Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACK GROUND:Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a common, chronic widespread pain syndrome usually associated with other somatic and psychologic symptoms including fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties Oxidative stress means an alteration in the delicate balance between free radicals and the scavenging capacity of antioxidant enzymes in favor of free radical in the body system.OBJECTIVE:To evaluate and compare the antioxidants and lipid peroxidation in patients with fibromyalgia and healthy control.PATIENTS AND METHOD;The study has included sixty patients with FMS (40 females and 20 males) and thirty healthy subjects. The subjects were selected from people attending the out patients clinic in Medical City- Baghdad Teaching Hospital- Rheumatology& Rehabilitation Consultation Unit. Laboratory parameters included: uric acid,albumin,caeruloplasmin,total thaiol,malondiaaldehyde(MDA) and peroxinitrate(ONOO¯ ).RESULTS:MDA and uric acid levels in serum of patients with fibromyalgia were significantly higher than in the control group. While the levels of ONOO¯ GSH,CP,albumin in serum of patients with fibromyalgia were significantly lower than in healthy control.CONCLUSION:oxidative stress may have a role in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia syndrome.

Abstract

In this paper we consider the generalized Liu-type estimator and combine it into subset selection criterion using Cp statistic. Our proposed method can be derived via natural extension of two well-known techniques: one is shrinkage estimators and the other select the best subset.

Abstract

This study involved the effect of anew nickel (II) complexs with formla [NiL2(H2O)2].2.5ETOH where L=Bis[5-(p-nitrophenyL)-4-phenyL-1,2,4-traizole-3-dithocarbamato hydrazide] diaqua. nickel(II). Ethanol(2.5).and anti-cancer drug cyclophosphamide on specific actifity of two Liver enzymes (GOT,GPT) in the (Liver,kidney) tissues and on the creatinine Level in the kidney byUtilizing an invivosystem in femalmice.The result showed that inhibition in the activity of GPT and GOT enzymes in theLiver and in both nickel (II) complex and cyclophosphamide drug (CP) . mice weretreated with three doses (90,180,320) µg/mouse for three days for each group.The Liver show's the highest rate of GPT inhibition was about 97.43% at180µg/mouse regarding the kidney the inhibition rate was about 98.63% at 180µg/mouse .The maximum inhibition of GOT enzame in the Liver was about 77. 48% ataconcentration 180µg/mouse and the inhbition rate of GOT enzyme in the kidney was about 97.87% at aconcentration 320µg/mouse.The result showed the effect of nickel (II) complex on the creatinine Level in the kidney ,The maximum activation was about 99.45% at 320µg/mouse.

تمت دراسة تأثير معقد النيكل (ll) الجديد الذي صيغته [NiL2(H2O)2]2.5EtoH اذيكون الليكاند L بالمعقد هوBis [5-(p-nitro phenyl)-4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-dithio carbamatohydrazide] diaqua. Nickel(ll). Ethanol(2.5). وعقار السايكلوفوسفومايد Cyclophosphamide (CP) المضاد للسرطان في الفعالية النوعية لانزيمي (GOT,GPT) في انسجة الكبد والكلية وفي مستوى الكرياتنين في الكلية لاناث الفئران المختبرية في نظام داخل جسم الكائن الحي invivo .وقد اظهرت النتائج وجود تثبيط في فعالية انزيمي GOT,GPT في الكبد والكلية لكلتا المجموعتين المعاملتين بمعقد النيكل (ll) الجديد وعقار السايكلوفوسفومايد من خلال استعمال ثلاثة تراكيز هي( (320,180,90 مايكروغرام /للفأر ولمدة ثلاثة ايام .وقد سجلت النتائج اعلى مستوى للتثبيط لانزيم GPT في الكبد هي 97.43% عند التركيز 180 مايكروغرام للفأر اما في الكلية فقد بلغت نسبة التثبيط عند التركيز 180 مايكروغرام/للفأر هي(98.65%) كما بلغت اعلى مستوى للتثبيط لانزيم GOTفي الكبد (%77.47) عندالتركيز 180مايكروغرامللفأر اما الكلية فقد بلغ مستوى التثبيط لانزيم GOT كان عند التركيز320 مايكروغرامللفأر هي (90(% 97..كما اظهرت النتائج تأثير معقد النيكل(ll) في مستوى الكرياتنين في الكلية,فقد سجلت النتائج اعلى مستوى للتحفيز بمعقدالنيكل(ll) عند التركيزٍ 320 مايكروغرامللفأرهي (99.45%)

