Effectiveness of Teaching Methods in College’s Education of Hawler Medical University

Abstract

Aims: To assess of student's opinion regarding effectiveness teaching methods in different BS colleges (medical, pharmacy , Dentistry and nursing ) Hawler medical university in Erbil city . Methodology : comparative study design was use to investigate the effectiveness of different teaching method for undergraduate student's , in different BC colleges , data was collected by using questionnaire format and filled out by the investigators , direct interview techniques were used with the student's , the study carried out during the period from may 15th to June 15th 2011, data were analyzed using the statistical package for social science (SPSS, Version 17).Results : Show that the majority of age of the colleges student's in Hawler medical university were 23years old which present ( 35.9%) ,also the study shows that( 32.60%) were from nursing college and (94%) of student can ask if they need any clarification .There is significant relationship between student's Hawler medical university student's opinion and effectiveness teaching methods at P ≤0.05.Recommendation: Evaluate teaching effectiveness different methods can be used including, peer review , self -evaluation.

الهدف: تقيم الطالب ا ساليب المختلفه في التدريس في الجامعه هولير الطبيه وفي الكليات المختلفه لمرحله البكالوريوس في الطب الصيدله ، طب الاسنان ، التمريض .المنهجيه : دراسه المقارنه الطرق المختلفة في التدريس للطلبه الدراسات الاوليه في الجامعه هولير الطبيه . في مدينه اربيل ،تم تصميم استماره استبانه لغرض الدراسه وتم ملى الاستماره بطريقه المقابله للفتره مابين 15مارس ولغاية 15 حزيران 2011 وتم استخدام الوسائل الاحصائية بطريقة SPSS .النتائج: يبين من الدراسه بان معظم طلبة اعمارهم 23 سنه بنسبه( 9و35%) وبين من الدراسه ايضا بان (60و32%) من طلبه كلية لتمريض و(94%) من الطلبه بلستطاعتهم توجيه الاسئله في حاله ليدهم صعوبه في فهم الماده وكذلك هناك العلاقه بين فكره طلبه هوليرالطبيه وطرق التدريس المختلفه احتماليه ≤ .5و. .التوصيات: تقويم الطرق المختلفه في التدريس بواسطه تقويم الجماعي وتقويم الذات للطلبه.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Knowledge transfer and exchange is a dynamic and complex process which comprises the creation of knowledge and its application to improve health, provide more effective health services and products, and will strengthen the overall healthcare system. This study aimed to understand the current context of knowledge transfer and exchange and identify the main barriers and facilitators for enhancing that from the perspective of university academics.Methods: This cross-sectional survey was carried out between February to September 2015 on 160 academic researchers of the four colleges of Hawler Medical University; Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing. A self-administered questionnaire was used for this purpose. Likert scale was used to rate participants answers and SPSS for assessing the level of association between different variables.Results: The study revealed that the mean ± standard deviation time academic researchers used for conducting different activities of knowledge transfer and exchange was 9.39 ± 14.08 and that around 43% of the participants stated that they use less than 5% of their time for knowledge transfer and exchange activities. There was no significant statistical association between knowledge transfer and exchange percentage time used by academic researchers from one side and research areas and different colleges from another side.Conclusion: There is an obvious shortfall from the side of academic researchers in transferring or exchanging the knowledge they acquire from their health research to their target audience. There is a lack of investment from the side of academic researchers in health policy and system research.

Abstract

Background and objective: quality assurance is the planned and systematic review of an institution to determine whether or not acceptable standards of education and infrastructure are being met, maintained and enhanced. This study intended to explore the perspectives of teaching staff about quality assurance process with the aim of uncovering commonalities and discrepancies among staff from the different educational background.Methods: This explorative study was conducted in Erbil governorate, Iraq. Data were collected using Q methodology, a technique for eliciting subjective views and identifying shared patterns among individuals. A sample of 40 teaching staff in Hawler Medical University from the different educational background and academic titles were invited to sort a set of 42 statements reflecting various aspects of the quality assurance process into a distribution on a scale of nine from "disagree most" to "agree most." By-person factor analysis was used to derive latent views through centroid factor extraction and varimax rotation of factors.Results: Analysis of the participants’ Q sorts resulted in identifying four distinct views and experiences of quality assurance process: (i) Accepting the current quality assurance process with constructive criticism, (ii) Actively opposing the quality assurance process, (iii) General satisfaction with quality assurance process and (iv) Students’ feedback concern. The typical characterizations that were associated with each view were highlighted.Conclusions: This study revealed different patterns of views and experiences of teaching staff about quality assurance process and recognized the particular issues related to each pattern.

