجيب الابهري الأيمن وان هذه المعرفة قد تساعد على فهم بعض من أمراض القلب الاقفاري وعواقبه في جراحة القلب. الهدف: الهدف من هذه الدراسة معرفة حدوث اختلافات تشريحية من منشأ الشريان التاجي المنعطف الأيسر بين سكان البصرة.طريقة أجراء البحث والمرضى: أجريت دراسة استطلاعية لتصوير الشرايين التاجية في مركز قسطرة القلب في مستشفى الصدر التعليمي خلال الفترة من الخامس من تشرين الأول 2012 و حتى نهاية حزيران 2013 وقد أجريت على 315 مريض ذوي شرايين تاجية سليمة.النتائج: في هذه الدراسة كان الشريان المنعطف الأيسر متغير المنشأ، حيث ينشا الشريان المنعطف الأيسر من الشريان التاجي الأيسر في 97.1٪ و ينشا من الجيب الابهري الأيسر في19% و في 1% ينشا من الجيب الابهري الأيمن.الاستنتاجات: أن من الأجدر أدراك الاختلافات في منشأ الشريان التاجي المنعطف الأيسر وذلك للوقاية من احتشاء عضلة القلب والموت و خصوصا في عمليات القلب المفتوح. ويجب الأخذ بالاعتبار إجراء دراسة جراحية خاصة في استبدال صمامات القلب لهولاء المرضى
