Abstract

Background: It is well known that the low level laser irradiation has act on immune system cells in a number of ways, one of them includes increasing phagocytic activity of irradiated cells. This study was established to shed light on the possible effect of laser irradiation on phagocytic activity of polymorphoneutrophils. Subjects and methods: Fresh blood samples were obtained from twenty healthy volunteers for phagocytosis assay. The polymorphoneutrophils were isolated from blood and examined their phagocytic capacity befor and after exposure to laser irradiation.
Results: The present study revealed a significant increase in the mean percentage of phagocytosis after exposure to diode laser of wave length (632) nm (red), which was further increased by increasing the time of exposure. Conclusion: The current study suggests that low level of laser can increase the phagocytic activity of polymorphoneutrophils, and this increase propotional to increaseing the time of exposure.

Abstract

The present study was done to determine and evaluate the effect of X-ray irradiation on the testicular tissue of rabbits those were exposed for a long time. Ten male rabbits, 8-9 months old and their weight approximately two kg. Rabbits were exposed to X-ray irradiation for two months/ twice daily. Blood parameters and testosterone hormone were measured within 20th, 40th, and 60th days after exposure. Orchictomy were done by surgical methods after 60th days for histopathological examination. The results revealed highly changes in testis such as atrophy, hyper atrophy, blood vessel congestion and suppression of spermatogenesis, blood parameter also changed and testosterone levels reach to zero at 60th days after exposure. In concluding that the persistence of X-ray exposure caused deterioration and passive effects on testicular tissue and other organs of rabbits.

Abstract

In this research, the study effect irradiation on structural and optical properties of film (PVA: CuO) bycastingmethod, with thickness of( 20±1) µm. And used Cs137to obtained Gamma ray with energy(662)KeV and time irradiation(50)h and affectivity (4.3)ci.The investigation of (XRD) indicates that the (PVA: CuO) films are polycrystalline. The results of the measuring the grain size increasing after irradiation with gamma ray from (6.424-9.091)nm. The absorbance and transmittance spectra have been recorded in the wavelength range (300-1100) nm.Results show that theoptical band gap for (PVA: CuO) increasing after irradiation with gamma ray from (2.3-2.7)eV. Andthe absorption coefficient,extinction coefficient, refraction index, the finesse coefficient andthe optical conductivity are increase after irradiated with gamma ray .

في هذه البحث تم دراسة تاثير التشعيع على الخواص التركيبية والبصرية لاغشية بوليمر فينال الكحول المشوبة باوكسيد النحاس والمحضرة بطريقة الصب وبسمك ( 20±1) µm,وقد استخدم المصدر المشع Cs137 ذو طاقة 663KeV للحصول على اشعة كاما وكان زمن التشعيع (50) ساعة وبفعالية ( 4.3)ci .وباستخدام تقنية حيود الاشعة السينية وجد ان اغشية بوليمر فينال الكحول المشوبة باوكسيد النحاس ذات تركيب متعدد التبلوروتم حساب الحجم الحبيبي قد جد انه يزدادبعد التشعيع باشعة كاما من (6.424-9.091)nm. اما طيف الامتصاصية والنفاذية فقد سجل ضمن مدى الطول الموجي (300-1100) وقد وجد ان فجوة الطاقة تزداد بعد التشعيع باشعة كاما من (2.3-2.7)eV اما معامل الامتصاص ,معامل الخمود ،معامل الانكسار،ومعامل الجودة والتوصيلية البصرية تزداد بعد التشعيع باشعة كاما.

Abstract

To solve different problems related to the radiation stability of polymeric articles and purposeful radiation-induced modifications of polymeric materials, the effect of low dose of gamma irradiation on some mechanical properties, at room temperature and in the presence of oxygen, on blends of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and high impact polystyrene (HIPS) has been studied. Thermal – mechanical mixing was used to prepare binary polymeric blends from (HDPE / HIPS) with different compositional ratios, i.e. (100/0, 90/10, 80/20) using single screw extruder. The exposure of these blends to dose of Cs-137 gamma radiation at 0.2 kGy improves the mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been used to investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on the surface morphology of the polymer material. It is noticed that after the radiation treatment; tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and hardness of used (HDPE/HIPS) at all blends ratio have been increased due to partial cross linking.

