Abstract

Background: Many materials were proposed as root canal obturating materials but the biocompatibility issueremains to be a critical one. Propolis has been used as a therapeutic agent since the time of Hippocrates. It is knownthat propolis exhibits some pharmacological activities, such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiinflammatory activity.Materials and methods: Eighteen albino rats were used in the study and divided randomly into three groups of 6animals for each group. Each group was scheduled to be sacrificed at different time periods, which were threedays, one week and three weeks. Propolis and ZOE sealer implants of 4mm in diameter and 0.5 gm in weight wereimplanted in the dorsal side of the rats. At the end of the implantation, the rats were scarified and thehistopathological picture was made to the implantation site.Results: Zinc oxide eugenol sealer showed severe inflammation after 3 days of implantation whci subsided after 7days. After 21 days, moderate inflammatory reaction was evident. Propolis presented moderate reaction after 3 and7 days but with presence of signs of collagen fiber formation. After 21 days, connective tissue capsule was present.Conclusion: Propolis presented better biocompatibility than zinc oxide eugenol sealer

Abstract

Aim: To asses the effects of topical application of aqueous extract of either Propolis or Miswak on the post–operative outcomes in relation to the duration of operation after surgical removal of lower thirdmolar was performed. Material and Methods: A total of 97 patients participated and distributed randomly into 3 groups according to the medicament applied into the extraction socket: Group I, in which 5% aqueous solution of propolis extract used; group II, in which 10% aqueous solution of Miswak extract used; and group III, in which distilled water used (control group). Results: A significant improvement in post–operative outcome at 3rd day in both group I and II comparing to group III was observed. No significant difference noticed at 1st day and 6th day. Assessment of dry socket showed no significant difference in between the three study groups. However, when assessmentperformed in relation with operation time, a significant difference noticed in between the three study groups with high incidence of dry socket reported in operation take longer than 30 minutes in the threestudy groups. Conclusion: Aqueous extract of Miswak and Propolis as a topical medicament following lower third molar extraction had a slight reducing effect on the severity of post–operative complications.

Abstract

The experiment was conducted to study the effect of adding propolis powder to the diet on productive , carcass characteristics and blood parameters in broiler chicks. Total of 180 1- day- old chicks were distributed randomly among four dietary treatments ofpropolis 0 , 0.5 , 1.5 and 2.5 g/kg diets . Each treatment was contain three replicate (15 birds / pen ). The results revealed that propolis supplementation at levels of 0.5 and 1.5 g/kg significantly (p<0.05) improved final body weight, weight gains and feed conversion ratios during the period from 15 to 28 days and the accumulative period (1-28 days of age) . However, there was no significant difference among treatment in feed intake. There were no significant difference in carcass yield, in relative weights of liver , gizzard, heart , spleen , bursa of fabricius, in relative weight and length of the intestine ,cecum , in carcass length at the end of the study. However , chicks fed 2.5 g / Kgpropolis had significant (p<0.05) reduction in total serum protein and albumin while increases in cholesterol and glucose levels as compared with the other treatments . These result indicate that supplementary propolis powder at 0.5 and 1.5 % had beneficial effects on productive traits but no significant effect on carcass characteristics or the hematological parameters examined in broiler chicks.