An Assessment of Salivary Leptin and Resistin Levels in Type Two Diabetic Patients with Chronic Periodontitis (A Comparative Study)

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitusand chronic periodontitis hold a close relationship that has been the focus ofmany researches. Currently there is an appreciation to the role of adipose tissue-derived substances "the adipokines"in immune-inflammatory responses; also, there is an interest in using the simple non-invasive saliva in diagnosing andlinking oral and general health problems. The current study aims to determine the periodontal health status in thechronic periodontitis patients with and without poorly or well controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus, measure the salivarylevels of two adipokines "leptin and resistin", pH and flow rate and then correlate between these clinical periodontal,biochemical and physical parameters in each study and control groups.Materials and Methods: Seventy five males were recruited for the study, with an age range of (35-50) years. Thesubjects were divided into four groups: two non-diabetic groups: one of them with healthy periodontium andsystemically healthy (Control, 15 subjects) and the other with chronic periodontitis (20 patients) and two type 2diabetic groups: well controlled (20 patients) and poorly controlled (20 patients) both of them with chronicperiodontitis.Unstimulated whole salivary samples were collected from all of the participants; salivary flow rate andpH were measured and then biochemically analyzed for assessment of resistin and leptin levels.Clinical periodontalparameters included: the plaque index, the gingival index, the bleeding on probing, the probing pocket depth andthe clinical attachment level had been recorded for all subjects at four sites per tooth except for the third molars.Results: The results of clinical periodontal examination revealed that the group of chronic periodontitis with poorlycontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus had the worst periodontal health status. The biochemical analysis demonstratedthat the lowest level of salivary leptin was foundin the chronic periodontitis with poorly controlled type 2 diabetesmellitus group. In addition, the highest level of salivary resistin was demonstrated in chronic periodontitis with wellcontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus group. When the salivary flow rate and pH were measured, it was found that theywere decreased in the study groups as compared to the control group. A non-significant moderate negativecorrelation between salivary leptin with pH in the control group was found. While, salivary resistin demonstrated ahigh significant moderate positive correlation with the gingival index in the non-diabeticchronic periodontitis groupand a non-significant moderate negative correlation with salivary flow ratein the control group. Finally, the studyfound that the correlation between salivary leptin and resistin was non-significant weak negative in each of the studyand control groups.Conclusion: It can be concluded that poorly controlled type 2 diabetic patients have more periodontal tissuedestruction and less salivary flow rate than well controlled type 2 diabetic patients and non-diabetic patients all ofthem with chronic periodontitis. Salivary Resistin and Leptin hormones may be useful biochemical markers ofperiodontal tissue destruction and this will provide better opportunities in early diagnosis, monitoring and efficientmanagement of periodontal diseases and T2DM.

Abstract

Line L20B The origanum vulgare L. plant which used as a medical plants for treatment of chest and bronchial inflammation and others. The copper complex (II) regarded as a. chemical treatments which used as anti-cancer therapy by its cytotoxic effect towards cancer cell line and the percentage of inhibition. This study involoved effect of the active compounds for the aqueous extract of the origanum vulgare L. and effect of a new copper(II)complex on cell comparison with cytotoxic drug cyclophosphamide (cp) positive control, through employed in vitro system by study of inhibition percentage rate on murine cell line L20B derived from mouse cell (fibroblasts), Using four concentrations (31.25,62.5,125,250) microgram/ ml within two exposure time (48,72) hours. The results showed that increased of inhibition percentage a according to concentration with significant difference (p< 0.05) for both aqueous extract plant and copper (II) complex comparison with cyclophosphamide (cp) and there is no effect of time exposure on inhibition percentage. We conclude from this study that effect of aqueous origanum vulgare extract and copper (II) complex similar to effect of cytotoxic drug (cp) and there is no significant difference between them at all concentrations. The inhibition levels reached to 52.41%, 58.21% and 58.93% respectively at 250µg/ml after 72 hour exposure time.