Abstract

Background and objective: Moderate and Heavy/binge alcohol drinking among medical college students have become a major public health problem. There is consistent evidence suggesting that young adults in college are drinking more than their non–college-attending peers, but it is still not clear whether they are more likely to suffer from clinically significant alcohol use disorders. This article reports the first national assessment of patterns of drinking habitamong Medical Colleges. The aim of this study was to monitor the use of alcohol and to search for intervention and prevention strategies in Medical college communities.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Young adults students (n = 342) in four Medical College in Hawler Medical University were studied from the period between 20th Feb 2007-20th April 2007 regarding use of alcohol, they were between 17-29 years old, 36% female, 64% male. A semi structured Questionnaires were distributed to students living in the four Medical colleges. The questionnaires asked for information on age, residency (how long they had lived in the college) and what substances they had used in the 6 months prior to the study (cigarettes, alcohol). The students also asked about academic and social activities. The data were expressed as descriptive frequencies and percentages. Results: 19.3% of college students (18, 4% of men, 0.9% of women) has occasional alcoholdrink in the in the past 6 month, 4.4% has moderate to binge drinking which was completely among male students, students from College of Medicine form the higher rate of alcohol users (12.8%), while College of Nursing form the lowest rate (0.6%). Bars and restaurant form the major drinking context for the students (44.5%)Conclusions: The problem of alcohol use is increasing among students from medical college/ Hawler University. College-based interventions seem desirable, especially in boys.

Abstract

Aims: Present study aims to assess the social phobia among nursing students at Hawler Medical University in Erbil City. Methods: Quantitative, Descriptive study was conducted on nursing students in the college of Nursing at Hawler Medical University in Erbil City in the Kurdistan Region of Iraqfrom 5th May to 4th August 2015. A non-probability (purposive sample) was used for selection of 296 students. Questionnaire was designed and divided into two parts; socio-demographic characteristics of nursing students, and social phobia items which included Inventory scale questions that include 17 items with 5 responds. The data were analyzed through the SPSS software V.22 application, descriptive data analysis was done through measuring of frequency and percentage of social phobia score using Social Phobia Inventory Scale. Inferential data analysis was done by Chi-square and ANOVA tests.Results: The results shows that most of the study sample was between 17-22 years old, female, single, and faire economic status from rural area (59.8%). Most of the students had social phobia. There was significant difference between students’ academic years regarding severity of social phobia.Conclusions: The study concluded that more than half of the study sample had social phobia and there are a highly significant relationship between academic years and social phobia among the nursing students.Recommendations: The study recommends educational programs for all nursing students regarding social phobiaand how to cope with such situations in Hawler Medical University.

الهدف: تهدف الدراسة الحالية الى تَقييم مستوى الرهاب الاجتماعي لدى طلبة كلية التمريض في جامعة هولير الطبيّة في مدينة أربيل.المنهجية: أجريت دراسة وصفيّة في كليّة التمريض بجامعة هولير الطبيّة في مدينة أربيل/أقليم كوردستان العراق من شهر أيار 2015 الى شهر اب 2015.وقد تم اختيارعينة غير إحتمالية "هادفة-غرضيّة" متكونة من 296 طالب. تم إعداد الإستمارة الإستبيانية المتكونة من جزأين: الجزء الأول يشمل المعلومات الديموغرافية والإجتماعية للطلاب، والجزء الثاني يحتوي على مجموعة من الأسئلة حول تقييم مستوى الرهاب الأجتماعي والمتكون من 17 سؤال لخمسة إختيارات للإجابة من الأجوبة .وتم تحليل النتائج باستخدام البرنامج الاحصائي (SPSS V.22) كوسيلة إحصائية لتحليل البيانات وتم استعمال الاحصاء الوصفي من خلال تقيم التكرارات والنسب المئوية للرهاب الاجتماعي بواسطة مقياس جرد الرهاب الاجتماعي. والاحصاء الاستدلالي الذي شمل اختبارمربع كاي و معامل الإختلافANOVA.النتائج: بيّنَت نتائج الدراسة بأن عُمر غالبية الطلاب مابين 17- 22سنة و معظمهم كانوا من الإناث، غير متزوجين ، ومتوسطي الحالة الاقتصادية، وهم من سكنة المناطق الريفية (59.8%)وإن غالبية الطلاب عندهم الرهاب الإجتماعي. كان هناك فرق كبير بين سنوات الأكاديمية للطلبة بخصوص شدة الرهاب الاجتماعي.الإستنتاج: استنتجت الدراسة بأن أكثر من نصف عدد طلاب كلية التمريض لديهم الرهاب الاجتماعي وهناك علاقة ذات دلالة إحصائية عالية بين المرحلة الأكاديمية ومستوى الرهاب الاجتماعي.التوصيات: أوصت الدراسة بأعداد برنامج تعليمي عن الرهاب الاجتماعي والتكيف معه لدى الطلبة التمريضيين في جامعة هولير الطبيّة في مدينة أربيل.
