Abstract

Background and Objectives: Dental health education is a planned package of information, learning activities or experiences that are intended to promote dental health. The current study was conducted to evaluate the impact of dental educational program on cleanliness and gingival health in primary dentition of nursery school children aging (3-6) years in Erbil city. Methods: Oral examination was performed on (148) children of (Balla) nursery school in Erbil city. They were divided into two equal groups, each consisting of (74) children. The first group, an experimental group, received dental health education instructions for 8 weeks before clinically examining the children (the dentist with cooperation from their teachers) twice a week. The second group, control group, whose members examined clinically without any dental educational program. Index used was CPITN.Results: Clinical examination showed that CPITN of group (1) was lower with a healthier gingiva with less plaque accumulation when compared with group (2) with statistical significant differences (P-value <0.005).Conclusion: Dental health education program is an essential activity for promoting optimal oral health and preventing oral diseases. The program displayed positive influence on gingival and oral health behaviors of nursery school children.

Abstract

Background: A diverse group of bacteria live in biofilms in the oral cavity. On dental surfaces biofilms form plaque that is potentially involved in caries and periodontal diseases. Periodic studying of plaque microflora and their antimicrobial sensitivity patterns strongly affects the clinical practice in plaque-induced oral diseases.Materials and methods: Dental plaque samples were collected from 22 patients having ages ranged between 33 and 49 years with gingivitis that met the study criteria. Plaque, gingival and gingival bleeding indices (PI, GI, GBI) were measured for each patient. Laboratory procedures included microbiological examination of plaque samples followed by antibiotic sensitivity testing using disc diffusion method were also proceeded. Results: All patients were categorized as moderate gingivitis (GI: 1.1-2.0), the recorded PI were 1.2-2.7. Bleeding was observed in all subjects. Gingivitis was significantly higher in males (P=0.021). A total of 121 bacterial species were isolated from plaque samples, Facultative anaerobes constitute 83%. The most frequently isolated bacteria were α-hemolytic streptococci (36.36%) and Enterococcus faecalis (14.87%) among facultative, and Fusobacterium sp., Actinomyces sp., Veillonella sp. among obligate anaerobes (3.31%, 2.48%, 2.48%, respectively). Imipenem (77.2%) and Ciprofloxacin (59.4%) were the most effective agents against both bacterial groups. Multi-drug resistance (MDR) was recorded in most of the isolates (> 90%). A very highly significant relation between MDR with each of the above clinical criteria was recorded (P-value= 0.000).Conclusions: The high level of MDR isolates is of great clinical concern and requires an urgent reassessment of the policies of antibiotic prescription in dental settings

Abstract

Fixed orthodontic appliances consider as a host for dental plaque accumulations which lead to subsequent gingivitis.O’Leary plaque index and gingival index by Löe and Silness of 60 repeated observations (before and after first stage of orthodontic treatment) which taken from 30 patients (13 male & 17 female) with age range (17-30) years old. According to ANOVA, there was highly significant difference in plaque index before and after treatment in both males (p value=0.00) and females (p value=0.00), but there was no gender difference in plaque index before and after treatment. The present study showed that there was highly significance difference in the gingival index before and after treatment in both males (p value=0.00) and females (p value=0.00).Plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation obviously increased in orthodontic patients, so good oral hygiene program must be followed during orthodontic treatment in order to overcome these side effects.

Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the action of 0.2% sodium fluoride (900 ppmF), and 0.2% chlorhexidinegluconatemouthrinses besides tooth brushing on plaque and gingival indices. To achieve this aim 45 patients undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy were divided into 3 equal groups randomly which were on tooth brushing only, tooth brushing with 0.2% sodium fluoride and tooth brushing with 0.2% chlorhexidinemouthrinses. The second group rinse with 10 ml of sodium fluoride once weekly for 8 weeks, while the third group rinse with 10 mi of chlorhexidine twice daily for the same period, the plaque and gingival indices were scored at base-line and then evaluated after 4 and 8 weeks. The present study revealed that the mean plaque index was significantly reduce (p<0.05) for the chlorhexidine and sodium fluoride patients in comparison with the first group throughout period of study. A similar trend was noted with gingival index as the lower values were recorded to the chlorhexidine groups, moreover, analysis of variance showed significant differences among groups and the chlorhexidine means were the mostly affected one. These results indicate that sodium fluoride could be use also for plaque and gingivitis control in addition to its anticariogenic action for patient undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Degradation of oral health is often assumed to progress with aging. However, significantly higher total counts and greater varieties of Candida species can be detected in wearers of removable dentures compared with nondenture wearers.Poorly fitting or unhygienic dentures leads to the presence of yeast like fungi (Candidaalbicans ) attached to it, and cause inflammation. Although candidiasis is highly resistant to antifungal agents, systemic drugs usage are necessary. But the systemic use of these drugs can cause side effects like liver toxicity, drug interactions etc.Usingpropolseasantifungal by localapplication, found that it suppresses the Candida associated dry socket and denture stomatitis. The Propolispast was used in the following manner. It was applied to the fitting surface of denture, twice a day for 2 weeks. The Propolisputty was putted in dry socket after complete removal of inflammatory tissuesfrom it.The results showed pain, redness area and inflammation related stomatitis were disappear gradually after 48 hours until 2 weeks that the denture stomatitis is healing by using a Propolispast.Propolisputty treat the fungal inflammation of dry socket that gradual decreases of the pain and inflammation. After the treatment, all patientswith denture stomatitis were subjected to examination of the palatal mucosa and socket and quantitative culture of Candida from the palatal mucosa and denture fitting surface and diagnosed by three method :Germ tube.GramStain.andChromAgar media

Germ Germ tube . Gram stain and Chromo agar media
