A comparison study of saliva content before and after menopause

Abstract

Background:- In recent year saliva test is used instead of blood test in many medical fields for being more accurate and not invasive, for example it is used for evaluation of the benefit of using hormonal replacement therapy as treatment in post menopausal women. Objective:- As relatively little is known about the effect of age on salivary composition, the aim of this study is to compare between saliva content before and after menopause for some of biochemical markers which are used for diagnosis of many medical condition and risk groups. Methods :- Sixty-eight female were participate in this study, divided for two groups the first group consist of thirty-four female in premenopausal age and another thirty-four female represent the second group postmenopausal.Salivary samples were taken to assess urea level, glucose level, uric acid and cholesterol levels. Results:- The results shows that urea level along with cholesterol level were significantly higher in postmenopausal women (P<0.01) while uric acid and glucose shows no significant difference (P>0.01).

في السنوات الأخيرة وفي العديد من الحقول الطبية بدأ الاعتماد على فحص اللعاب بدل الدم لأغراض التشخيص يكون أكثر استخدام كونه ومن الناحية الطبية أدق ولا يتسبب بالألم ومن ضمن هذه المجالات استخدامه لتقييم مدى الاستفادة من العلاج الهرموني للنساء بعد سن اليأس . ما نملكه من المعلومات حول التغيرات المحتمل حدوثها لمكونات اللعاب في المراحل العمرية المختلفة هي قليلة جدا" . ولهذا كان الهدف من هذه الدراسة هي إجراء مقارنة بين محتويات اللعاب للنساء قبل سن اليأس ومحتوياته بعد سن اليأس مركزين في البحث على بعض المتغيرات الكيميائية المهمة لأغراض التشخيص للعديد من الأمراض . اشتركت في هذا البحث 68 أمرآة مقسمات إلى مجموعتين أساسيتين الأولى للنساء قبل سن اليأس وكانت تشمل 34 فتاة وتتراوح أعمارهن بين 18-22 سنة ، وشملت المجموعة الثانية 34 امرأة بعد سن اليأس تراوحت أعمارهن بين 52-66 سنة .. تم جمع العينات من اللعاب لأغراض الفحص (اليوريا ، الكلوكوز ، اليورك اسد وأخيرا" الكولسترول ) أوضحت النتائج إن مستوى اليوريا مع الكولسترول كان عاليا" وبدلالة إحصائية معنوية لدى النساء بعد سن اليأس بينما لايوجد فرق في مستويات (اليورك اسد والكلوكوز (P 51-25 لدى المجموعتين .

Abstract

Back ground: Spectral analyses of solutions have long been applied to various body fluids for the purpose of clinical study as well as research .Human saliva can be easily obtained by non invasive .In this study typical spectra (for UV and IR) of saliva of oral cancer Squamous cell carcinoma patients were determined under average conditions and evaluated in relation to the spectra of normal specimens.Materials and Methods: Seventeen patients of oral cancer Squamous cell carcinoma and seventeen age matched healthy subject were included in this study .Chewing - Stimulated Saliva was collected in plastic test tube and stored at -20° C. Bach of saliva samples were used for UV and IR measurements.Results: Many differences between the IR spectrum of saliva of oral Squamous cell carcinoma patients and IR spectrum of normal saliva.Conclusion: The results in this study were detected that the use of IR spectroscopy may be useful in the diagnosis of oral Squamous cell carcinoma by using saliva samples.

تم تعيين أطياف الأشعة فوق البنفسجية (UV) والأشعة تحت الحمراء (IR) في هذه الدراسة لنماذج لعاب مرضى سرطان الفم Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma ونماذج اللعاب للأصحاء. ومن ثم مقارنة النتائج لغرض الحصول على الخط الخاص لكل منها ومن ثم الإستفادة منه لإغراض الدراسة السريرية. عينت العديد من الفروق بين الأشعة تحت الحمراء (IR) للعاب مرضى سرطان الفم وطيف لعاب الأصحاء.أقرت النتائج في هذه الدراسة إمكانية إستعمال مطيافية IR لأغراض التشخيص لمرض سرطان الفم باستخدام عينات اللعاب

Abstract

The use of bovine saliva as a wound dressing rriaterial. In the present study, bovine saliva was_applied to experimental by second intention on the eilrperimental wounds in rats , and it's effects on_ epithelization, wound contraction newly formed granulation tissue. T f I. We evaluated the time interval required for wound healing using a standard wound with andwithout bovine saliva. The bovine saliva did interfere with a normal development of wound healing. -Histological evaluation was considered to parameters the effect of bovine saliva on woundhealing. The effect appear to be due to an increase collagen activity , consequently improving the T_ collagen matrix and enhancing the breaking strength by lysosomes with saliva

