Abstract

The generalization of DARCY’s law in 2.diemnsions has led to equations whichdescribe permeability of the soil as a symmetric tensor of second rank (1, 2). In seepageproblems it is common to define the GLOBAL coordinate axis to coincide with theprincipal directions of the permeability tensor, therefore, the cross product (off –diagonal) components (Kxy , Kyx) of the permeability tensor will be zero. It is thereforethe purpose of this research to show the influence of the off- diagonal terms of thepermeability tensor on the determined exit gradients behind a vertical sheet pileembedded in an anisotropic homogenous soil of finite depth. Also of interest is thederivation of an equation for the determination of exit gradients obtained from coordinatetransformations of composite function.

Abstract

The research presents an experimental study of the interaction between cavity and adjacent hydraulic structure in sandy soil. Experimental studies were performed to investigate the effects of the different factors (such as cavity locations and size of the cavity) on the quantity of the seepage, steady time and flow line . Different sizes and locations of the cavity are investigated in flow media. It was found the diameter of the cavity is an important parameter. Dimensional analysis techniques and (STATISTICA) program were used for finding new formula with based on the experimental data, which are used to compute the quantity of seepage. This formula was derived to predict the quantity of the seepage in terms of spacing between the sheet pile wall and center of the cavity in upstream and downstream zones, spacing between water level and center of the cavity in upstream and downstream zones.

يشمل البحث دراسة مختبريه لإيجاد التفاعل بين الفجوة والجدران الساندة المجاورة في الترب الرملية. انجزت الدراسة المختبرية لتخمين تأثيرات العوامل المختلفة (موقع الفجوة, قطر الفجوة) على كمية التسرب مع الزمن وخطوط الجريان. اقطار ومواقع مختلفة تم دراسة تأثيرها في وسط الجريان. وجد ان قطر التكهف هو اهم عامل. تقنية التحليل البعدي والبرنامج الاحصائي (STATISTICA) تم استخدامهم لإيجاد المعادلة الوضعية استنادا على البيانات المختبرية لحساب كمية التسرب . هذه المعادلة اشتقت لحساب كمية التسرب في صيغة المسافة بين الجدران الساندة ومركز التكهف في منطقة الجهد العالي والجهد الواطئ ,المسافة بين منسوب الماء ومركز التكهف في منطقة الجهد العالي والجهد الواطئ.

Abstract

This research describes the seepage characteristics of experimental model test of dam with cutoff located at different region (at dam heel, at mid floor of dam, and at dam toe). It is resting on sandy soil with cavity at different locations in X and Y directions (such as in Al-Najaf soil city). Thirty three model tests are performed in laboratory by using steel box to estimate the quantity of the seepage and flow lines direction. It was concluded that the best location of the cutoff wall is at the dam toe for model test with cavity ( Xc B = 0 and 0.5), but for model test with cavity ( Xc B ≥1), the best location of the sheet pile wall becomes at the dam heel. For negative location of the cavity, the best location of the sheet pile wall is at the middle of the floor dam.

Abstract

In this study, the strong and weak forms of Darcy flow equation has been derived. The final obtained equation is Laplace partial differential equation. For total head evaluation, Laplace equation is solved using exact solution depending on Fourier series and numerical solution depending on finite element method. A computer program has been developed in MATLAB program to solve the Laplace equation using both exact and finite element solutions and the seepage of water under sheet pile is taken as a case study. Different number of points and nodes has been selected for the two methods. It is shown that both exact and finite element solutions have a good match in distribution for the study area especially when the Fourier points are increased.

Abstract

The seepage phenomenon (uplift pressure - flow rate - exit gradient of hydraulic structures) is one of the main causes of failure or collapse of hydraulic structures, so it has been reduced using sheet piles under floor of hydraulic structures. In this study, effect of mutual interference piles were studied on seepage phenomenon by using finite elements program ANSYS. The results were verified with the practical results L-SAYED which given a good correlation. It was found that the use of the pile in the upstream reduced the uplift pressures by 8.36%, and the pile in the downstream increased it by 11.66%, the flow rate reduced by 66.8% and exit gradient of the hydraulic structures reduced by 28.28%.

Abstract

Series of laboratory tests have been carried out on one (single) circular and diaphragm cells of different width to height ratio (0.75, 1.00), to study the stability of cellular retaining structures in saturation soils. The tests include the following factors, such as the effect of berm ratios (back fill of cell) (0.2H, 0.4H) , embedment depth ratios (0.2H, 0.4H ), other factors such as cell width and soil type were studied too. Three types of soils are used subbase, sand passing sieve No.4 and river sand. Where used models statistically to find out relationship between the berm, embedment depth, and horizontal displacement after applying failure load .

أجريت سلسلة من الفحوصات المختبرية على خلايا دائرية وحجابيه بنسب عرض إلى ارتفاع مختلفة (75.0 ,0.1) لدراسة استقرارية المنشآت الحاجزة الخلوية في الترب المشبعة. الفحوص تتضمن العوامل التالية, أثر نسب الإملاء خلف الخلية (0.4H, 0.2H) , نسب عمق الدفن0.4H, 0.2H) ) , وعوامل أخرى كعرض الخلية وخواص التربة. استخدم ثلاثة أنواع من الترب الحصو الخابط , رمل مار على منخل رقم 4 و رمل النهر. حيث استخدمت موديلات إحصائية لإيجاد العلاقة بين الإملاء, عمق الدفن والإزاحة الأفقية بعد تسليط حمل الفشل.