لحل المشاكل المختلفة المرتبطة باستقرارية المواد البوليمرية عند تعرضها الى الاشعاع والحث على تطوير خصائص المواد البوليمرية باستخدام الاشعاع ،تمت دراسة تأثير جرعة قليلة من اشعة كاما على بعض الخصائص الميكانيكة لخلائط من البولي اثيلين العالي الكثافة HDPE والبولي ستايرين عالي الصدمة HIPS .ولقد تم تحضير خليط (HDPE/HIPS) بنسب وزنية مختلفة تشمل (0/100)،(10/90)و(20/80) باستخدام ماكنة البثق احادية اللولب و تعريضها الى جرعة مقدارها 0.2 KGY من اشعة كاما المنبعثة من المصدر CS-137.وكما تم استخدم المجهر الالكتروني الماسح لتشخيص التاثير الحاصل في طوباغرافية سطح المادة البوليمرية المستخدمة نتيجة تعرضها للاشعاع حيث ان بعد التشعيع اظهرت النتائج العملية ان مقاومة الشد ، معامل المرونة والصلادة لجميع النماذج المستخدمة ازدادت ولكل نسب الخلط المستخدمة وذلك نتيجة التشعيع تميل الى تشكيل روابط عرضية بين السلاسل ثؤثر على خصائصها الميكانيكية.

Abstract

Tin oxide films (SnO2) of thickness (1 m) are prepared on glass substrate by post oxidation of metal films technique. Films were irradiated with Nd:YAG double frequency laser of wavelength (532 nm) pulses of three energies (100, 500, 1000) mJ. The optical absorption, transmission, reflectance, refractive index and optical conductivity of these films are investigated in the UV-Vis region (200-900) nm. It was found that the average transmittance of the films is around (80%) at wavelength (550 nm) and showed high transmission ( 90 %) in the visible and near infrared region. The absorption edge shifts towards higher energies, which is due to the Moss-Burstien effect and it lies at (4 eV). The optical band gap increased with increasing of energy.

حضرت أغشية أوكسيد الخارصين (SnO2) بسمك (1 m) على قواعد من الزجاج بطريقة الأكسدة اللاحقة لأغشية المعدن Sn. تم تشعيع الأغشية بنبضات ليزر Nd:YAG ذو التردد المزدوج عند الطول الموجي (532 nm) وبثلاث طاقات (100, 500, 1000)mJ. درست الامتصاصية البصرية، النفاذية، الانعكاسية، معامل الانكسار و التوصيلية البصرية لهذه الأغشية في منطقة UV-VIS ذو المدى (200-900) nm. وجد ان معدل النفاذية لهذه الأغشية تقترب من (80 %) عند الطول الموجي (550 nm) وان اعلى نفاذية تقترب من (90 %) في المدى المرئي وتحت الحمراء القريبة. حافة الامتصاص تزحف نحو الطاقات العالية التي تعزى الى تأثير بيرشتاين-موس وتقع في المدى (4 eV). ان فجوة الطاقة البصرية تزداد عند زيادة طاقة اشعاع الليزر.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve the efficiency of solar cells composed of silicon single
crystal. The silicon crystal was subjected to pulsed laser of wave length (1.06 &#956;m) type Nd –Glass
under the condition of darkness and illumination.
Electrical properties (I-V) of the irradiated solar cells were studied. The results revealed that the
efficiency of some cells is increased after directly irradiated till arrival to steady state. On the other
hand some of other cells suffer’s reducing in its efficiency after irradiated till arrival to steady state.

يهتم هذا البحث بدراسة تطوير كفاءة الخلايا الشمسية السليكونية أحادية البلورة في حالتي الظلام والأضاءة قبل وبعد التشعيع بأستخدام ليزر Nd-glass النبضي ذو طول موجي (1.06 μm) وبكثافة طاقات مختلفة للأشعاع الليزري. من خلال دراسة الخصائص الكهربائية(I-V) للخلايا الشمسية المشععة, تم التوصل الى حدوث ارتفاع في الكفاءة لبعض الخلايا بعد التشعيع مباشرة" وحتى الوصول الى حالة الاستقرار باالأضافة الى حدوث انخفاض في الكفاءة لخلايا اخرى بعد التشعيع وصولا" الى حالة الأستقرار.

Abstract

Nowadays proton beam radiation therapy is considered in few centers for management of malignancies. This study is aimed to explore the effect of proton, helium or carbon irradiation on free radicals. This study was conducted in Department of Physiology/Medical Physics, College of Medicine, Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad, Iraq during October 2009. TRIM-SRIM software version 1998 and 2003 were used for computed Bragg peak and for calculated the effect of proton, helium and carbon ions against free radicals related to oxygen, nitrogen and halogen species.The lowest stopping power near Bragg's peak of proton targeting free radicals was against superoxide anion and its curve (the stopping power against energy) was shifted down while that of peroxynitrite (ONOO-) was shifted up. The stopping powers of helium targeting all studied free radicals were lower than corresponding proton irradiation but it required higher energy. Lower stopping power of carbon irradiation targeted hydroxyl (OH-) and halogenated radicals than the other reactive species were observed. It concludes that such form of external beam irradiation is associated with direct scavenging effect on free radicals of whatever sources.

