SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE OCCURRENCE OF β-THALASSEMIA IN MOSUL

Abstract

Backgroundβ-thalassemia is found in Mediterranean, Saudia Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Yemen. Survey in Iraq showed that β-thalassemia trait is carried by 4.5-5% of the population.ObjectiveTo determine factors that is associated with thalassemia in Mosul district. Methods105 thalassemia blood transfusion dependent children with the age of 2.5–18 years attending Ibn Al-Atheer Teaching Hospital in Mosul city during 2005 were included in this study, 45 healthy subjects served as control. Blood groups, Hb, and PCV were evaluated. SI, TIBC, and TS levels were also determined.ResultsThe occurrence of homozygous β-thalassemia is significantly higher in the offspring of first cousin marriages."O" blood group represents a highest percentage (42.8%) among the thalassemic patients. Hb, PCV and TIBC were below the control measurements. Whereas SI and TS were above that of the controls.ConclusionsConsanguinity seems to be increasing the size of the disease due to the limited health education of the parents about the disease.Key wordsThalassemia, Hb, PCV, SI, TIBC, TS

Determination of some biochemical parameters in clinically healthy and anemic goats

Abstract

The study was conducted on 130 healthy and 72 affected with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) by used local breed goats to determine serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), unbound iron binding capacity (UIBC), copper concentration and transferrin saturation (TS%). The 130 normal goats (40 males and 90 females). while 72 diagnosed iron deficient anemic goats (18males and 54females), both groups aged 6 months- 4 years in Najaf governorate. Blood samples were collected from the jugular veins into plain tubes during October 2013 till February2014, and the separated sera were directly used for chemical investigation. Result showed in normal and iron deficient anemic goats; Serum iron concentration was 7-17.9 and 11.8±0.22, 1.2-6.9 and 4.3±0.17 respectively, TIBC 67.5-107.3 and 89.7±0.69, 67.3-265 and 112.4±4.35 respectively ,UIBC 59.1-94.9 and 78±0.69, 60.9-260 and 108.1±4.36 respectively, TS% 7.4-20 and 13.1±0.25, 0.90-10.1 and 4.1±0.23 respectively and serum copper 1.1-4.6 and 2.4±0.05, 0.7-3.0 and 1.7±0.06 respectively.However, There were a significant (P<0.05) decrease in serum iron, TS% and copper, while there was a significant increase (P<0.05) in serum TIBC and UIBC of IDA goats as compared with normal control. Also, a significant differences(P<0.05) between males and females, as well as, in subgroups of normal and anemic goats have been recorded . In conclusion the present data recorded reference ranges of some biochemical parameters in local breed goats with a significant differences between normal, anemic ,males and females, and in different physiologic status .

Abstract

This paper presents hybrid technique using two metahueristic methods; which are simulated annealing (SA) and tabu search (TS). The aim is to exhibit the facility of adaptive memory in tabu search method to resolve the long computation times of simulated annealing metaheuristic method. This can be done by keeping the best path which is found in each iteration. As a result, the proposed hybrid technique gives the optimum solution by finding the shortest path with minimum cost when applied on travelling salesman problem (TSP) since it reduces the time complexity by finding the optimum path with a few numbers of iterations when compared with SA and TS.

Abstract

High impedance fault HIF produced when an energized conductor falls and contact with an objects have high impedancelike: tree limb, concrete walls, or falls down to the ground. The importance of these undetectable faults isrepresent a safety hazard, also a risk of arcing that causes ignition of fires. This type of fault is cannotbe detected by overcurrent protections. The techniques of detecting HIFs are depending on harmonicanalysis of the line current.In this paper, aproposed techniqueuseddepending on themeasure of the 3rd harmonic.Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy controller is proposed and the rules are trained off-line. The practical results show the ability of the controller to detect and distinguish the HIF with high accuracy.The magnitude and angle of 3rd harmonic were 1% of fundamental and 800respectively. The experiment results obtained using the NI 6250 data acquisition board and Matlab real time toolbox.

