Abstract

Aim: To evaluate some natural products (soda+ vinegar, soda + thymol , saturated salt solution) compared with the commercial denture cleanser (Protifex), for disinfection of acrylic denture base material from C. albicans (in vitro ). Materials And Methods: Thirty five samples, (10 x 10 x 2 mm length, width, and thickness respectively), were prepared from heat cured acrylic resin denture base material (Major heat cured acrylic resin ), using MacFarland Standard Bacteriologica Solution technique, tube No.2., using a light microscope with camera connected to computer for testing anti fungal efficiency of these natural denture cleansers (soda, vinegar, thymol, saturated salt solution). This procedure was done after 1hour, 4hours, and 8 hours of immersion. in comparison with samples immersed in distilled water, (Control). Results: The results demonstrated that at P=0.05 there were significant differences between all prepared solutions and control. The best prepared natural solution was saturated salt solution. There were significant differences between all times of immersion, the best was 8hrs. Conclusions: All the prepared natural denture cleansers were considered as fungicidal disinfectants, and a proper disinfection of the acrylic denture base material requires 8hrs of immersion in the prepared disinfectant solutions. Abstract

Aims: To evaluate the effect of three different cleanser on the color stability of three different types of artificial teeth. Materials and methods: sixty samples of artificial anterior teeth were prepared which are Acry-Rock, RMH teeth and Porcelain teeth and immersed in three types of denture cleanser(Bony plus, Protefix and soda+ vinegar) for 8 hours and the color of the teeth was measured by Easyshade's spectrophotometer at 3 intervals(1,2and4weeks). Results: Showed that the a'b values of ceramic teeth and L value of RHM teeth were significantly differencent after 2 week of immersion in three type of denture cleanser. Analysis of variance demonstrated that L'a'b value for ceramic teeth and RHN teeth were statistically significant after 4 week immersion in three type of denture cleanser, The result of color change (ΔE) for three denture cleansers of three periods of immersion were clinically accepted. Conclusion: Long period of immersion of artificial teeth in denture cleanser cause significant color change for L*a*b* values but they were clinically accepted.

Abstract

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the natural denture cleanser saturated salt solution on disinfection of C. albicans for the maxillary complete denture (An in vivo study). Mate-rials and Methods: An in vivo study testing anti fungal efficiency of the natural denture cleanser satu-rated salt solution on disinfection of C. albicans for 60 patient wearing maxillary complete denture by using light microscope with camera and connected to computer. The swab was taken from the fitting surface of the denture of about 2.5 cm following the median line starting from incisive papilla. This study compared the effect of disinfection between before and after immersion in distilled water (Con-trol), saturated salt solution (Iraq), and protefix(Germany). Results: The results demonstrated that there were significant differences between salt solution and distilled water, that there were no signifi-cant differences between salt solution and protefix at p=0.05. Conclusions: saturated salt solution was very efficient for disinfection of C. albicans for acrylic denture base material.

Abstract

To evaluate the effect of two prepared and commercial solution on surface roughness and tensile strength of highly impact acrylic denture base material. Materials and Methods: The total number of specimens were one hundred and fifty. They were prepared from highly impact acrylic and subdivided into five groups for each solution (EDTA, Soda+HR2ROR2R, Lacalut, Corega and distilled water). Two la-boratory tests were used for this research. Surface Roughness and tensile strength test. The surface roughness test specimens were constructed with dimensions (10×10×2±0.03mm) (length, width, and thickness respectively). According to ADA specification no.12 the tensile test specimens were con-structed with dimensions 90×10×3±0.03mm (length, width, and thickness respectively). The immersion periods in this research are (2day, 7 day and one month). ANOVA and Duncan multiple range test were used. The statistical results were considered significant at p ≤ 0.05. Results: the results showed that (soda+HR2ROR2R) has no significant change on the surface roughness and tensile strength of highly impact acrylic denture base material in (2day, 7 day, and 1month). Conclusion: (soda+HR2ROR2R) has the lowest effect on the surface roughness and tensile strength of highly impact acrylic denture base material in (2day, 7 day, and 1month