يعد نبات المردقوش origanum vulgare L. من النباتات الطبية المستخدمة لعلاج الالتهابات الصدرية والقصبية وغيرها. كما يعتبر النحاس احد العلاجات الكيمياوية المستخدمة كمضاد للسرطان من خلال تأثيرها السمي الخلوي اتجاه انواع من الخطوط الخلوية السرطانية. تم دراسة تأثير المركبات الفعالة لمستخلص نبات المردقوش L. Origanum Vulgare وتأثير معقد النحاس (II) المحضر الجديد على الخط الخلوي L20B المحور وراثياً مقارنة مع العقار الكيمياوي ذو التأثير السمي الخلوي سايكلوفوسفومايد cyclophosphamide ((cp كسيطرة موجبة،من خلال توظيف نظام خارج جسم الكائن الحي in vitro عن طريق دراسة معدلات النسب المئوية للتثبيط على نمو الخط الخلوي L20B لارومة الخلايا الليفية للفئران المحورة وراثياً. تم مـن خلالـه استخـدام اربـع تراكيـز هـي 250,125,62.5,31.25)) مايكـروغرام/مل ضمن مدتي تعريض (72,48) ساعة. وقد اظهرت النتائج زيادة النسبة المئوية للتثبيط بزيادة التركيز من خلال وجود فروق معنوية بمستوى احتمالية (p< 0.05) لكل من المستخلص المائي لنبات المردقوش ومعقد النحاس (II) مقارنة بعقار السايكلوفوسفومايد (cp)، وعدم حصول اي تأثير لزيادة فترة التعريض على النسب المئوية للتثبيط كما بينت الدراسة تأثير المستخلص المائي لنبات المردقوش ومعقد النحاس ((II مشابة لتأثير العقار (cp) ذو التأثير السمي الوراثي حيث لم تظهر فروق معنوية بينهم بالتراكيز المستخدمة .وقد بلغت مستويات التثبيط %58.93, %58.21, %52.41 على التوالي عند التركيز 250 مايكروغرام/ مل خلال مدة تعريض 72 ساعة.

Abstract

Back ground: multiple sclerosis (MS) has a much higher incidence among Caucasians that in any other race. Females are much more susceptible than males and white females living in colder weather areas are much more susceptible than those living in warmer areas. Oxidative stress means an alteration in the delicate balance between free radicals and the scavenging capacity of antioxidant enzymes in favor of free radicals in the body system.Objective: To evaluate and compare the antioxidants and lipid peroxidation in patients with MS and healthy control.Patients and method: The study has included thirty patients with MS (16 females and 14 males) and thirty healthy subjects. The subjects were selected from people attending the out patients clinic of Baghdad Teaching Hospital in Medical City. Laboratory parameters included were: uric acid, albumin, and caeruloplasmin, total thaiol, malondiaaldehyde (MDA) and peroxinitrate (ONOO¯).Results: MDA and ONOO¯ levels in serum of patients with MS were significantly higher than in the control group. While the levels of GSH, CP, albumin, uric acid, iron, copper and zinc in serum of patients with MS were significantly lower than in healthy control.Conclusion: Oxidative stress may have a role in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis syndromes.

