Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of OSTEON, PRP and the combination of both of them on the healing of experimentally induced bone defects in rabbits. Materials and Meth-ods: Fifteen domestic rabbits were used in this study; four bone defects were made in the tibia of each rabbit. The defects were filled with OSTEON, PRP, OSTEON / PRP and the other left unfilled as con-trol. Specimens were collected at one, two and four weeks after surgery. Radiographical and histologi-cal examinations were used to evaluate healing depending of the amount of new bone formed. Results: It was found that the OSTEON / PRP combination led to a significant healing compared to other groups at first week only. On the other hand PRP alone showed better result than OSTEON alone in the three periods. Conclusion: It was concluded that PRP plasma exert a beneficial effect on healing pro-cess when added to bone substitute material OSTEON.

Abstract

Background: The restoration of bone continuity and bone union are complex processes, and their success is determined by the effectiveness of osteosynthesis. The use of plants for healing purposes predates human history and forms the source of current modern medicineThe aim of this study: It was histological evaluation of effect of topical application of flavonoid on healing of induced bone defect in rabbit tibia.Material and method: Twenty-four Adult New Zealand rabbits used in this study, they were divided into four groups for the healing periods (3days, 1,2, and 4weeks) Two holes were induced in rabbit tibia one on the left side and has been left to heal normally as control. While, the other hole made on the right side filled with flavonoid extract regarded as experimental. Sacrificing of the animals were done according to the healing periods. Routine processing and sectioning technique was performed for histological and histomorphometric evaluation.Results: Histological findings revealed that progression of bone healing process was accelerated after flavonoid application as shown by examination of histological sections and results of statistical analysis that indicated increase of mean count difference of cells between control and experimental groups obviously noticed at early healing durations. Histomorphometric analysis for all bone parameters examined in this study, showed increase in mean count difference while bone marrow space decreased.Conclusion: The study revealed that topical application of flavonoid was effective in promoting bone healing process

Abstract

Background and aim: Pomegranate is a medicinal herb that can promote healing of periodontal tissue through differentiation of mesenchymal cells both in vivo and in vitro. Therefore, this study is to investigate the effect of oral supplementation of Punicagranatum L. peel extract on bone defect in rabbit.Methods: Forty five male rabbits were divided into 3 groups; group 1; baseline group(5 rabbits) left without bone defect. Group 2; study group (20 rabbits) with bone defect model that received daily 1ml of oral supplementation of pomegranate peel extract (PoPx). Group 3; control group (20 rabbits) with bone defect model that received distilled water. Bone defect was done into facial plate of lower right central incisor. Blood biopsies by cardiocentesis at times (base line, 3h, 1, 3 and 7days) for estimation of serum calcium, phosphorous, and vitamin D levels.Results: The results showed a significant increase in serum calcium and phosphorous levels only after 3 hours and 1 day of bone defect, in rabbits receiving water and rabbits receiving pomegranate peel extraction. Serum vitamin D level shows significant increase in all time intervals reaching maximum value after three days in rabbits receiving pomegranate peel extract, while no significant change was observed in rabbits receiving water.Conclusions: Supplementation of pomegranate peel extract can increase vitamin D absorption, thus it may promote the bone healing process.