استخدم في هذه التجربة لعاب الابقار كاحد مواد التضميد بوضعة تجريبيا على الجروح المستحدثة في الجرذان من خلال تاثيره على عملية الترميم الظهاري وتقليص الجرح وتكوين نسيج حبيبي جديدتم تقييم الفترات الزمنية لالتئام الجروح من خلال استحداث جروح نموذجية باستعمال لعاب الابقار الذي يتداخل مع التطور الطبيعي لعملية الالتئاماظهر التقييم النسيجي تغيرات كبيرةلتاثير لعاب الابقار على التئام الجروح نتيجة الزيادة في الفعالية الكولاجينية اضافة الى زيادة في الوسادة الكولاجينيةوزيادة قوة التحطيم الاليسوسومي للعاب

Detection of acid fast bacilli in the saliva of patients having pulmonary tuberculosis

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis is a serious disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The disease isreadily detected by demonstration of the bacteria in a clinical specimen. The purpose of this study was to determinethe density of acid fast bacilli in the mixed and parotid saliva samples and to compare them with the sputum, inaddition, to find out the efficacy of the saliva samples in the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.Subject and Methods: A sample of 25 patients of both sexes, Age ranged from 17-70 participated in this study,Unstimulated mixed saliva and the parotid saliva was collected for direct .smear of acid fast bacilli by Ziehl-Nelsonacid fast stain. Five samples were inoculated on Lowenstein Jensen media and storen brink media to determine thepresence of the bacilli in the samples.Results: Concerning the mycobacterium tuberculosis, about 60% of unstimulated mixed saliva revealed positive acidfast bacilli, while all samples of parotid saliva showed negative acid fast bacilli. There was no significant relationshipbetween the duration of signs and symptoms of disease and the detection of mycobacterium tuberculosis in thecollected specimens. The density of mycobacterium tuberculosis in the mixed saliva mainly was scanty which meanit was not more than 2-9 bacilli in at least 100 fields. This confirms the fact that the body fluids commonly contain onlysmall number of mycobacterium tuberculosis. The five samples of saliva which were inoculated on LowensteinJensen media and stonebrink media showed positive cultures.Conclusion: Mixed saliva was less efficient than sputum by direct smear of sputum

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of Saliva officinalis leaves.The active chemical components of leaves extracts were estimated and found, it‘s contain alkaloids,glycosides,flavonoids,terpenes,steroids,saponins, ,phenols ,cumarins and tannies. This study showed that ethanol extracts Saliva officinallis leaves have inhibitory effect on Gram posative and negative bacteria .From this result we concluded that this plant have a promising medicinal plant as antibacterial ,through out the inhibition effects on bacteria growth.

تم تقييم الفعالية المضادة للبكتريا للمستخلص الكحولي لأوراق نبات المرميةSaliva officinalis ، لقد اظهرت نتائج التحليل الكشوفات الكيميائية ان أوراق نبات المرمية تحتوي على القلويدات ، الكلايكوسيدات ، الفلافونات ، التربينات والسترويدات ، الصابونيات ،الراتنجيات ، الفينولات ،الكومارين والتآنين و أظهر المستخلص تاثيراً سلبياً على البكتريا السالبة والموجبة لصبغة كرام Klebsiella pneumonia , E.coli , Proteus vulgaris , Diplococcus pneumonia , Bacillus subtillis . وكان أقل تثبيط عند التركيز 0.1 ملي غرام/مل . هذه الدراسة تبين أن المستخلص الكحولي لأوراق نبات المرمية له تأثير تثبيطي على نمو البكتريا الموجبة والسالبة لصبغة غرام . لذا يمكن اعتبار هذه المستخلصات ومركباتها ذات فعالية تثبيطية للبكتريا ، ويمكن الاستفادة منها للسيطرة على الامراض البكتريا كونها مصدر طبيعي لمنع العديد من الاصابات الجرثومية مضادات البكتريا

Abstract

Background: Cortisol, the principal glucocorticoid in humans, plays a major role in metabolism and immune function. A cute exercise induces a change in plasma cortisol concentrations, which is dependent on the type of exercise. Several studies have investigated the effect of both acute and chronic resistance exercise on adrenocortical function.Objective: This study was designed to determine the level of salivary cortisol as a stress related hormone during pre- and post- exercise in college student- athletes.Materials and Methods: 10 males subjects (college student- athletes) were measured for height, weight, the general features of the participants are: Mean ±SD Age (year) 22 ± 2.79 Weight (Kg) 70.5±8.46, Height (Cm) 175.34±7.12, Three milliliters of un-stimulated total saliva was collected via passive drooling, at the beginning of each testing session (without stimulation, by spitting directly into a plastic tube), 5 min before, 5 min after the end of the match.Results: The results showed a significant increase the salivary cortisol level between post and pre- exercise and there was a strong association between increase salivary cortisol concentration and heavier exercise.Conclusions: During the course of a competitive season collegiate soccer players are exposed to a number of physical and psychological stressors from practice, conditioning, and competition. The ability of players to recover following such activities can ultimately affect the ability of the performance for ensuring physical activity.

