Abstract

Background and Objectives: Dental health education is a planned package of information, learning activities or experiences that are intended to promote dental health. The current study was conducted to evaluate the impact of dental educational program on cleanliness and gingival health in primary dentition of nursery school children aging (3-6) years in Erbil city. Methods: Oral examination was performed on (148) children of (Balla) nursery school in Erbil city. They were divided into two equal groups, each consisting of (74) children. The first group, an experimental group, received dental health education instructions for 8 weeks before clinically examining the children (the dentist with cooperation from their teachers) twice a week. The second group, control group, whose members examined clinically without any dental educational program. Index used was CPITN.Results: Clinical examination showed that CPITN of group (1) was lower with a healthier gingiva with less plaque accumulation when compared with group (2) with statistical significant differences (P-value <0.005).Conclusion: Dental health education program is an essential activity for promoting optimal oral health and preventing oral diseases. The program displayed positive influence on gingival and oral health behaviors of nursery school children.

Abstract

Aims: To evaluate the oral health status (dental caries, periodontal disease and treatment needs) in Yemenis adult individuals. Material and Methods: The sample included 471 individuals, age rangingbetween 20–59 years of both sexes using sharp dental caries explorers with WHO periodontal probes to detect periodontal health by the use of DMFT index of WHO (1997) and CPITN by WHO (1987).Results: The mean DMFT for the total sample was 7.33 + 0.3 which was increased with increasing agefor the different age groups with a significant difference but no significant difference in the meanDMFT for total males and females has been found. The results also showed that the total number ofteeth (880) with a mean of 1.81 tooth/person in need of treatment is the most prevalent needed onesurface filling, and 581 teeth with a mean of 1.23 tooth/ person needed two or more surfaces filling.According to the highest CPITN there was significant difference between male and female in calculusat p < 0.05 and shallow pockets at p < 0.01. The results also revealed that the mean number of healthysextants for the total sample was 4.13 while for bleeding and calculus were 1.02 and 0.21, respectively. It means that the treatment needs for periodontal disease is more toward oral hygiene procedure and prophylaxis. Conclusion: Dental health education program is an essential activity for promoting optimal oral health and preventing oral diseases

Abstract

Partial recording of indices of periodontitis have long been used in clinical andepidemiological studies to predict full-mouth situation. The two most widely usedpartial recording indices for periodontal surveys are the community periodontal indexof treatment needs (CPITN) and the Ramfjord teeth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of Ramfjord teeth inpredicting the full-mouth periodontal status of an adult population in patient attendingthe collage of dentistry- Baghdad University. The study participants were 240 patients we divide them into three main groupsaccording to the age of the patients and each group were divided in to two sub groupsaccording to the sex of the patients. Pocket depth was measured in millimeters withperiodontal probeThe difference in the mean pocket depth measured from the full mouth(F) andRamfjord teeth(R) by using paired t - test was non significant in all the groups. Alsoin all groups the correlation coefficient as well as beta coefficient was highThe high agreement between Ramfjord teeth and full mouth periodontal pocketdepth confirm the epidemiological validity of Ramfjord teeth to represent the full mouth.

Abstract

Background: Changes in thyroid function have significant health consequences onhuman beings. Women's risk of developing thyroid problems is seven times thatof men. The associations between periodontal diseases and thyroid dysfunctionhad received great attention in periodontal literature in last few decades. In theonly few studies that conducted in Iraq, the concentration was primarily directedtoward oral health status and dental treatment needs while the periodontaltreatment needs have been omitted. This omission is definitely due to absence ofimplementation of CPITN in these studies.Aim of the study: to estimate the periodontal health status and periodontal treatmentneed among Iraqi females with thyroid dysfunction.Material and methods: sample of this study consist of 225 adult Iraqi femalesallocated into three comparable groups. Group A (patients with hypothyroidism),Group B (patients with hyperthyroidism) and Group C (control group). CPITN,CAL & TN indices were recorded and the data were analyzed statistically usingSPSS program. Results: generally, healthy women found to have better periodontal health and lessclinical attachment loss compared to those with thyroid dysfunction but theseresults was not significant for all CPITN scores. On the other hand all populationsample were found to need periodontal treatment in different levels. Conclusion: Thyroid dysfunction in its both types (hypothyroidism &hyperthyroidism) has its impact on periodontal health status, but this impact stillin need of more extensive researches to expand our knowledge about this vitalsubject.

Periodontal treatment needs among dental and non dental Iraqi students (A comparative study)

Abstract

The direct relation between periodontal disease and the oral hygiene level on one hand and the level of education on the other hand were repeatedly proved throughout a large number of epidemiologic periodontal studies. Based on this fact, one can conclude that the periodontal treatment need among highly educated individuals (as university students) seems to be less than that of individuals with low educational level, but a question that may arise in this area is: Does the treatment need among dental students differ from that of their colleagues in other studies or not? The present research aimed at providing an answer for this question. Three hundreds university students (150 dental &150 non dental) were examined by using CPITN and the data were analyzed statistically. Results indicated that in general the periodontal treatment need was comparable between dental and non dental students in this social class. Results also indicated that programs aimed at improvement of oral hygiene of this social class may be applicable in our community, the matter that calls for full cooperation from the health authorities to carry out a national campaign directed toward this social class.

Abstract

This study was part of a field work carried out by the University of Mosul inHumaidat village, which is located about 25km North West of Mosul on the river Tigris .The size of the sample was 310 individuals, 138 males and 172 females, their agesranging between 6-57 years. The aim of the study was to determine the trends of dentalcaries and periodontal disease and compare the results with a previous study canied outin the same village .Clinical examination was carried out inthe village school using a portable dentalchair and adequate light. Diagnosis of dental caries and assessment of dental treatmentneeds was performed according to WHO *1997 guidelines, while the gingival health statusand periodontal treatment needs of the individuals was performed using the CommunityPeriodontal Index Treatment Needs (CPITN) as recommended by WHO 1987 ,Results showed that mean DMFT value for the sample was 5.81 with astatistically significant age difference, although females tended to have higher means thanmales, there was no significant differences between them, mean DMFT values weremuch less than a previous study in the same area, the dental treatment needs showed thatone surface filling was needed as the highest mean for the total sample , followed by 2 ormore surface fillings , extraction and finally pulp care .The periodontal condition of the individuals was very bad, with the disease beingprevalent in 99.7% ofthe population, which is much more than the previous study, morethan three quarter of the sample had calculus as the highest CPITN score, in addition tothe presence of a large percentage of individuals having pockets .The periodontal treatment needs were massive with only 0.3% needing notreatment, health education was required at a range of,% )077-50.79( scaling was needed in 87.7% of the total sample and finally complextreatment needed in 3.88 % of the sample. The village is in need of intensive healtheducational programmes which may be carried out in the health center of the area or inschool settings in order to increase the knowledge about dental disease, helping theindividuals adopt positive attitude towards dental health care .
