Abstract

The work concerned with studying the effect of (SiO2) addition as a filler on the adhesive properties of (PVA).Samples were prepared as sheets by using casting method.The mechanical properties showed that increase in tensile strength from (34MPa) to (68MPa) when (SiO2) added to (PVA).The adhesive strength showed that joint properties depend upon specific adhesive characteristic of material (PVA)and(SiO2PVA)composites at different concentrations (1.5%,2.5%,3.5%,4.5wt%), the cohesive strength of the adhesive material, the joint design, and adherent type(Sponge Rubber(SR),Natural leather(NL),Vulcanized Rubber(VR),and Cartoon). The results proved the tensile strength increased with (SiO2) ratio, so it can be used as the adhesive material.Shear strength showed an increase with (SiO2) ratio of sponge rubber,and cartoon adherent,whereas it was increased up to 2.5% for Natural Leather,and Vulcanized Rubber then decreased;That suggested it is most suitable for sponge rubber adhesive and cartoon than the other adherents.

تمت دراسة تأثير اضافة (SiO2) على خصائص الالتصاق لل(PVA), حضرت النماذج بشكل الواح وباستخدام طريقة الصب. أظهرت الخواص الميكانيكية زيادة في متانة الشد لمنطقة الالتصاق باضافة (SiO2) الى (PVA) من (34MPa) الى (68MPa) .بينت قوة اللصق بان خواص الربط تعتمد على خواص اللاصق (PVA) او (SiO2PVA) بمختلف التراكيز (1.5%,2.5%,3.5%,4.5wt%)، متانة اللصق لمادة اللصق,تصميم نقطة الربط, نوع المواد المراد لصقها (المطاط الاسفنجي,الجلد الطبيعي, المطاط المفلكن,الكارتون)أظهرت النتائج ان متانة الشد تزداد بزيادة نسبة (SiO2), لذا يمكن استخدامها كمواد لاصقة.بينت نتائج قوة القص زيادة في متانة القص بازدياد نسبة (SiO2) بالنسبة للمطاط الاسفنجي (SR) والكارتون (Cartoon) في حين هناك زيادة في قوة القص بازدياد نسبة SiO22.5% بالنسبة للجلد الطبيعي والمطاط المفلكن (VR) ومن ثم تقل. من خلال نتائج البحث يمكن التوصية بامكانية استخدام SiO2كمادة لاصقة واعدة واكثر مناسبة للمطاط الاسفنجي والكارتون.

Abstract

Background: One of the challenges to use chlorhexidine is its effect on the amount of microleakage after restoration; however, use of the materials with antibacterial properties after tooth preparation and before restoration has been widespread. The objective of this, in-vitro, study was to evaluate the influence of consepsis (chlorhexidine gloconate disinfectant) application on microleakage in class II cavities restored with light cured composite using universal adhesive system; etch and rinse technique –self etch technique.Materials and Methods: Forty class II cavities were prepared on mesial and distal surfaces of 20 non-carious mandibular third molars. The cavities were divided into four groups; (n =10 for each group). G1: cavities were bonded with (single bond universal adhesive, 3MESPE) after etching with 35% phosphoric acid - etch and rinse technique, without chlorhexidine , G2: chlorhexidine was used after etching with 35% phosphoric acid, then cavities were bonded with (single bond universal adhesive, 3MESPE) - etch and rinse technique . G3: cavities were bonded with (single bond universal adhesive, 3MESPE) - self etch technique, without chlorhexidine, G4: The chlorhexidine was used before bonding. All groups were restored with non – hybrid composite resin (Z 350, 3MESPE). Micrlerackage was evaluated at gingival margin using methylene blue dye penetration method. In each cavity the dye penetration in millimeters was measured by strereomicroscope. Statistical analysis for the data was carried out using one-way ANOVA and LSD test.Results: Group G2 produced the least microleakage which is statistically highly significantly different than the remaining groups. Group G3 produced the highest microleakage which is statistically high significant difference than G1 and G2, but the difference is not significant with group G4.Conclusions: Consepsis can be used as cavity disinfectants when restoring the cavities with single bond universal adhesive as etch and rinse technique. However, its effect seems to be lower when using the single bond universal adhesive as self-etch technique.

