أن الذي يستقرأ التاريخ فإنه يلاحظ أن عتبة بن أبي لهب له موقع وصورة لها المدح أولى من الذم بل يتضح لديه سبب تشويه صورة هذه الشخصية لما لها من مواقف مشرفة مع الرسول (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) وأهل بيته (عليهم السلام) الذين يمثلون الخط الحق الذي بقي مناهضاً للسلطة الزمنية خصوصاً بعد وفاة الرسول (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) حيث بدأت الأقلام المأجورة تبث سمومها مقابل الأموال التي تدفع بها الحكام لتشويه الحقائق خصوصاً في حقبة الحكم الأموي وما أدخل من روايات موضوعة ومزيفة . ومن خلال هذا البحث الذي بين أيدينا والذي يتناول شخصية عتبة بن أبي لهب نحاول تحقيق أهدافنا في الوصول للحقيقة المنشودة ، وقد قسم البحث إلى أربع مباحث تناول المبحث الأول التعريف بشخصية عتبة بن أبي لهب (أسمه ونسبه وأولاده وزوجاته ) لبيان أهميته التاريخية من خلال ارتباطه بالنبي (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) وكذلك معرفة امتداده التاريخي ، أما المبحث الثاني فكان عن إسلامه وأهميته بالنسبة لقلب النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) و مواقفه مع النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) وبيان حقيقة إيمانه من خلالها ، وكان المبحث الثالث عن موقفه من الخلافة والذي يوضح توجهه السياسي بعد وفاة النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ، أما المبحث الرابع فتناول وفاته وما فيها من روايات مضطربة وما هو الصحيح منها وما هو غير الصحيح