Abstract

Background: Thermoplastic non –metal clasp denture became recently the most attractive option for patients dueto its esthetic outcome and many other advantages. The chemical immersed denture cleanser is the most widelyused method by the patients to maintain clean and healthy denture , but the use of such cleanser may haveharmful effect on the denture base materials .This study aimed to evaluate some physical and mechanicalproperties of one of the thermoplastic denture base materials which is (nylon) compared with those belong toconventional heat cured acrylic and to observe the effect of two prepared denture cleansers ( 4% oxalic acid ,4%tartaric acid ) in addition to one commercial denture cleanser (lacalut dent) on the indentation hardness , flexuralstrength , flexibility , surface roughness and color stability of nylon and conventional heat cured acrylic.Materials and method: Two hundred and sixty specimens (130 nylon and 130 acrylic) were prepared ,60 specimens(30 nylon ,30 acrylic ) were used to test each of the properties mentioned above except an 80 specimens were used(40 nylon ,40 acrylic ) to test flexural strength and flexibility.Results: The result obtained in the present study showed high significant difference between nylon and conventionalheat cured acrylic in four properties which were: indentation hardness , flexural strength , flexibility and color stability,with no difference in the surface roughness .Furthermore oxalic acid and tartaric acid cleansers significantlydecrease the indentation hardness and flexural strength of conventional heat cured acrylic while lacalut dent didn’tsignificantly affect those properties of acrylic, also all the three cleansers didn’t affect the indentation hardness andflexural strength of nylon .oxalic acid and tartaric acid cleansers significantly decreased the flexibility of nylon whilelacalut dent didn’t significantly changed this property. All the three cleanser had no effect on the flexibility ofacrylic. All the three cleanser had no effect on the surface roughness or color stability of nylon and acrylic.Conclusions: It can be concluded that nylon had better flexibility and translucency than conventional heat curedacrylic while conventional heat cured acrylic had better indentation hardness and flexural strength than nylon.Regarding surface roughness the two polymers show no significant difference between them.There were an adverse effect of the prepared denture cleansers which contain isopropyl alcohol on indentationhardness and flexural strength of conventional heat cured acrylic , it decreased both those properties , so it isadvised not to use solution containing alcohol as acrylic denture cleanser also it is advised not to use it withnylon denture because it decreased its flexibility. Lacalut dent which is an oxygenating commercial denturecleanser, had no adverse effects on both polymers used in the study, so it can be used safely with them

Abstract

Three newly prepared denture cleaner solutions from materials available in our country [namely; oxalic, citric and tartaric acids dissolved in isopropyl alcohol (5% w/v)] were studied for their effect on 110 specimens of heat cure acrylic resin prepared according to ADA Specification for 7 days, 1 month, 6 months, and 12 months, compared with Steradent denture cleaner by two techniques (immersion and brushing techniques). The concentration (5% w/v) was selected according to the results of pilot study. The results of this study showed that oxalic and tartaric acids have nearly the same effect on surface roughness in relation to Steradent by immersion technique for six months, but this result was increased to show high rough surface of samples treated by citric acid for one year. Treatment with the four solutions led to reduction in weight (0.03 mg) except citric acid (0.49 mg). Statistical analysis was performed using F–test two–sample. The results revealed that there was a significant difference at levels 1% and 5% between the brushing and immersion techniques, roughness of the surfaces, and period of using each solution Changes in weight in relation to surface area were ranged between 0.01– 0.03 mg/cm2 for Steradent and oxalic acid in immersion technique, while the result was 0.05–0.23 mg/cm2 for brushing technique of the other solutions except citric acid. Oxalic acid showed complete removing of the stain within 8–10 minutes, Steradent and tartaric acid need 6–8 hours, while citric acid did not show the same result.

Abstract

Back ground: The polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer is the most popular dental resin for denture base in dentistry since many years. Rough surface are likely to occur unavoidably during the construction of a dental appliance. An acrylic denture base may exhibit minor surface roughness which needs to be removed before the denture to be polished, this roughness if not removed it will effects the mechanical properties of denture base and render it more dental plaque and satin retainer eventually less hygienic. Aims of the study: In present study we examined the effect of denture cleanser on the surface roughness of heat-cure polymerized acrylic denture base resin.Material and method: (50) specimens of pink heat-cure acrylic resin were prepared with dimensions of (65 mm x10 mm x 3 mm) length, width and depth respectively according to ADA specifications 1975. The specimens were divided into (2) groups: control group consist of (25) specimens socked in distilled water and experimental group consist of (25) specimens socked in denture cleanser (protefix active ) about 15 minutes for (14) days.The surface roughness measured by (Talysurf 4). Results: The results showed a significant differences at (P < 0.05), as compared with control group. Conclusion: it can be concluded that the surface roughness of acrylic denture base increased with the frequent used of denture cleansers.

