Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACK GROUND:Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a common, chronic widespread pain syndrome usually associated with other somatic and psychologic symptoms including fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties Oxidative stress means an alteration in the delicate balance between free radicals and the scavenging capacity of antioxidant enzymes in favor of free radical in the body system.OBJECTIVE:To evaluate and compare the antioxidants and lipid peroxidation in patients with fibromyalgia and healthy control.PATIENTS AND METHOD;The study has included sixty patients with FMS (40 females and 20 males) and thirty healthy subjects. The subjects were selected from people attending the out patients clinic in Medical City- Baghdad Teaching Hospital- Rheumatology& Rehabilitation Consultation Unit. Laboratory parameters included: uric acid,albumin,caeruloplasmin,total thaiol,malondiaaldehyde(MDA) and peroxinitrate(ONOO¯ ).RESULTS:MDA and uric acid levels in serum of patients with fibromyalgia were significantly higher than in the control group. While the levels of ONOO¯ GSH,CP,albumin in serum of patients with fibromyalgia were significantly lower than in healthy control.CONCLUSION:oxidative stress may have a role in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia syndrome.

Abstract

Back ground: multiple sclerosis (MS) has a much higher incidence among Caucasians that in any other race. Females are much more susceptible than males and white females living in colder weather areas are much more susceptible than those living in warmer areas. Oxidative stress means an alteration in the delicate balance between free radicals and the scavenging capacity of antioxidant enzymes in favor of free radicals in the body system.Objective: To evaluate and compare the antioxidants and lipid peroxidation in patients with MS and healthy control.Patients and method: The study has included thirty patients with MS (16 females and 14 males) and thirty healthy subjects. The subjects were selected from people attending the out patients clinic of Baghdad Teaching Hospital in Medical City. Laboratory parameters included were: uric acid, albumin, and caeruloplasmin, total thaiol, malondiaaldehyde (MDA) and peroxinitrate (ONOO¯).Results: MDA and ONOO¯ levels in serum of patients with MS were significantly higher than in the control group. While the levels of GSH, CP, albumin, uric acid, iron, copper and zinc in serum of patients with MS were significantly lower than in healthy control.Conclusion: Oxidative stress may have a role in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis syndromes.

Effect of aqueous extract of Asparagus officinalis on some Antioxidants in Rats Exposed to Oxidative Stress induced by Hydrogen peroxide

Abstract

The current study dealt with using of hydrogen peroxide with 0.5% with drinking water to induce state of oxidative stress in male rats and estimate the ability of different concentrations of the aqueous extract of asparagus officinalis to reduce the effects of oxidative stress during periods 0,15,30 days by measuring the following parameters in serum: Glutathione(GSH), Malondialdehyde (MDA), the activity of super oxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) and the peroxynitrate radical (ONOO).Fifty male rats with the age of 3-4 months and weight of 300-400 gm were distributed into 5 groups: group (1): control group received drinking tap water, group (2): treated with H2O2 0.5% in drinking water, group (3): treated with H2O2 and asparagus officinalis 5%, group (4): treated with H2O2 and asparagus officinalis 10%, group (5): treated with H2O2 and asparagus officinalis 20% . Hydrogen peroxide treatment led to a significant decrease (P <0.05) of the GSH and SOD activities and increase of the MDA and ONOO levels in the serum during treatment periods compared with the control group. The results of using different concentrations of aqueous extract of asparagus on rats revealed similar effects but not identical in the protection from the oxidative stress induced by Hydrogen Peroxide , because its effect was affected on the level of GSH, SOD, MDA and ONOO levels in the blood serum in different experiment period

تناولت الدراسة الحالية استخدام بيروكسيد الهيدروجين بتركيز 0.5% في ماء الشرب لاحداث حالة الإجهاد التأكسدي في ذكور الجرذان واختبار قابلية التراكيز المختلفة للمستخلص المائي لنبات الهليون للحد من تأثيرات الإجهاد التأكسدي خلال الفترات 0، 15، 30 يوماً عن طريق قياس مستوى المتغيرات الآتية في مصل الدم: الكلوتاثايون، المالوندايالديهايد، فعالية أنزيم SOD، بيروكسي نيتريت في مصل الدم. استخدم 50 ذكراً من الجرذان البيض بعمر 3-4 أشهر، تراوحت أوزانها مابين 300-400 غم وزعت عشوائيا إلى 5 مجاميع: مجموعة السيطرة (1) التي استهلكت ماء الشرب الاعتيادي، مجموعة (2) عوملت ببيروكسيد الهيدروجين H2O2 0.5% في ماء الشرب، مجموعة (3) عوملت بـH2O2 والمستخلص المائي للهليون بتركيز 5 %، مجموعة (4) عوملت بـH2O2 والهليون بتركيز 10 %، مجموعة (5) عوملت بـH2O2 والهليون بتركيز 20 %. أدت المعاملة بـH2O2 الى احداث انخفاضاً معنوياً (P<0.05) في مستوى الكلوتاثايون Glutathione(GSH) وفعالية أنزيم super oxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) بينما سببت ارتفاعاً معنوياً في مستوى المالوندايالديهايدMalondialdehyde (MDA) وبيروكسي نتريت في مصل الدم لأغلب فترات المعاملة مقارنة مع مجموعة السيطرة (P<0.05). تبين أن لاضافة المستخلص المائي لنبات الهليون تأثيراً ايجابياً في الحماية من الأذى التأكسدي المحدث ببيروكسيد الهيدروجين، اذ كان تاثيره واضحاً على مستوى الكلوتاثيون والمالوندايالديهايد وفعالية أنزيم SOD والبيروكسي نيتريت في مصل الدم