Abstract

Microstructure imaging interpretation of polished surface has become well established as a method for the study of cement and concrete microstructure. This paper is an attempt to provide micro-level examination to the microstructure of cement paste in concrete particularly the hydrated mineral admixture and interfacial transition zone, which received increasing attention due to their effect on the hardened concrete properties. Furthermore, illustrations are provided of the transition area of cement paste adjacent to the aggregate border as well as other cement paste areas. SEM images reveal that pozzolanic reaction is not the only benefit of using mineral admixture. Spherical shape of grains is important to improve the microstructure of cement paste particularly in the interfacial transition zone.

اصبحت طريقة تفسير الصور المجهرية للسطوح المعالجة، طريقة موثوقة لدراسة البنية المجهرية للسمنت والخرسانة. تركز هذه الدراسة على اختبار البنية المجهرية لعجينة السمنت في الخرسانة وبالخصوص اماهة المضاف المعدني وكذلك المسافة البينية التي يتزايد الاهتمام بها بسبب دورها المهم في صفات الخرسانة المتصلبة المنتجة. كما يركز البحث على اعطاء التوضيحات عن المسافة البينية قرب حافة حبيبات الركام وكذلك عجينة السمنت. بينت صور المجهر الماسح الالكتروني ان التفاعل البوزولاني هو ليس الفائدة الوحيدة من استخدام المضاف المعدني بل ان الشكل الكروي للحبيبات يعتبر مهما في تحسين البنية المجهرية وخاصة في منطقة المسافة البينية.

Effects of 35% Versus 10% Carbamide Peroxide At-Home Bleaching Agents with or without MI Paste Plus on Enamel Properties

Abstract

This study compared the effects of 35% with 10% carbamideperoxide (CP) home used bleaching agents on enamel colorchange, microhardness, and surface changes in association withMI paste plus (CPP-ACPF). Forty buccal and lingual enamelsamples from twenty human third molars were prepared anddivided into four groups (n=10). The groups were bleached fortwo weeks according to different bleaching regimens as follow;G1 bleached with 10%CP, G2 bleached with 35%CP, G3 bleachedwith a mixture of 10%CP and MI paste plus, and G4 bleachedwith a mixture of 35%CP and MI paste plus. Color change wasrecorded with a colorimeter before and after bleaching and totalcolor differences (ΔE*) was calculated. Vickers microhardnesstest was recorded for all the samples before and after treatment.One sample from each group was evaluated for surface changes byscan electron microscopy (SEM). The data were analyzed withrepeated measure of variance and student's t-test at p<0.05. Nosignificant difference in ΔE* was recorded among the four groups(p>0.05). Significant reduction in enamel microhardness was onlyrecorded for G2 (p=0.003). SEM for G3 and G4 showed obviousmineral deposition. Similar teeth color whitening can be resultedafter two weeks of bleaching with both 10%CP and 35%CP whenused as recommended by the manufacturer with and without theaddition of MI paste plus. Using 35%CP decreased enamelmicrohardness significantly, whereas MI paste plus when mixedwith both bleaching agents could compensate for themicrohardness reduction.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis that features the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of one or more joints. Cartilage is a protein substance that serves as a "cushion" between the bones of the joints. Among the over 100 different types of arthritis conditions, osteoarthritis is the most common, affecting over 25 million people in the United States. Osteoarthritis occurs more frequently as we age. Osteoarthritis is abbreviated as OA or referred to as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease (DJD). Osteoarthritis commonly affects the hands, feet, spine, and large weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees. Osteoarthritis usually has no known cause and is referred to as primary osteoarthritis. When the cause of the osteoarthritis is known, the condition is referred to as secondary osteoarthritis.OBJECTIVE:The main objective of this study is to evaluate the association between the levels of Interleukin-8 and some antioxidant in patients with OA.PATIENTS AND METHODS:This study was performed during the period from April 2010 to February 2011, and included 50 patients with OA according to the American College of Rheumatology ACR 1990; their age range from 40-60 years with mean age of 46.66 ± 2.83 years. These patients were matched by age and sex to 25 healthy control subjects with the mean age of 48.32 ± 2.92 years. Blood samples were taken from each individual and separated for the estimation of IL-8 and some antioxidants levels using enzyme – liked immunosorbent assay (ElIZA) technique and colorimetric method. The laboratory tests were done in Teaching Laboratories of the Medical City and the Department of Physiological Chemistry / College of Medicine University of Baghdad.RESULTS:The level of IL-8 and Ceruloplasmin (CP) in serum of patients with OA was significantly higher than in serum of healthy control while the level of Glutathione (GSH) and S.uric acid in serum of OA patients was significantly higher than healthy control and there is no significant difference in level of serum albumin between the patients and control.CONCLUSION:It is clear from this study that there is a relationship between the levels of IL-8, CP, GSH, and S.uric acid concentrations and OA while there is no relationship between S.albumin concentration and OA disease.

