Abstract

In this study we examined the effect of various sensitizing doses of infective Toxocara canis eggs and the trapping of larvae in different tissues of the murine host. The level of trapping increased with sensitization egg doses. Different doses of Toxocara canis eggs were given to ten groups each with five mice and then necropsied after different periods. Experimental toxocariasis in mice sacrificed at (1,2 and 3) weeks post infection showed no lesions in mice given 50, 75 and 100 Toxocara canis eggs respectively. Other groups given higher doses of T.canis eggs between (125-500 eggs) showed lesions in liver, lungs, eyes and muscles of sacrificed mice after 4 weeks of infection.

Abstract

Background:Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that is widely used in the treatment of patients with breast cancer and for chemoprophylaxis in high risk women. Tamoxifen results in a spectrum of endometrial changes due to it's estrogenic effect on the endometrium. Objectives:To evaluate the extent of endometrial pathologies that might develop in postmenopausal breast cancer patients following treatment with tamoxifen. Methods:Sixty postmenapausal with breast carcinoma women were involved in this study, Thirty women were receiving 20-40 mg of tamoxifen daily for a period of 6 to 60 months constitutes the study group, and a control group included 30 postmenopausal breast carcinoma patients who were not receiving tamoxifen. Transvaginal sonography was performed for the measurements of the endometrial thickness and the presence of endometrial pathology. All the patients underwent endometrial sampling and the curetting were sent for histopathological examination. Results:There was statistically significant increase in the frequency of endometrial pathology in those on tamoxifen;there was 11 endometrial pathologies in the case group, while the control group was associated with only 3 pathologies(p=0.015). There was significant difference in endometrial thickness between case group (0.73+0.32 mm) and the control group (0.5+0.16mm) with p value 0.002. Only patients with endometrial thickness of more than 5mm were associated with pathologies, 7 (38.8%) of the endometrial biopsies revealed normal endometrium, whereas, 11(61.1%) had endometrial pathology like hyperplasia, endometrial polyp or carcinoma. The rate of endometrial pathologies considerably increase with increasing duration of treatment. Conclusion:The long term use of tamoxifen as adjuvant therapy for carcinoma breast is associated with increase frequency of endometrial pathology. Endometrial thickness is increased in such patients and is related to the duration of tamoxifen use.Key Words:Tamoxifen, Endomatrial pathology, Breast cancer.

Abstract

Background and objective: Abnormal uterine bleeding due to endometrial abnormalities is a common diagnostic challenge facing the radiologist and referring gynecologist. This study was aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of transvaginal ultrasound, transabdominal ultrasound and diagnostic curettage in the detection of endometrial pathologies in symptomatic women. Methods: A prospective comparison study of transvaginal ultrasound, transabdominal ultrasound and diagnostic curettage was conducted for evaluation of endometrial pathology in Maternity Teaching Hospital, Erbil city,Kurdistan region of Iraq, from September13th, 2013 to September14th, 2014. The study included 100 women presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding.Ultrasound findings were compared with histopathological results. The statistical package for the social sciences (version 17) was used for data entry and analysis. Results: The mean age (± SD) of sample size was 47 ±8.57 years. The mean parity was 5.17 ± 2.71. The highest percentages of women were in age group 40-59 years (73%). Of the total sample, more than half (52%) had regular cycles, 25% had irregular cycles and 23% were in menopausal state. In more than half of cases the indication for ultrasounds was for menorrhagia, followed by postmenapousal and intermenstrual bleeding (23% and 21%, respectively). Of 98 women (2 women were excluded from analysis), 19% had atrophic endometrium and 67% had endometrial hyperplasia in histopathological finding. Transvaginal ultrasound sensitivity and specificity were 100% and 92.9%, respectively while transabdominal ultrasound sensitivity and specificity were 92.8% and 65%, respectively. Conclusion: Transvaginal ultrasound scanning is an excellent tool for the determination of whether further investigation with histopathological examination of endometrial biopsy is necessary or not for women presented with abnormal uterine bleeding.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROUND:Chronic cystitis symptoms with negative cultures always represent achallenge to the urologist because of the uncertainty in etiology and heterogenous pathological findings.OBJECTIVE:To elecit the role of cystoscopy and biopsy in disclosing the different pathological patterns in our patients with chronic cystitis like syndrome and to compare them with the pathological patterns of western patients.PATIENTS AND METHODES:This study included 64 patients (40 males and 24 females) with a persistent symptom complex of supra pubic pain, dysuria, frequency and urgency (cystitis –like syndrome)for 12 months and above , in the absence of neurological and gynaeco logical findings or positive cultures. The mean patient age was 38 years (20-68ys).The mean duration of symptoms was 26 months .All patients were subjected to a full urological evaluation, cystoscopy under G/A with hydro distension , biopsy and histopathologic examination .RESULTS:The commonest cystoscopic findings were dilated vessels, sub mucosal petechial haemorrhage after hydro distension , bilharzial lesions, mucosal cracks and small polypoid masses.Histopathologic examination revealed variable lesions as chr. Inflammatory cell infiltration, Brunns nests, cystitis cystica, metaplasia , Bilharzial reaction and ova and in situ carcinoma. Most patients had more than one lesion , especially sub mucosal petechial haemorrhage associated with bilharzial lesions or in situ carcinoma.CONCLUSION:In our patients, the chronic abacterial cystitis syndrome is common in both males and females and has different pathological findings. It is therefore , different from the pattern of the syndrome found in western patients where it mainly affects females and most often in the form of interstitial cystitis .This may be attributed to the high prevalence of stone disease and bilharziasis in addition to the highly concentrated urine of our patients. We, thus , consider it mandatory to do cystoscopy and bladder biopsy for every patient presenting with chronic cystitis like symptoms

Abstract

Pathological study (crossly and histologically) of experimentally induced of visceral gout syndrome was studied for 35 days after intake of high dietary calcium and protein concentration in Nassirya City Broilers. Forty healthy birds (aged 1 day) were used and divided into two groups. The first group had given normal diet {NCNP, 8.5g ca kg and 175g cp kg}, while the second group had given high concentration of dietary calcium and crude protein {HCHP, 30G CA KG AND 250G cp kg}. All birds at 35 days examined grossly and histopathologically. Typical visceral gout was induced by the HCHP in which caused severe kidney damage (failure of urinary excretion) leading to accumulation of urate crystals in various parts of the body like pericardium, peritoneum, air sacs and liver capsule. Distended ureters often containing white calcium urate calculi (uroliths), besides histological changes in the myocardium, kidney, and ureters.