Abstract

The aim of the present work was to determine the serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), unbound iron binding capacity (UIBC), transferrin saturation percentage (TS%) and Serum Copper in normal lactating and Ovine mastitis. The study was conducted on 50 clinically normal lactating and 50 ewes affected with staphylococcal mastitis (19 clinical and 31 subclinical), both groups aged 2-5 years in Salah Al-Din governorate. The blood samples were collected from jugular vein during the period October 2012 until April 2013. The separated sera were directly used for measurement of investigated biochemical tests. The results showed that the ranges and means ± SE of normal lactating and Ovine mastitis were as follows; serum iron 29.81-39. 63μmol /L and 33.38 ± 0.4 μmol /L, 8.76 - 34.11 μmol /L and 20.42 ± 0.98 μmol /L respectively, TIBC 44.7-79.89 μmol /L and 62.03 ±1.65μmol /L, 43.24 - 125.72 μmol /L and 91.24 ± 2.49 μmol /L respectively, UIBC 14.71 - 40.27 μmol /L and 28.57 ± 1.31 μmol /L, 13.41- 113.25 μmol /L and 66.54 ± 3.23μmol /L respectively, TS% 47.92 -71.79 and 55.08 ± 1.01, 14.1 - 65.76 and 26.73 ± 2.71 respectively, and serum copper 13.97 - 23.61 μmol /L and 17.99 ± 0.39μmol /L, 7.1 - 16.09 μmol/L and 11.8 ± 0.32 μmol /L respectively. However, significant (P<0.05) differences between clinically normal and ewes affected with mastitis were recorded in all the measured parameters. The present data records reference ranges and means ± SE of some biochemical parameters in normal lactating and Ovine mastitis with a significant differences between them.

اجريت الدراسة لتقدير تركيز حديد المصل ، القدرة الكلية للحديد المرتبط، الفدرة للحديد غير المرتبط ، نسبة تشبع للحديد الناقلونحاس المصل في النعاج الحلوب الطبيعية والمصابة بالتهاب الضرع . اجريت الدراسة على 05 نعجة مرضعة طبيعية و 05 نعجةمصابة بالتهاب الضرع ) 11 حالة حادة و 11 تحت السريري( ببكتريا المكورات العنقودية الذهبية في محافظة صلاح الدين. جمعتعينات الدم من الوريد الوداجي خلال الفترة بين تشرين الاول 2512 و نيسان 2511 . استعمل المصل مباشرة لقياس الصورةالكيموحيوية. اشارت النتائج الى ان المدى والمعدل والخطأ القياسي للنعاج الطبيعية والمصابة بالتهاب الضرع كما يلي: حديد– – ± 10.11 مايكرو مول / لتر و 25.02 9.. 5.0 مايكرو مول / و 9 ± 11.91 مايكرو مول / لتر و 11.19 المصل 21.91 0.98- ± 1.91 . مايكرو مول / لتر و 92.51 مايكرو مول / لتر على التوالي ، القدرة الكلية للحديد المرتبط .. 00 1.65 مايكرو مول / لتر120 مايكرو مول / لتر و – ..2 و 01.20 91.24 ± 2.94 - 10.. مايكرو مول / لتر على التوالي و القدرة للحديد غير المرتبط ، 11.21 مايكرو - ± 111.20 مايكرو مول / لتر و 99.00 1.11 مايكرو مول / لترو 11.01 ± 05.2 مايكرو مول / لتر و . 29.0 .- – ± 29.. 90 % و 1 ..9 1.51 % و 10.1 ± 1. % و 00.59 ..1 0.. مول / لتر على التولي، نسبة تشبع الحديد الناقل 1219.51 مايكرو - - .. 5.11 مايكرو مول / لتر و 1 ± 1.. 21.91 مايكرو مول / لتر و 11 %2 على التوالي ونحاس المصل . 11.1 ..5.12 مايكرو مول / لتر على التوالي . اضهرت النتائج فروقات معنوية ) ± مول / لتر، و 11.9 P ˂ 0.05 ( بين كل من النعاجالطبيعية والنعاج المصابة بالتهاب الضرع. تستنتج الدراسة وجود فروق معنوية بين النعاج الطبيعية والمصابة بالتهاب الضرع فيالمدى والمعدل لبعض المعايير الكيموحيوية.