Abstract

The (CD44) biomarker is considered as one candidate molecular marker for detection of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, it islisted as adhesion molecules. This protein has many functions and considered as multistructural cell surface protein which involved different pathological events. The over-expression of CD44 wasdetected in different cancers in human, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Therefore this study designed to evaluate the role of CD44 in OSCC, quantified in stimulated saliva, beside its correlation with smoking.This case-control study composed of 30 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who were smokers, and other 60 control persons for comparison: 30 subjects of them were smoking and others were free of smoking. CD44 was assessed by ELISA technique, in stimulated saliva collected from all groups.The result of this study show thatsalivary CD44 protein level significantly higher in smoker patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma in comparism to smoker and non-smoker control healthy persons, thus the CD44 protein have an important role, as a non-invasive way, in the early diagnosis and monitoring of oral squamous cell carcinoma patients.

Abstract

Fifty gingivitis patients were diagnosed by dentist and ten normal subjects were elected as controls. Gingivitis patients and controls were investigated for serum and salivary IgA determinations. In which, blood and salivary samples were collected from both of patients and controls. Sera, saliva and salivary proteins in five microliter amounts per each of which were applied into low and high level anti IgA partigens. The patients sera have shown elevated IgA concentration means which approximate one fold increase than that of controls. Male and female patients were of comparable serum IgA concentration levels. Individual variation plot were found of multipeak type. The age group 30– 34 and 35 – 39 years were showing optimum concentration means . Saliva and salivary concentration means were showing nullified IgA concentrations in both patients and controls. IgA may interacts with are oral available antigens (microbial ) and fix complement thus forming complex giving nullified IgA concentrations.

Abstract

Background: Waterpipe tobacco smoking has become common especially among young people, Waterpipe smoking misconcepted as a safer mean of smoking, so in this study we will highlight the effect of Waterpipe smoking ‎on periodontal and oral health.‎Materials and method. The selected ‎‎‎100 male subjects of 30-40 years, ‎categorized into 4 groups (each group ‎‎25 subject): Waterpipe smoker ‎with ‎healthy periodontium, ‎Waterpipe smoker ‎‎with chronic periodontitis, Non-‎‎smoker ‎with healthy periodontium and Non-smoker ‎with chronic periodontitis. Whole ‎unstimulated ‎saliva was collected. Clinical measurements: plaque ‎index, ‎gingival index, ‎bleeding on probing, salivary flow ‎rate ‎and ‎salivary pH were recorded‎.‎ ‎Results. In the healthy groups: plaque index and salivary pH were ‎higher in smokers than non-smokers but with no ‎significant difference (P>0.05). While gingival index and salivary flow rate were ‎higher in smoker than non-smokers and with significant ‎difference (p<0.05). In the chronic periodontitis groups: plaque index, gingival index and salivary flow rate ‎were higher in the non-smokers than smokers and with ‎significant difference (p<0.05). While salivary pH was ‎higher in the non-smokers than smokers but with no ‎significant difference (P>0.05). Correlation between ‎weekly smoking hours with pH and salivary flow rate, in the ‎smoker healthy groups, showed ‎significant negative correlation, while plaque index showed ‎significant positive correlation at (p<0.05). But in the smokers with chronic periodontitis, only gingival index ‎significantly correlated with weekly smoking hours. Conclusion. Waterpipe smoking has a detrimental effect on the periodontium and overall oral health

Abstract

Aims: The present study aimed to investigate some biochemical (Lysozyme and Peroxidase enzymes) and immunological (S-IgA) changes in saliva of thalassemia major patients and the correlation of these changes with the oral health status measured by the dmft/DMFT (decay, missing, filling tooth index for deciduous and permanent dentition), plaque and gingival indices.Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in Ibn Al-Atheer Teaching Hospital in Mosul and involved (91) subjects. The study group (70 thalassemia major patients) and the control group (21 normal non-thalassemic subjects). The study group was divided into two subgroups (35 each) according to the history of disease. Data was collected from each patient including medical status and oral health status indices and saliva samples were collected from each patient and stored at -20 oC to be analyzed for salivary Lysozyme by lysoplate method, salivary Peroxidase activity and salivary secretary S-IgA by ELISA.Results: Showed that the dmft/DMFT plaque and gingival indices in thalassemia major patients were significantly higher (P < 0.001) than normal subjects. The salivary lysozyme in thalassemia major patients was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than normal subjects. The salivary peroxidase activity was nearly higher in thalassemic patients than normal subjects. The salivary S-IgA in thalassemic patients was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than normal subjects. Conclusions: The study showed a significant correlation between the changes in some of the salivary constituents and the high prevalence of dental caries, plaque and gingivitis in thalassemia major patients