يعتبر الاكريلك الراتنجي من المواد الاكثر استخداما في صناعة الأسنان للعديد من السنين. وخشونة سطح الاكريلك من المحتمل أن تحدث حتما خلال بناء الأجهزة في صناعة اطقام الاسنان فقبل التلميع النهائي يجب ان تزال هذه الخشونة من السطح الاكريلكي لانها ان بقيت سوف تؤثر سلبا على الخصائص الميكانيكية والصحية لقاعدة الطقم الاكريليكي المعالج حراريا. درست (50) عينة من الاكريليك المتصلب حراريا مع الأبعاد (65 ملم 10x ملم × 3 ملم) الطول والعرض والعمق على التوالي وقسمت الى مجموعتان .مجموعة البحث تتكون (25 ) عينة غمرت بالمنظف الخاص بالطقم وهو(protefix active ) ولمدة ربع ساعة باليوم ولفترة اسبوعين. ومجموعةالسيطرة تتكون من (25) عينة غمرت بالماءالمقطر وبنفس الفترة.فحصت خشونة السطح باستخدام جهاز الأختبار(Talysurf 4) . وأظهرت النتائج ان الاكريلك المعالج حراريا والمنظف باستخدام (protefix active ) قد زاد من خشونة السطح (P < 0.05) اكثر من مجموعة السيطرة التي وضعت فقط بالماء المقطر. ويمكن الاستنتاج بان كثرة استخدام هذه المنظفات يؤثر سلبيا على خشونة السطح الاكريليكي لقاعدة طقم الاسنان.

Abstract

The study aims to evaluate the effect of some commercially available natural products (soda+ vinegar, soda +thymol , saturated salt solution) in relation to the commercial denture cleansers (Protifex) ,on surface roughness and hardness dimensional accuracy of acrylic denture base materials. one hundred samples were prepared from heat activated acrylic resin denture base material, they are (1cm*1cm*2mm length, width and thickness respectively). After that, half of the samples for each group were immersed for ½ hr per day in the denture cleanser, the other half of the samples immersed for 8 hr per day in the denture cleanser through one month. The denture cleansers used are three solutions prepared freshly everyday for immersion of the samples. The surface roughness of the samples were tested by using Stylus profilometer(Talysurf 10, England), while the hardness of the samples were tested by using Rockwell hardness tester (Wolpert, Germany), the mean is taken for each group and evaluated by using one way analysis of variance test, Dunnet T-test to compare the groups. The results demonstrated that there were no significant differences in the surface roughness and hardness, but with significant difference between treats of length of acrylic resin denture base material and duration of immersion at (P=0.05). All the prepared natural solutions would be accepted in relation to effect on surface roughness , dimensional accuracy, and hardness of acrylic denture base material.

Abstract

The dirty denture may have undesirable effect on patient's health and ability to successful wear of the denture, if a patient's denture becomes unsanitary, the consequences may be bad breath, poor esthetic, denture stomatitis and angular cheilitis and the using of the denture cleanser is the solution for this problem but the prolong use of such cleansers may affect the properties of the denture. The aim of the study is to observe the effect of denture cleansers on color stability, water sorption and water solubility of the light cured acrylic resin after their immersion in tea solution.Light curing acrylic resin was prepared and immersed in four types of denture cleansers after there staining with tea then color stability, water sorption and water solubility of acrylic resin was measured.There were no changes in the stained acrylic properties when the samples were immersed in prepared denture cleansers and in the alkaline peroxide cleanser compared to that immersed in the distilled water in respect to color stability, sorption and solubility of the testing groups.The water sorption, water solubility and color stability of the light cured acrylic resin where immersed in the prepared denture cleanser solutions are in accordance with the American dental association no.12. The denture cleanser are good and satisfactory cleanser materials for the acrylic resin denture base and it’s recommended for cleansing the prostheses which are cured by light curing method.
