Abstract

Serum levels of (aspartate alanine transferase) AST, (Creatine kinase) Ck and (lactate dehydrogenase) LDH in 500 patients established myocardial infraction (300 males and 200 females) were screened in order to estimate the rates of low or high activates of these essential enzymes in our local population compared with internationally accepted reference range. The results indicate that clearly subnormal value (i.e. below –3 SD from mean international reference values) for AST, CK and LDH were encounter in 0.0, 1.4 and 12.4% of samples while the levels greater than -3 SD units above mean international reference values were found in 0.3,1.0 and 1.6 % respectively. Thus, the highly significant tendencies toward low serum AST, CK and LHD are rather disturbing and attempts should be made to confirm these finding and elucidate their exact causes.

Abstract

Back ground: Garlic ( Allium sativum ) has been used in herbal medicine for treatment of cardiovascular diseases risk factors such as serum lipids , blood pressure and plasma viscosity .Aim: The aim of present study is to evaluate the effects of garlic on one of the major cardiovascular risk factors which is dyslipidemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus .Materials and Methods: Type 2 diabetic patients with dyslipidemia were enrolled in this study. It covered 50 patients (35 males and 15 females) whose ages ranged between (40 – 75) years. Twenty clinically healthy individuals were included as a control group at the same above ages. Diabetic patients given garlic for period of 6 weeks and 12 weeks after which their serum lipid profiles where measured after fasting for 12 hours and comparisons was made between the treated and untreated patients . Results: It was found that the patients had a significant reduction in both total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) (the main contributing factors to arteriosclerosis) in comparisons to the control group. The administration of garlic ( 1000 mg ) lowers the levels of low density lipoproteins cholesterol ( LDL – C ) and raise the concentrations of high density lipoproteins cholesterol (HDL – C) and so for the very low density lipoproteins cholesterol (VLDL–C) if compared with that of the control group .Conclusion: Garlic may play an important role in the treatment of dyslipidemic patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus has been known to associate with lipid disorders and cardiovascular complication. This study was carried out to determine the changes in serum lipid profile in type 2 diabetic patients. Lipid profile was measured in sera of thirty males and females type-2 diabetic patients who attend Baqubah Educational Hospital in Diayla province and compared with thirty healthy of matched age and sex, as control group. The result indicate the presence of significant increase in serum TG (p < 0.0001), TC (p < 0.0001), LDL-C (p <0.0001), and VLDL-C (P <0.0001). Serum HDL-C levels were significantly decreased (p < 0.0001) in type 2 diabetic patients. In conclusion several lipid abnormalities were found in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
