Abstract

This study was conducted to count the cytological parameters; total protein (TP), white blood cells count WBCs and differential (WBCs); from transtracheal aspirate (TTA) and microbial detection from thirty cats in Al-Qadisiyah province. Both genders were involved and the cats ranged in 1-3 years old. The mean total protein measured by the spectrophotometer was (89±0.04) mg/dl, mean WBCs was (925±0.7) cell/µl and the mean differential WBCs record 61% alveolar macrophages, 31% eosinophils and 8% neutrophils. Microbial investigation has revealed that respiratory tract of cats have no flora and we could not observe any respiratory infection in the captured cats; it may be related to the physiological and immunological adaptation of the respiratory system through the presence of the alveolar macrophage with a high percentage concerning other WBCs. There was no obvious regard to gender or age on these limitations.

Abstract

Serum Protein plays major role to maintain balance of blood, so total protein may be elevated ordecreased due to some pathological & physiological changes in human body during pregnancy period. On theother hand the serological diagnosis of antibodies level during pregnancy is usually based on the detection of IgGand IgM antibodies as markers for diagnosis. The aim of this study was to investigate some immunoparametersincluding IgM, IgG, and assay of TSP, TSA & TSG in pregnant women attending Maternity & Child Hospital inRamadi City, West of Iraq. Sera of 50 pregnant women were collected & quantitative assays by Single RadialImmunodiffusion test (Mancini test) for detection of (IgM & IgG) concentration & spectrophotometric method forTotal serum protein, Total serum Albumin & Total serum Globulin reader were achieved against these serumsamples.Serum immunoglobulin (IgM & IgG) were measured in 50 pregnant women. (22) with natural delivery &(28) Cesarean delivery pregnant women. The mean IgG level was increased in pregnant women aged under 25years, while IgM levels were markedly increased at (25-39) years. A total mean titer for IgG & IgM were found tobe 1006.2071± 408.12282 & 48.8571±28.81962 respectively.Total serum protein reports separate values for totalprotein , albumin & Globulin. Values of serum protein reflect high globulin concentration, while albuminconcentration in pregnant women recorded significant differences It is mean values for age group (15-24) & (25-39) years are 3.4479 ± .72373 & 3.0044±.33212 respectively. There was significant differences in albuminconcentration through age group in pregnant women. Most values of serum routine liver function tests duringnormal pregnancy remain below the upper normal limits in no pregnant women. When liver disease is suspected &considered pathologic further should prompt evaluation. Furthermore, IgG concentration was predominantlyincrease in their level during pregnancy in association with transported IgG through placenta to the fetus duringlate pregnancy period

الخلاصةأجریت هذه الد ا رسة لمعرفة بعض العوامل المناعیة في النساء الحوامل قبل الولادة وتضمنت جمع 50 عینة مصل من نساء حوامل دخلوا إلىردهة النسائیة في مستشفى النسائیة والأطفال التعلیمي في مدینة الرمادي في الشهر التاسع من الحمل وقد خضعت تلك العینات إلى مجموعة منفي تلك العینات بطریقة الانتشار المناعي المنفرد IgM و IgG الفحوصات المناعیة متضمنة التقدیر الكمي لت ا ركیز الأجسام المضادة المناعیةقد IgG وكذلك فحص كلا من مصل البروتین واللالبومین والكلوبیولین في تلك العینات. أظهرت النتائج بأن معدل ت ا ركیز الأجسام المضادة للنوع25 سنة كما كانت هناك فروق معنویة واضحة في نسبة واللالبومین بین تلك الفئات العمریة من - سجلت زیادة في مصل النساء الحوامل من عمر 39. 25- 15 و 39 - جهة أخرى سجل الكلوبیولین الكلي زیادة واضحة عن النسب الطبیعیة في مصول النساء في جمیع الفئات العمریة 25

