Abstract

In the present work, polymer blends were fabricated by mixing two polymersof polypropylene and poly (methyl methacrylate) mixed in different weightpercentage and different particle size of Iraqi kaolin. The study of somemechanical, physical and thermal conductivity properties was carried out on allcomposites. The mechanical tests included (impact, hardness, modulus ofelasticity, yield strength, elongation, stress at break and compression), Lee's discmethod was used to calculate the coefficient of the thermal conductivity ofspecimens before and after reinforcement with kaolin powder. The physicalproperties test included absorption tests, as well as X-ray measurement. Theresults have shown that after the reinforcement with different weight percent ofkaolin powder, most mechanical properties such as hardness , modulus ofelasticity and compression increase while impact and elongation decrease withincreasing in weight percentage and a decreasing in particle size. The results haveshown also that the coefficient of thermal conductivity decreases with increaseweight percentage the water gain is decreased with the increase in weight percentand decrease in particle size of the filler. X-ray diffraction pattern of filledsamples indicates that addition of kaolin adversely affects the crystallization ofPP/PMMA blend.

Abstract

In this work, the mechanical and water absorption properties of polymerblend polypropylene (PP) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) at constant ratio (50/50)composites as a function of kaolin powder weight content in the grain size (100,120 μm) wereinvestigated. Polymer composite was fabricated by mixing polymer blend ( PPLDPE) with(0, 1, 3 ,5, 10, 14) wt.% of kaolin powder to obtain desirable properties. The parameters suchas tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break , yield stress, impact strength, shore Dhardness and water absorption test were carried out on the prepared samples. The resultsshowed that the addition of kaolin powder to the polymer leads to increase the tensilestrength, modulus of elasticity, shore-D hardness and impact strength and it decreases the% elongation at break,. Water absorption of the composites behaves as function of time (days)has also been investigated, and it increases by increasing immersion time for the same fillercontent, while the absorbed amount of water increases, by increasing the wt% of kaolin atconstant immersion time.

تم في هذا البحث دراسة الخواص المیكانیكیة وامتصاصیة الماء لمخلوط بولیمیري یتكون من البولي بروبیلین والبولي100,120 ) تم μm) 50 ) كدالة للنسبة الوزنیة لمسحوق الكاؤلین عبد حجم دقائقي اثیلین الواطئ الكثافة وبنسبة خلط ( 500) من مسحوق الكاؤلین , 1, 3 ,5, 10, 14) wt.% تحضیر المتراكبات بمزج المخلوط البولیمري مع نسب وزنیة مختلفةللحصول على افضل الخصائص. تمت دراسة السلوك المیكانیكي من خلال الفحوصات الاتلافیة ( فحص الشد و وفحصالصلادة وفحص الصدمة وقیاس معامل المرونة وقیاس الاستطالة عند الكسر) أظهرت النتائج العملیة أن اضافة مسحوقالكاؤلین یؤدي الى زیادة قوة الشد وقوة الصدمة والصلادة و یقلل اجهاد الخضوع ویقلل نسبة الاستطالة عند الكسر. كما تمدراسة سلوك امتصاصیة الماء كدالة للزمن للمتراكبات المحضرة وتبین بأن كمیة الماء الممتصة تزداد بزیادة زمن الغمربالماء عند ثبوت النسبة الوزنیة للكاؤلین وكذلك فأنها تزداد بزیادة النسبة الوزنیة لمسحوق الكاؤلین مع ثبات الزمن.
