Species composition of fishes assemblage in shatt Al-Basrah canal, South of Iraq

Abstract

The fish assemblage structure in Shatt AL-Basrah canal was described during the period June 2008–June 2009. Two stations were chosen, the first at the upper reaches of the Canal south to the regulation Dam and the second station located near AL-Zubair Bridge. We collected 51 species belonging to Osteichthyes and two species to Chondrichthyes.The number of species collected was 38 species in both stations. The total number of individuals collected was 8216 in the first station and 2969 fish in the second station.The Similarity index in the species composition of the fish assemblage was 49% between the two stations. Diversity (H), Evenness (J) and Richness (D) of the fish assemble was respectively 2.57, 0.71, 4.63 in the first station .while at the second station was lower 2.06, 0.57, 4, 10 respectively.

اشتملت الدراسة الحالية على وصف تركيبة التجمع السمكي في قناة شط البصرة للمدة من حزيران 2008- حزيران 2009، تم اختيار محطتين شمال القناة تقع الأولى جنوب الناظم والثانية قرب جسر الزبير، تم صيد 53 نوع يعود 51 نوع منها إلى صنف الأسماك العظمية ونوعان منها إلى صنف الأسماك الغضروفية وبلغ عدد الأنواع المصادة 38 نوع في كلا المحطتين. وعلى أساس الوفرة بلغ العدد الكلي للأسماك التي صيدت في المحطة الأولى 8216 سمكة يقابلها 2969 سمكة اصطيدت من المحطة الثانية على مدار مدة جمع العينات. بلغت درجة التشابه الكلية في التركيب النوعي للتجمع السمكي بين المحطتين 49%، بلغت قيمة دليل التنوع (H) والتكافؤ(J) والغنى(D) للمحطة الأولى 2.57، 0.71، 4.63 على التوالي وللمحطة الثانية كانت اقل نسبيا" وبلغت 2.06، 0.57، 4.10 على التوالي.

Abstract

Three trace metals Cu, Pb and Zn at the region of Shatt Al-Basra canal in south of Hammer marsh, were determined monthly from Sep.2003 to Feb.2004 in water, surface sediments and two emerged aquatic plants (Phragmites australis and Typha domengensis) which were collected from four selected stations. Trace metal concentrations were high in the surface sediment with a clear local variation. While their values in the water samples were much lower than that found in the surface sediment, with clear local variations among the studied stations. P. australis showed its ability to accumulate higher concentrations of studied pollutants than T. domingensis and underground parts of both plants were accumulated higher concentrations than aboveground parts. The study of water samples and corresponding sediments from the canal near oil refinery discharging point showed that the area is polluted with different levels of Cu, Pb and Zn. Emergent aquatic plants P. australis and T. domingensis were good bioaccumulators and can be considered as an interesting candidate for potential use asbiomonitors and phytoremediate for such pollutants.