Abstract

background: Propolis is a natural resinous product that honeybees collect from several plants and mix it with bees wax and salivary enzymes that is also called bee glue. Propolis has many properties that make it is chief in the medicine including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antitumor and immunodulatory properties. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate immune adjuvant activity of propolis against Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus MRSA in vivo. Materials and Methods: Twenty male white New Zealand rabbits included in this study, that divided into tow groups (10 rabbits at each one), group I received orally one milliliter of Ethanolic Exract Propolis (EEP) at 20% concentration per day for lasting 20 days, while group II have no received any thing as control group. After 10 days from last dose of adminstration of EEP, all animals injected in intraperitonial (IP) with six doses of 108 cfu/ ml of killed somatic antigen of Staphylococcus aureus. Blood samples were taken by heart puncture from all animals to detect the immunological parameters by ELISA technique.Results: Results revealed to significantly increased the mean value of total leukocytes counts (TLCs) in group I (5705 cells/mm3) as comparing with group II (4600 cells/mm 3), at level p ˂ 0.05, as well as the results pointed to increased significantly the percentage of neutrophil cells in group I (42%) as compared with group II (34%), in contrast to lymphocytes results that show significantly decrease in group I ( 54% ) as compared with group II ( 61%), in addition, monocytes, eosinophil and basophil were have no differences among the testing groups. Phagocytic activity result shows increased significantly in group I (55.47%) as compared with group II (43.94%). The results of complement component C3 revealed increased significantly in group I (69.76 pg/mL) as compared with group II (18.61 pg/mL), while the results of C4 concentration pointed to increase significantly in group I (4.20 pg/ml) as compared with group II (2.38 pg. /ml). IFN-γ concentration results revealed increased significantly in group I (22.18 pg/mL) as compared with group II (18.05 pg/mL. IL-2 results referred to increased significantly in group I (32.42 pg/mL) as compared with group II (24.27 pg/mL). On the other hand, the level of perforin was increased significantly in group I (0.23 ng/ mL) as compared with group II (0.12 ng/ mL).Conclusion: It was concluded that propolis improve immune responses as adjuvant against MRSA antigen via increase the levels of cellular immunity elements.

Abstract

This study compared the clinical efficacy of different mouthwashes [0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), 0.5%, 1% water extract of propolis, 0.5%, 1% ethanolic extract of propolis] with distilled water in their ability to inhibit plaque accumulation. In this double blind study, 10 (8 males and 2 females) dental students volunteers aged from 20-24 years, 1120 tooth surfaces from 280 teeth were examined. Each volunteer received a final professional tooth cleansing and was instructed to stop all mechanical tooth cleaning effort for next 5 days, where the mouthwashes used 3 times daily. Plaque system index (Silness and Löe, 1964) was obtained from teeth surfaces (buccal, lingual, mesial and distal) before and after the uses of mouthwashes. The results of this study showed significant difference (p < 0.05) between 0.2% CHX, 0.5% and 1% water extract of propolis, 0.5% ethanolic extract of propolis and distilled water, but non significant difference (p > 0.05) between CHX and 1% ethanolic extract of propolis in their ability to inhibit plaque accumulation. It can be concluded that the alcoholic extract of propolis may be used as adjunct to mechanical plaque control during the maintenance phase of therapy to ensure sustained low plaque level and this may meet patient approval because it is a natural substance and devoid of industrial chemical component.

Abstract

Aims to evaluate some properties of temporary soft liner (Bony plus) and permanent soft liner (vertex) before and after adding propolis extracts to it. Materials and methods ethanolic extracts of propolis(ethanolic extract of propolis) was added to temporary soft liner (Bony plus), and glycolic extract of propolis(glycolic extract of propolis) was added to permanent soft liner (vertex), then the volumetric dimensional changes, hardness, water absorption and solubility were evaluate, the total samples were (128). Results showed the presence of significant diffrence in the Hardness, Water absorption and Solubility of the modified soft liners (After adding propolis to it), and there was no significant diffrence in the volume of the soft liners before and after adding propolis.Conclusions the volumetric changes of modified and control group of permanent soft liner (vertex) was no significantly different, The modification type (for both permanent and temporary) of soft liner was significantly softer than the control group along the period of storage (1 month) and the modification type (for both permanent and temporary) of soft liner was significantly have more water absorption and solubility than the control group along the period of storage (1 month)