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of two denture adhesives on incisal bite force until denture dislodgement without and with the adhesive. This in-practice study assessed also patients’ perception regarding the use of adhesive. Materials and Methods: A total of 6 patients )2 men, 4 women( who wore complete maxillary and mandibular dentures were tested for denture performance both without and with denture adhesive. A locally constructed digital biting force device was used to measure the incisal bite force. Two adhesives pastes )Kin oro and Bony plus( were used in the study. Patients were asked to bite on the digital biting force device and the readings of incisal bite force were recorded. Patient perceptions )instant perception and delayed perception( after 1 week of using the denture adhesive were also assessed by a questionnaire and analyzed for denture performance on chewing and mastication, retention and fitness, confidence, comfort, and speaking. Results: The result showed that denture adhesives improved the incisal bite force of complete denture wearers significantly. The incisal bite force )in kg( )mean : without adhesive 1.78, with Kin oro 3.04, and with Bony plus 3.21(. There was an improvement in chewing and mastication, retention and fitness, confidence, comfort, and speaking after using both types of denture adhesives. Conclusions: The use of denture adhesive was found to be significantly effective in improving the incisal bite force of complete dentures until the dislodgement of upper denture. Bony plus paste adhesive was found to be more effective than Kin oro paste. Subjectively, the patients reported an improved perception of denture performance and that the use of adhesive provided greater confidence when using the prosthesis

Abstract

Microleakage is important for assessing the success of adhesive restorative materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of resin composite restorations bonded with three types of adhesive systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty four sound human third molars were used. Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface by a diamond cylinder bur No. (1543M). Samples was assigned randomly to three groups (N = 8): Group Ι: Cavities were treated with total etch adhesive system (Adper Single Bond 2Adhesive, 3M ESPE, USA). Group II: Cavities are treated with one step self-etch adhesive system (OptiBond All In One, kerr, USA). Group III: Cavities were treated with two step self-etch adhesive system (CLEARFIL SE BOND, kurary, Japan). Cavities were restored in bulk technique withresin composite (Ceram X, DENTSPLY, USA). Restorations were polished and after storage in water for 24 hours at 37°C the samples were thermocycled between 5-50°C for 300 cycles in water baths then immersed in methylene blue solution for 24 hours. Dye leakage was assessed by examining longitudinal sections in a stereomicroscope at X10magnification. Data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test at 5%significant level. RESULTS: A significant differences in microleakage were observed among restorations (p < 0.05).One step adhesive bonded restorations demonstrate significantly higher leakage value than two step. No significant differences were observed between total etch adhesive and self-etch adhesive (p>0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The microleakage of resin composite restoration was influenced by adhesive type. One step self-etch bonded restoration was more prone to leakage than total etch and two step bonded restoration

Abstract

Background: The temperature of the adhesive may influence the chemical reactions and consequently interferewith bonding procedures, compromising the quality and durability of the bonding. This in vitro study was designed toassess and compare the effect of temperature variation in an orthodontic office on the shear bond strengths andthe types of bond failure of two composite adhesive systems, a No-Mix and Light Cure adhesive systems.Materials and Methods: Ninety sound human upper first premolars were collected and divided randomly into sixequal groups, three groups for One-Step and three groups for Light Cure adhesive systems with 15 teeth each. Aftera careful and standardized bonding procedure, the samples were subjected to shear tests using a Tinius-OlsenUniversal Testing machine. After debonding, the bracket bases and the corresponding teeth were examined under astereomicroscope with a magnification of 20X to determine the predominant failure type.Results: The results of this study showed that for the One-Step system temperature variation has a non-significantdifference, while for the Light Cure system the refrigerated adhesive has significant higher shear bond strength. Therewas a non-significant difference in the failure site for both of the adhesive systems used in the study.Conclusion: In short, temperature variation affected Light Cure adhesive system more than No-Mix adhesive system

Abstract

Aim: the shear bond strength testing has been accomplished to lead orthodontists inselection of adhesives and brackets. The current research was conducted to assessthe effect of using different types of bonding material on the shear bond strengthof plastic brackets.Materials and methods: Thirty upper first premolar teeth were utilized. There were 3groups: - chemical composite, no mix chemical composite and light curecomposite. Samples were then subjected to shear bond test using Instron testingmachine. Samples data were then analyzed and compared using ANOVA andLSD tests.Results: The results indicated that the chemical composite presented the greatestvalue of mean shear bond strength. On the other hand, the light cure gave the leastmean shear bond strength. Highly significant differences between two groups(P≤0.01) ;and among all groups(P≤0.01)were obtained.Conclusion: Chemical composites provided a greater shear bond strength than othertypes of composite (no mix and light cure).