Abstract

There are two main types of cathodic protection systems: galvanic and impressed current. In this research, the effect of coatings on impressed current cathodic protection was studied. The selection of coating process for a specific application depends on several factors including the corrosion resistance that are required, the anticipated lifetime of the coated material and environmental considerations. When using cathodic protection on coated pipelines, the problems that exist if the coating disbands (loses adhesion) must be considered. Many in the oil steel pipeline industry assume cathodic protection will solve their external corrosion problems without truly understanding the relationship between the epoxy-coating and cathodic protection. Most external corrosion on oil steel pipelines is caused by disbanded epoxy-coating that shield cathodic protection. This paper will discuss the differences in cathodic protection of oil steel pipeline that coating and not coating and how cathodic protection works with these coatings (wear used epoxy (G-5470), (G-5471) and (G-5472), three types component epoxy system resistance to acid and chemical from modern paints industrials Company (in Iraq)). The aqueous corrosion properties of the coated samples in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution were studied by Tafel extrapolation measurements.

يوجد نوعين رئيسيين من أنظمة الحماية الكاثودية : الحماية الكاثودية بالعنصر المضحي والثانية هي الحماية الكاثودية بالتيار المسلط . في هذا البحث يتم دراسة تأثير الطلاء على الحماية الكاثودية باستخدام التيار المسلط على الأنابيب الفولاذية الناقلة للنفط . أن اختيار عملية طلاء في اغلب التطبيقات يعتمد على عدة عوامل ، بما في ذلك مقاومة المعدن للتآكل، ومقدار عمر الطلاء للمعدن المراد حمايته والظروف البيئية المحيطة بالمعدن المراد حمايته .ان استخدام الحماية الكاثودية على خطوط الأنابيب الفولاذية المطلية ، يجب أن يؤخذ بنظر الاعتبار المشاكل القائمة فيما إذا كان الطلاء متمزق او غير متلاصق ,ومعظم التآكل الخارجي لخطوط الأنابيب الفولاذية المطلية والناقلة للنفط هو يحدث بسبب فشل في الطلاء الخارجي للأنابيب الفولاذية المطلية ويودي في النهاية إلى حدوث فشل كإرثي للأنابيب.وأكثر البحوث المستخدمة في الصناعة تفترض بأن الحماية الكاثودية على خطوط الأنابيب الفولاذية تحل مشاكل التآكل الخارجي للأنابيب الفولاذية بدون محاولة لفهم العلاقة بين الطلاء والحماية الكاثودية نفسها.وسيناقش هذه البحث دراسة الاختلافات في حماية الأنابيب الفولاذية الناقلة للنفط والتي تكون مطلية وأخرى عارية ودراسة هذه الطلاءات (الطلاءات المستخدمة (G-5470) و (G-5471) و(G-5472) من النوع المركب والمقاوم للتفاعلات الكيميائية والحوامض, حيث أخذت من شركة الأصباغ الحديثة العراقية) وتأثيرها على الحماية الكاثودية , وتم العمل بمحلول(3.5 wt % NaCl) ودراسة سلوك التآكل باستخدام طريقة استكمال منحني تافل.