Abstract

Amoebiasis is the third leading cause of death from parasitic disease worldwide. The causative protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica, is a potent pathogen. Propolis is a natural resinous substance collected by bees from vegetable sources and it has a therapeutic properties have been investigated in this work. So we evaluated the inhibitory activity of ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) on Entamoeba histolytica trophozoite growth. Propolis inhibited the growth of E.histolytica trophozoites and the level of inhibition varied according to the extract concentration and incubation times, it also showed a marked activity on cell lysis of trophozoite. The highest reduction of parasite growth was observed in culture exposed to (25,50 mg/ml) of propolis, in all incubation periods (24,48 )h. Growth reduction by 76 % was observed in 12.5 mg/ml propolis-treated culture, while the concentrations of (25, 50) mg/ml were able to inhibit growth by more than 90%. Light microscopic study showed morphological changes in E.histolytica trophozoites.

يعد داء المتحولات الأميبية ثالث أكثر الإمراض الطفيلية المميتة شيوعا في العالم , ويعد طفيلي الاميبا الحالة للنسج المسبب الرئيسي لهذا المرض . وبالنسبة للعكبر فيعد مادة راتنجية طبيعية تجمع وتتكون من مصادر نباتية بواسطة النحل ويعد مصدرا علاجيا . لذلك تم دراسة الفعالية التثبيطية للعكبر على الاطوار المتغذية للاميبا الحالة للنسج في الزجاج . أظهرت النتائج فعالية العكبر في تثبيط نمو الأطوار المتغذية وبالاعتماد على تركيز المستخلص ووقت التعرض كما لوحظ تحلل الاطوار المتغذية للطفيلي ، كما أظهرت أعلى نسبة تثبيط لنمو الأطوار المتغذية للطفيلي عند التراكيز ( 25 ,50 ) ملغم/ مليلتير من المستخلص الكحولي للعكبر أذ بلغت 90% ، بينما عند التركيز 12.5 ملغم/مليلتير فقد بلغت فعالية المعاملة 76%. فضلاً عن ذلك فقد لوحظ تغيرات شكلية لطفيلي الاميبا الحالة للنسج المعامل بالمستخلص الكحولي للعكبر

Abstract

Aims: To evaluate and compare the effect of human saliva, artificial saliva and propolis extract on the wettability of heat−cured and visible light −cured denture base material .Materials and Methods: A total of 80 samples were prepared , 40 samples prepared from heat cured resin and the other 40 samples were prepared from light cured resin. These two groups were divided into four subgroups, control group, human saliva, artificial saliva and propolis. Contact angle measurements by sessile drop method with a micropipette using digital camera to determine the wettability of these samples. Mean values were compared statistically with one way analysis of variance (ANOVA),Duncan's multiple range test and t−test to determine the significant difference among the tested groups. Results: There is a signifi-cant differences of the mean values of the contact angle among the tested groups. The contact angle significantly decreased in all the treated samples. Conclusion: Heat cured resin has more wettability than light cured resin. Human saliva, artificial saliva and propolis increased the wettability of both heat cured and light cured resin

Abstract

This study was aimed to find the effect of the active components in propolis which were extracted by ethyl-alcohol on inhibition of the growth of Staphylococcus aureus for it is clinical importance us the causative agent of numerous disease. The present study was conducted in microbiology laboratory Department of biology of education of girls college ,of Kufa University in 13 at 1562008. This study proved from the preliminary chemical (filtration) test that; the ethanolic extractof propolis contains phenolic compounds(Flavonids,Tannins,Coumarin).Alkaloids and terpin ,the propolis extract was effected in inhibition growth of S. aureus and the highest inhibition zone diameter was (23)mm in concentration (100)mgm1.