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Nowadays the final outcome of wound closure using tissue adhesives and suture material is making a real competition for better results. Cosmetic outcome is regarded as the first demand for the patients. The aim of this study was to make a comparison between the two closure methods in terms of cosmetic outcome, complication and patients’ satisfaction. Method: A prospective comparative study was conducted at Rizgary Teaching Hospital and West Erbil Emergency Hospital in Erbil city from March 2012 to March 2013. A total of 105 patients were included in the study. The method of closure was selected alternatively between tissue adhesive (octylcyanoacrylate) and suture material. Analysis for cosmetic outcome, complications and patients’ satisfaction were done using the statistical package for the social sciences (version 19). Results: The complications were 25% (13 patients) in the tissue adhesive group and 18% (9 patients) in the sutured group. Of the 44 patients in the tissue adhesive group, 86.4% (38 patients) were satisfied; while of the 61 patients in the sutured group, 88% (54 patients) were satisfied with the end result. Excellent cosmetic outcome achieved in 77.3% in the tissue adhesive group and 80.3% in the sutured group. Conclusion: Tissue adhesive (octylcyanoacrylate) is effective and reliable in primary skin closure, yielding similar cosmetic results to standard suturing method. Tissue adhesive is faster and offers several practical advantages over suture repair.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the shear bonding strength of stainless steel brackets bonded with self– etching primer adhesive system (TransbondTM 3M Uniteck, Monrovia, California, USA), compared with same system which employ 35% phosphoric acid gel, sepa-rated primer and adhesive. Also to assess and compare clinically the brackets bond-ing failure rate after using the 2 different techniques in orthodontic patients and to examine bracket / adhesive failure mode by using modified adhesive remnant index (MARI). Fifty six extracted human premo-lars used in the laboratory part, they were divided into 2 groups (I and II), each one subdivided into upper first and second, lower first and second premolars; 7 for each subgroup. In the first group bonding was carried out by using the conventional technique (phosphoric acid / adhesive) wh-ile in the second one, the self–etching pri-mer was used. In the clinical part 15 pat-ients with upper and lower fixed applian-ces (central, lateral incisors, canines and premolars) with 13– 16 years old. The fol-low up period extended into 12–15 mon-ths. The statistical analyses in the laboratory (in vitro) part reported significantly lower but acceptable shear bond strength (8.69 and 8.42 MPa) for the upper first and second premolars, and 8.13 and 8.99 MPa for lower first and second premolars in comparison with the conventional groups (11.61 and 11.63 MPa) for upper first and second premolars, and 11.48 and 11.59 MPa for the lower first and second premolars as t–values were significant (2.69, 3.05 for the upper first and second premolars; 2.68, 2.45 for the lower first and second premolars) at p < 0.05 between study groups, but in the clinical trial no significant difference between the groups were recorded in relation to bonding failure rate as values of Z test of two proportions were ranged between 0.98 and 1.94, 0.00 and 1.94 for the upper and lower arches respectively, in spite of the higher percentages of failure rate for the self–etching primer adhesive group. The MARI reported higher frequencies at score 2, and score 3 for the control and experimental (self–etching primer) groups respectively. It can be concluded that in spite of the lower bonding strength values for the self– etching primer adhesive, but the results appear to be acceptable and this adhesive is recommended to be used in orthodontic practice. In accompanied to that the residual adhesive amount were smaller than those of the conventional one so that less damage happened to enamel surface during debonding procedures.

Abstract

Aims: The aims of the present study is evaluate the dentist knowledge and believes toward denture adhesive through generation of discussion among dentist (in ministry of health and ministry of higher education) in Mosul city. Materials and Methods: In a dental meeting that held on April 2009 in College of Dentistry ,university of Mosul ,a questionnaire paper was given to 264 dentist which consist of two: part the first one evaluate dentist knowledge about denture adhesive, the second one evaluate the dentist attitude toward denture adhesive. Result: The findings of the present study showed that (9.8%, 67.8% and 22.4%) of dentists had respectively weak, moderate and good knowledge toward denture adhesive while( 3.1%, 80.4% and 16.6%) had respectively negative, moderate and positive attitude toward denture adhesive materials. The 2 test showed non significant statistical relation between dentist knowledge about denture adhesives and their previous years of experience, place of work, sex and their degree of education. Statistical analysis methods used to analyze and asses the result of this study were SPSS version 13.0. Conclusions: The findings of the present study showed that dentist knowledge and attitude toward denture adhesive materials was moderate. Their information about denture adhesive indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages were very poor therefore prosthodontic specialist in College of Dentistry, University of Mosul should insist on denture adhesive in student's curriculum with increasing the credit hours

Abstract

Abstract
The impression material is used mainly in the area of removable partial and complete denture
and in the construction of inlays, crowns and bridges. They are used also in dental laboratories for
duplicating master casts.
Recent studies have evaluated the bond strength of selected impression materials. This research
was performed to study the shear bond strength of impression materials to tray by testing forty
samples, each of which consisted of two blocks of acrylic with the impression material sandwiched
between them. Tray adhesive was used to increase adhesion between impression material and
custom tray. Also this research showed that by the use of perforation impression materials adhere
firmly to the impression trays. Therefore perforation - adhesive combination gave acceptable
results.
Experimental results indicated that polyether impression material showed higher shear bond
strength values to cold-cure acrylic than addition silicone impression material for both control and
perforated samples without adhesive application. The shear mean bond strength values of polyether
to the tray material after adhesive application were decreased. While, the shear mean bond strength
increased significantly when addition silicone was used with the adhesive and with the combination
samples.