THE PRESERVATIVE EFFECT OF TREHALOSE

Abstract

ABSTRACT Two isolates Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were used in this study, Results showed that bacteria treated with 100 mM Trehalose was able to preserved S.aureus from drying for one month in room temperature, while no effect was observed in the Trehalose treated E.coli. Results also indicated that Trehalose preservative effects were for month. The survival percentage of S.aureus treated with Trehalose after 1 month was 67% compared with the control 30%, while the results of E.coli was 66% compared with the control 32%. Results also indicated that Trehalose can protect the lyophilized bacteria stored in room Temperature for 4 months. The percentage of the viable cells of bacteria was 27% compared with the control 2%. Results also revealed that the protective effects of Trehalose reduced the lethal effects of UV Irradiation. Results indicated that S.aureus treated with Trehalose was more resistance to Tetracycline, Gentamycin, Erythromycin and Norfoxacin, Antibiotics in comparison with the control treatment, while no effect was indicated in the trehalose treated E.coli resistance ability to these antibiotics.

الخلاصة أُستعملت عزلتان من البكتريا إحدهما تعود إلى جنس المكورات الذهبية الأخرى لبكتريا القولون. أظهرت النتائج بأن معاملة البكتريا بـ 100 ملي مولار تريهالوز له القدرة على حفظ بكتريا المكورات العنقودية من الجفاف ولمدة شهر في درجة حرارة الغرفة الاعتيادية، في حين لم يلاحظ أي تأثير في بكتريا القولون المعاملة بنفس النسبة من التريهالوز. بينت النتائج التأثير الحافظ لسكر التريهالوز في حالة خزن البكتريا في ظروف الانجماد و لمدة أربعة أسابيع وكانت نسبة بقائية بكتريا المكورات الذهبية 67% مقارنة مع السيطرة بنسبة 30% بينما كانت النتائج في بكتريا القولون 66% والسيطرة 32%. وأشارت النتائج أيضاً إلى قدرة الحماية التي يوفرها السكر للبكتريا المجفدة المخزونة في درجة حرارة الغرفة ولمدة 4 أشهر، حيث كانت نسبة البقائية للبكتريا المعاملة بالتريهالوز 27% والسيطرة 2%. أظهر التريهالوز تأثيرات الحماية للبكتريا من الأشعة فوق البنفسجية.بينت النتائج المعاملة بالتريهالوز ان بكتريا المكورات العنقودية الذهبيةأصبحت أكثر مقاومة لمضادات Norfloxacin, Erythromycin, Tetracycline Gentamycin, في حين بقت بكتريا السيطرة حساسة لها، ولم يظهر أي تأثير للتريهالوز في مقاومة بكتريا القولون لمضادات الحيوية.

Abstract

Background: Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) is a rare, but usually fatal, complication of transfusion. The risk associated with an individual transfusion depends on the number and viability of contaminating lymphocytes, the susceptibility of the patient's immune system to their engraftment and the degree of immunological disparity between donor and patient. The mainstay of prevention is gamma irradiation, which inactivates T lymphocytes whilst preserving the function of other blood cells. Objective: Comparison between the two methods of assay of MS9 and Try Pan blue assay to study the effect of radiation on blood storage Materials & Methods: Nine pints of blood had been taken from Notional Center for blood transfusion. From these pints, 255 samples were taken for test, 156 samples of blood exposed to high doses of gamma radiation of 15, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30Gy. This radiation, obtained from 60Co available in Hospital of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine in Baghdad, and the other 99 samples were used as a control. Blood Components are count by try pan blue in a way that nine pints of blood were utilized and from each pint several samples were used, eight of them were exposed to radiation of doses 15, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30Gy, assay of try pan blue was used for counting the No. of red blood cells & lymphocyte cells whenever testing. The other pint used as a control sample before and after irradiation immediately.Results: From the results the assays by Try pan blue to count the viability of (lymphocyte cells and RBCs) was more accurate than assay by heamocounter MS9 (Haemocounter MS9 was used for automatic counts of blood cells) to know the period of the blood storage. Abstract

Casting films method for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) doped with CrCl3 have been prepared. The electrical conductivity (σ), and dielectric constant (ε'), for unirradiated and irradiated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) samples doped with CrCl3 with three different concentration (10, 12, and 20%wt) were studied. The samples were deposited to three different doses f -irradiation (56.1, 112.2, and 224.4KGy). The electrical conductivity, and dielectric constant in the frequency (200-105 Hz ) were measured at room temperature. The electrical conductivity increase with increasing in dopant concentration as well as -irradiation.

تم دراسة التوصيلية الكهربائية (σ)، ثابت العزل (ε') للعينات المشععة وغير المشععة لعينات بولي فاينيل الكحول المطعمة بكلوريد الكروم وبثلاث تراكيز مختلفة ((10, 12, 20wt%. عُرِضت العينات الى ثلاث جُرع مختلفة من اشعة كاما (56.1, 112.2, and 224.4KGy). قيست التوصيلية الكهربائية وثابت العزل ضمن مدى الترددات (200-105 Hz) وفي درجة حرارة الغرفة. لوحظ ان التوصيلية الكهربائية تزداد بزيادة التطعيم و بزيادة الجرع .