تضمنت هذه الدراسة معرفة تأثير المواد الفعالة المستخلصة بالكحول الاثيلي من مادة البربولس propolis في تثبيط نمو بكتريا المكورات العنقودية الذهبية Staphylococcus aureus خــارج الجسم الحي in vitro وذلك لأهميتها ألسريريه بصفتها من البكتريا المرضية المسببة للعديد من الأخماج في الإنسان. وأجريت هذه الدراسة في مختبر الأحياء المجهرية التابع لقسم علوم الحياة في كلية التربية للبنات في جامعة الكوفة للفترة من الاول من اذار ولغاية الخامس عشر من حزيران لعام 2008 . وقد بينت نتائج الكشف التمهيدي للمستخلص الكحولي للبربولس انه يحتوي على مواد فعالة مثــــــــــل القلويـــــداتalkaloids والمركبات الفينولية التي تضم الفلافونات flavonids والكومارين coumarin والتانينـات tannins وكما يحتوي على التربنيات terpin وبلغ اعلى معدل للقطر التثبيطي للمستخلـــص الكحولــــي (23) ملــم عند التركيــــــــز (100) ملغم/ مل.

Abstract

The Purpose of present study was to prepare and evaluate new modified release formulations of paracetamol using supplement powder of propolis (bee glue) as matrices for release. Two types of formulations were prepared (physical blends of drug and propolis powder and solid matrix form by solvent evaporation method). Pre compression (compressibility index, hausner ratio and angle of repose) and post compression (hardness, friability and disintegration tests) evaluation studies were done. Tablets and capsules were prepared for paracetamol formulations. The drug: propolis powder interaction was evaluated by FT-IR spectroscopic method. The dissolution rate of the formulations was studied by USP dissolution. The data of release were subjected to different models in order to determined their release mechanisms and kinetics. The results show that, the drug release (87 %, 85.9% and 73% which is in the order of F1>F2>F3 at 5 hrs) was higher from the formulation prepared by direct compression of physical blends as compared to solid matrix formulations prepared by solvent evaporation method(42.5 %, 40.8 % and 33.6 % for FM1, FM2 and FM3 respectively). Drug release kinetics shows the drug release by nonfickian diffusion mechanism. Results indicate that incorporation of propolis powder in the formulations decreased drug release and the tablet formulation was better in comparison with capsules formulation. The developed propolis matrix tablets of parcetamol may be used for modified release of drug.

الغرض من الدراسة الحالية هو لتحضير وتقييم صيغ جديدة معدلة التحرر للعقار البراستامول باستخدام باودر البروبولس كقالب تحرر.نوعين من الصيغ تم تحضيرها (الخليط فيزيائي من العقار وباودر البروبولس و صيغة القالب الصلب بواسطة طريقة تبخير المذيب). تم عمل دراسات تقييم الى ما قبل الكبس (زاوية ألاستناد نسبة هاوسنر ومؤشر قابلية الانضغاط) وما بعد الكبس(اختبارات الصلابة والتفتت والانحلال). وقد تم تحضير اقراص وكبسولات لصيغ البراستامول. تفاعل العقار مع باودر البروبولس تم تقييمه بواسطة مطياف الاشعة تحت الحمراء. ان معدل الذوبان للصيغ تم دراستها حسب ذوبانية الدستور الامريكي. كما ان بيانات التحرر خضعت لموديلات مختلفة لغرض تعيين الية وحركية التحرر. النتائج اظهرت ان تحرر العقار (87 %, 85.9%, %73 عند الساعة خمسة ( F1>F2>F3 كان اعلى من الصيغ المحضرة بواسطة الكبس المباشر للخليط الفيزيائي بالمقارنة بصيغ القالب الصلب المحضرة بطريقة تبخير المذيب)42.5%, 40.8%, 33.6% ل FM1, FM3, FM2 بالتوالي). ان حركية تحرر العقار اظهرت ان تحرر الدواء بالية نفوذية النونفيكين. النتائج اظهرت بان دمج باودر البروبولس بالصيغ يقلل من تحرر الدواء وان صيغة القرص افضل بالمقارنة بالكبسولة. ان تطوير اقراص البروبولس الصلبة للعقار البراستامول يمكن ان تستخدم لتعديل تحرر الدواء.