Abstract

Background: Obesity is the fastest growing health-related problem in the world. It plays an affecting role in thebiochemistry of many serious systemic diseases like diabetes and CVD. Periodontitis appeared to have a reciprocalrelationship with both, obesity on one hand side and the serious systemic diseases on other hand.Aim of study: is to investigate the effect of obesity and periodontitis on the salivary flow and its uric acid and total protein.Material and method: Eighty one male, aged 30-40 y, systemically healthy, no smokers, having chronic periodontopathicinflammation(gingivitis and / or periodontitis), grouped in three according to BMI, each of 27; GI; normal weight, G2; preobese,and G3; obese. PL.I, GI, BOP, PPD, CAL were clinically recorded at the same hour of unstimulated salivacollection. Probing depth and attachment levels were arranged in scales.Result: Obese group showed significantly high scores of all periodontal data over other 2 groups. Pre-obese showed alsosignificant high scores on the normal weighted. Uric acid was insignificantly low in obese than other 2 groups, while thetotal protein, in obese was significantly higher than other 2 groups, as the salivary flow did. The differences in uric acidand total proteins values were insignificant between normal weights and pre-obese. A significant positive correlationhave been found among periodontal parameters, scale 1 PPD/CAL salivary flow, uric acid, total protein and obesity.Conclusion: Obesity is not only enhancing the severity of periodontopathy, but also modifies the chemical Constituents ofsaliva.

Abstract

The qualified subjects for this study included 33 patients with benign and malignant oral tumors aged 15-75 years and 31 matched age and gender healthy subjects used as control. Proteins measurements included total protein, albumin, globulines in sera and saliva samples, and immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM, IgA) in sera samples of control and patients. Meanwhile, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) was used to differentiate between protein patterns in both serum and saliva samples among the studied groups. The gel was also stained for glycoprotein to evaluate as well the changes in glycoprotein contents. For total protein, the results revealed a signifigant increase (P≤0.01) in both samples (serum and saliva) of patient group. Albumin concentration shows presence of a high significant decrease (P=0.001) in sera samples but a significant increase (P<0.05) in saliva of the patients group in comparison to that of control group. Immunoglobulins concentrations also show significant increase in patients group in comparison to control group. This study aimed to estimate salivary and serum proteins in oral cancer patients and in healthy control group to evaluate their role in diagnosis and prognosis of oral cancer

