Abstract

This study was performed on 36 adult male skeleton, for assessment of vertebral column for each specimen. The thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and their superior and inferior surfaces were examined for the presence of the schmor’ls nodes, their frequency, localization, characterization and their relation to osteophyte changes of the spine. The study showed that schmorl’s nodes are found in frequency of 61% .and they are mainly found in lower thoracic and lumbar vertebrae The nodes are mainly localized on posterior third (71%) of vertebral end plates, ( 21% ) on middle third and only few nodes located on anterior third of vertebral end plates. Also the results apparently show that correlation of schmorl nodes with osteophyte changes of the spine is not significant. The study correlates these findings with the multiple causes of schmorl’s nodes
