Abstract

Background:Treatment of acute poisoning due to drug overdose in general depends on the prevention of further absorption of the drug and acceleration of elimination, using specific antidotes. Drugs adsorption is of significant importance in physical pharmacy for the preparation of physical antidotes.Objective:To investigate the adsorption of glimepiride from aqueous solution on two adsorbents (activated charcoal and Iraqi kaolin).Method:UV-Spectrophotometric technique was used to obtain the quantitive adsorption data at different conditions of pH and temperature.Results:The quantities of glimepiride adsorbed on activated charcoal and kaolin were increased with decreasing temperature. Adsorption isotherms of glimepiride on both surfaces were consistent with Freundlich adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic functions (∆G, ∆H and ∆S) were useful in describing the spontaneity of the adsorption process.Conclusion:The quantity of the drug that is adsorbed on activated charcoal was higher than that adsorbed on kaolin surface therefore; the activated charcoal is a better antidote.Keywords:Glimepiride, Adsorption, Activated charcoal, Iraqi kaolin

Abstract

The purification of diluted aqueous solution from toxic Ni (II) ion was investigated using commercial and bitter orange leaves activated charcoal as adsorbents through batch method. The contact times between the adsorbents and adsorbate at 298 K and pH of 5 were studied. The percentage metal removal approached equilibrium within 75 min on Commercial and 90 min on prepared charcoal surfaces. The experimental data of the metal removal equilibrium were correlated by either the Langmuir or Freundlich equations. Results indicate that the Langmuir model gave a better fit to the experimental data than the Freundlich equation. Kinetic processes of Ni2+ adsorption on Commercial and prepared charcoal were described by applying pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order rate equations which that the adsorption process obey pseudo-second-order rate equation.

يتناول البحث تنقية المحلول المائي من ايون النيكل الثنائي باستخدام الفحم المنشط التجاري والفحم المحضر من اوراق النارنج كسطوح امتزاز ودراسة زمن التماس بين المادة الممتزة وسطحي الامتزاز عند درجة حرارة 298 كلفن والدالة الحامضية 5 حيث بينت نتائج الدراسة ان النسبة المئوية لإزالة الفلز تصل الى حالة الاتزان عند 75 دقيقة على سطح الفحم التجاري و90 دقيقة على سطح الفحم المحضر. حللت ايزوثيرمات الامتزاز وفق نموذجي لانكماير و فريندلش اذ وجد ان ايزوثيرمات الامتزاز تتبع معادلة لانكماير. كما تضمن البحث دراسة حركية لإمتزاز ايون النيكل الثنائي على سطحي الفحم التجاري والمحضر بتطبيق معادلات المرتبة الاولى والثانية حيث اظهرت النتائج ان عملية الامتزاز تطيع قانون المرتبة الثانية بشكل افضل وبمعامل ارتباط 0.9992 للفحم التجاري و 0.9974 للفحم المحضر من اوراق النارنج.الكلمـات المفتاحيـة: الفحـم المنشـط، ايـون النيكـل، لانكمايرايزوثيرم، فريندلش ايزوثيرم.