تضمنت المجموعة قيد الدراسة 33 مريضا (ذكور و اناث) مصابين بأورام الفم (الحميدة و الخبيثة)و باعمار 15-75 سنة, قورنت مع مجموعة السيطرةالمتكونة من 31 من الاشخاص الاصحاء (ذكور و اناث) و بنفس مديات الاعمار. تضمنت القياسات لمجاميع المرضى و الاصحاء مستوى البروتين الكلي و الالبومين و الكلوبيولينات في نماذج المصل و اللعاب, بينما تم قياس مستوى بروتينات المناعة (IgA, IgG, IgM ) في نماذج المصل فقط. في الوقت نفسه استخدمت تقنية الترحيل الكهربائي باستخدام هلام البولي اكريلامايد لتمييز البروتينات في نماذج المصل واللعاب للمجاميع قيد الدراسة بالاضافة الى متابعة متغيرات محتوى البروتينات السكرية في نماذج المصل واللعاب. اظهرت النتائج ومقارنة بمجموعة السيطرة (الاصحاء) وجود ارتفاع معنوي (P≤0.01 ) في مستوى البروتين الكلي لنماذج المصل و اللعاب, بينما اظهرت نتائج تركيز الالبومين انخفاضا معنويا (P=0.001 ) في نماذج المصل, و ارتفاعا معنويا (P<0.05 ) في نماذج اللعاب . اظهر تركيز بروتينات المناعة ارتفاعا معنويا (P<0.01 ) في مصل مجموعة المرضى مقارنة بمجموعة السيطرة(الاصحاء). تهدف هذه الدراسة الى قياس البروتينات في مصل ولعاب مرضى سرطان الفم و مقارنتها مع مجموعة السيطرة (الاصحاء) لتقدير دورها في تشخيص و تطور سرطان الفم.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseasesdue to defect in insulin secretion or action or both.Hyperglycemia in diabetes creates free radicals .These free radicals produce oxidative stress and thus debilitate the endogenous antioxidant defense system.If the amount of insulin available is insufficient, cells response badly to the effects of insulin or if the insulin itself is abnormal. The net effect is persistently elevating levels of blood glucose, low protein synthesis.The current study evaluate the biochemical changes in diabetes mellitus patients in using different medications and investigate the glutathione S-transeferase M1 gene deletion in different treatments. The present study was conducted on (75) diabetic patients, (25) of them were treated with insulin, (25) were using insulin and metformin and the last (25) were on metformin and glibinclimide .The study also included (25) apparently healthy subjects were taken as control group. The blood sampleswere collected from Merjan Teaching Hospital from November 2013 to April 2014.The total serum protein was measured by colorimetric method described by Gornall.LSD test showed that there was significant difference between insulin & metformin group and metformin &glibinclimide in total serum protein (p ≤0.05). Metformin &glibinclimide group was less mean difference with the control group. In the gene level of the study, genotyping of glutathione S-transferase mu 1gene by PCR were defined as GSTM1 and GSTM0 or deletion association to the present and absences of the guanine nucleotide in the gene sequence. There was statistically significant difference in the genotyping distribution and the frequency of GSTM0 among study groups were 44% for insulin and metformin group, 68% for metformin and glibinclimide, 44% insulin and 28% for control healthy group.there was significant decrease in serum total protein in diabetic patients. Genetic polymorphism of glutathione S-transferase mu 1gene may be considered as risk factor for both types of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Aims: To assess the effect of acute psychological stress on some salivary glands functions. Materials and Methods: Twenty-three undergraduate dental students participated in this study. They were asked to provide two samples of unstimulated whole saliva for 5 minutes, the first sample before amid- year oral academic examination and subsequently the second, one month later in a non stressful situation (after holiday break) as control group. Salivary flow in one minute was determined, in addition, total protein, albumin, uric acid and calcium levels in saliva were assessed using determination kits method from Biolabo (France). Results: The results showed a significant stress mediated decrease in the sali-vary calcium concentration (0.230.21 mmol/L) by -78.50% in comparison with non stressful condi-tion. Salivary flow level (0.62  0.28 ml /min) and albumin concentration (16.3913.69 mg/100ml) were decreased by (- 4.62% and -37.30% respectively), while uric acid (1.671.13 mmol/L) and total protein concentrations (1.030.69 g/100ml) were elevated by 9.56% and 10.60% respectively. Not all these changes were statically significant. Conclusions: These results suggest that the acute psychologi-cal stress exerts its influence on salivary composition and this will increase the value of saliva as dy-namic biological fluid in controlling the oral health.

Abstract

Background: Malnutrition influences the development of the teeth and the formation, function and secretion of thesalivary glands, which in turn influence susceptibility to dental caries and gingival disease. The aims of this study wereto assess the salivary antioxidants (vitamin A, C and E) levels as well as total protein and their relation to cariesseverity and gingival health status among mal- and well-nourished children.Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 60 children and they divided according to nutritional status (30malnourished and 30 well nourished). The 2000 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) growth charts wasused for assessment of nutritional status (height for age). The age was five years old. Caries severity (d1-4s) wasassessed according to Muhlemann (1976). Dental plaque recorded following the criteria described by Sillness andLöe (1964). The gingival index (GI) was used according to Löe and Sillness criteria (1963). Stimulated whole salivasamples were collected and chemically analyzed by using colorimetric method to determine the salivaryantioxidants (vitamin A, C and E) and total protein. All data were analyzed using SPSS version 18.Results: Results recorded a higher mean value of dmfs among malnourished in comparison to well nourished withstatistically highly significant difference (P< 0.001). According to grades of lesion severity, d4 was significantly thehigher among malnourished children (P< 0.001). Strong highly significant correlations were noticed between ds, dmfsand PI among malnourished and well nourished children. Significantly lower values of vitamins and total protein werenoticed among malnourished children compared to well nourished (P< 0.001). Negative highly significantcorrelations were found with all vitamins among malnourished children regarding caries-experience and GI.Conclusion: Childhood chronic malnutrition (stunting) is associated with salivary hypofunction. This may act as a riskfactor for dental caries and gingival disease in the target group.

