Abstract

Some of the newly constructed highway pavements in Iraq have shown premature failures with consequential negative impacts on both roadway safety and economy. Major types of these failures are permanent deformation (rutting) and cracking. Fillers were suspected to be a major contributor to these failures. The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of new different fillers extracted from different local sources on the performance of asphalt mixtures. The effect of filler type and content on the failures potential of asphalt concrete as well as other mixes properties was investigated. A detailed laboratory study is carried out by preparing asphalt mixtures specimens using aggregate from Al-Taji quarry, (40-50) grade asphalt from dourah refinery and three different types of fillers (Portland cement, Silica fume, and Fly ash) were tested in the laboratory. Marshal Mix design was made using all types of fillers and different ratios to evaluate the performance of different types and filler quantities in the asphalt mixture. The mechanical properties of mixes were studied using indirect tensile strength, creep and marshal tests. Three different tests temperature (15,30,45C°) were employed in the indirect tensile test to investigate the susceptibility of these mixes to change in temperature. Results of this study indicate that replacement of Portland cement by 9.8% of silica fume aggravates resistance of the mixes to rutting and cracking. Furthermore, coal fly ash cannot be used as mineral filler in hot mix asphalt paving applications.

البعض مِنْ أرصفةِ الطرق المَبْنيةِ حديثاً في العراق تحدث بها حالاتَ فشل لها تأثيراتِ سلبيةِ على كل من الأمان واقتصاد الطرق. النوع الرئيسي لحالاتِ الفشل هذه الأخاديد والشقوق. المواد المالئة تُعتبر من العوامل المساهمة في حدوث مثل حالاتِ الفشل هذه. إنّ هدفَ هذه الدراسةِ هو تُقييّمَ تأثيرَ المواد المالئة المختلفِة الجديدِة المستخرجة مِنْ المصادرِ المحليّةِ المختلفةِ على أداءِ الخلطاتِ الإسفلتية. إن تأثير النوعِ ومحتوى المواد المالئة على إمكانيةِ حدوث حالاتَ فشل الخرسانةِ الإسفلتية بالإضافة إلى خواص الخلطات الأخرى قد تم التحُقّق منها. تم عمل دراسة مفصلة بتحضير نماذج خلطات إسفلتية باستعمال ركام من مقلع التاجي و إسفلت (40-50) من مصفاة الدورة و ثلاثة أنواعِ من المواد المالئة (الاسمنت البورتلندي، دخان السيليكا، رماد الفحم) قد تم اختبارها في المختبر. تم عمل تصميم مارشال باستعمال مختلف أنواع المواد المالئة والنِسَبِ المختلفةِ لتَقييم أداءِ الأنواعِ المختلفةِ وكمياتِ المادة المالئة في الخَلِيْطِ الإسفلتي. تم دراسة الخواص الميكانيكية للخلطات باستعمال فحص الشدِّ الغير مباشر، فحص الزحف وخواص مارشال. ثلاثة من درجات الحرارة المختلفةِ (C°15,30,45( قد إستخدمتْ في فحص الشدِّ الغير مباشرِ لتَحرّي سهولةِ تأثّر هذه الخلطات بالتغير بدرجةِ الحرارة. نَتائِج هذه الدراسةِ تُشيرُ بان استبدالِ الإسمنتِ البورتلندي ب الـ9.8 % مِنْ دخانِ السيليكا يحسن مقاومةَ المزيجِ إلى الزحف والشقوق. علاوة على ذلك، إن رماد الفحم لايمكن استعماله كمالئ معدني في تطبيقات خلطات التبليط الاسفلتي .

Abstract

Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) is a gap-graded mix that is gaining popularity worldwide. SMA does not application in Iraq; in order for adopt the use of SMA mixtures particularly on high volume roads such as highways and urban intersections in Iraq. So, the new methodology has to be evaluated using Iraq materials and conventional laboratory methods to insure good performance in the Iraq's highway. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of additives type and content on the performance of stone matrix asphalt mixtures. A detailedlaboratory study is carried out by preparing asphalt mixtures specimens using aggregate from Al-Nibaay, (40-50) grade asphalt from dourah refinery and two types of fiber (carbon fiber and polypropylene fiber) with percentages (0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5%) by weight of total mix and two types of polymer (phenol and polyethylene) with percentages (7.5, 10, 12.5, 15%) by weight of total mix were tested in the laboratory. Compacted mixtures were tested to evaluate the effects on SMA bulk specific gravity, maximum specific gravity, void content, MarshallStability, Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) and permanent deformation. Three different tests temperatures (20, 40,60C°) were employed in the creep test and two temperatures (5, 25 C°) were used in indirect tensile test to investigate the susceptibility of these mixes to change in temperature. The results clearly indicate the importance of using the proper type of stabilizing additive. According to the study results, polymers additives were found to be more effective than fibersadditives. SMA Mix modified with phenol additives can be used in cold and normal temperature area, whereas SMA Mix modified with polyethylene additive can be used in high temperature area.

Abstract

Route planning analysis in Geographical Information System (GIS) providesstrong decision support for users in searching optimal route, finding the optimal path isan important advanced analysis function in GIS. This paper presents the problem ofselecting route to connect two locations in Baghdad city; Alkadomiyah and Algria'at. Four alternatives were investigated using a multi criteria approach and spatial decision support system, (SDSS) that will assist a decision-maker, to select the optimal route fora new road path. In ARCGIS 9.2, spatial analysis has been used to carry out the searchstrategy. In general, the goal of this study is to develop a (GIS) - based model todetermine suitable route. Therefore, the required data for the proposed model buildingwere identified by using, land use, transportation maps, aerial photographs andographic features then reviewed for model development requirements. Four factorswere considered; Geotechnical, Geometrical, social and economical factors for multicriteriaevaluation to select the best routealternative. ARC GIS 9.2 softwarewas usedforthe analysis and modelbuilding requirements.In actualizingtheaim,satelliteagesof the studyarea was providedwhile the land-usemapwas obtainedfromDesignOffice-AmanatBaghdad. The land-use overthe study area was classified intoeightdifferent classes. A Digital Elevated Model(DEM) over the study area wasdownloaded from the Global Mapper Software, used to derive the slope map over thearea of study and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used in weighting theions. Finally, the case study demonstrated that GIS based on multi-criteriaapproach is recognized to be used as a tool for the optimum route selection byconsidering the factors affecting on the decision-maker route selection. Furthermore,saving of money, time and effort.