Abstract

The aim of study: isto investigate the inter linking between obesity and gingivitis by screening the salivary uric acid and total protein.Material and method: Control healthy periodontal and systemically-normal weight,27 male, ( CG), gingivitis–normalweight, systemically healthy(GN) 16 male, Gingivitis-overweight-systemically healthy(GOV) 14 male).and Gingivitisobese-systemically healthy(GO)12 male, aged 30-40 y, no smokers, Their weight measured according to BMI.Clinical data were recorded according to PL.I, GI, BOP, at the same hour of unstimulated saliva collection.Results: Obese subjects showed increased PL.I, G.I, BOP scores and high significant increase of salivary total protein.BOP; showed significant increase in bleeding sites as the Body Mass Index goes up. Uric acid showed, always,negative correlation with the totality of gingival inflammation parameters, they were significant only with normalweight subjects.Conclusion: Total protein. Appeared significantly positive correlated to gingivitis more than to the obesity. While Uricacid correlated insignificantly negative with the gingivitis but not to the increased body weight.The increased bodyweight also positively correlated to the gingival inflammation, these results could say that gingivitis modifies the salivarychemicals while the obesity enhances gingivitis

Abstract

Background: The concentration of some components of saliva may be associated with certain systemic illnesses,reflecting the hormonal, immunological, neurological, emotional, nutritional and metabolic states of the patient. Theaim of this work was to assess salivary flow rate, and to evaluate saliva samples for levels of salivary total protein,glucose, and alpha amylase, in diabetics type II and healthy subject in both genders.Subjects and methods: Unstimulated salivary flow rate, salivary total protein, glucose, and amylase were measuredin 90 subjects, 60 with diabetes mellitus type II (30 controlled and 30 uncontrolled diabetic patients) and in 30 healthysubjects.Results: Significant difference in salivary flow rate in diabetic patient when compared with healthy subject. Thefinding showed no significant differences between salivary total proteins in all groups. Significant difference in salivaryglucose and amylase concentration was found between the healthy subjects and type 2 diabetic patients.According to the gender, there were only significant differences between male and female in salivary flow rate forhealthy subjectsConclusions: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have higher concentration of salivary glucose and lower value ofsalivary flow rate and amylase. No significant difference was seen in protein value in all groups

Abstract

Background: α-L-Fucose is a methyl pentose sugar similar to L-galactose except for the loss of alcohol group oncarbon number 6. The objective of this study is to evaluate the biochemical and antioxidant effect of intracrevicularinjection of fucose into rabbits periodontium, throughout measuring the levels of total protein (TP), total fucose (TF),protein bound fucose PBF) , Malondialdehyde (MDA) , and vitamin C in sera of fucose injected rabbit groups.(Materials and Methods: The existing study was carried out on 55 male rabbits and were divided randomly into threegroups ; first group was injected with 50μl of 150mM fucose solution into gingival sulcus ; second group was injectedwith 50 μl of normal saline ; while the third group was not received any injection ( normal group) .Blood sampleswere collected from injected groups at time intervals of 1, 3 ,24 ,72, and 168 hours after injection, for measuring ofserum TP, TF, , PBF , MDA, and vitamin C and compared with normal group.Results: The results showed a significant increase in the mean concentration of TF and PBF reaching its maximumvalue 3hrs after injection, then it decline until reached its normal value 168 hours after injection, whereas serum totalprotein increased significantly only 3 hours after injection. Also serum MDA level did not change after injection, whileserum vitamin C increased immediately after fucose injection, even 72 hours after injection.Conclusion: Intracrevicular injection of α-L- Fucose has an observable effect on TF and PBF this may give anindication about its effect on periodontal tissue and has a role in the body defence against oxidative stress,throughout increasing the production of vitamin C.
