Abstract

AbstractPeriodontitis is a persistent bacterial infection causing chronic inflammation inperiodontal tissues. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common metabolic diseasethat is associated with increased prevalence and severity of periodontitis. Our aim is to evaluate periodontal treatment needs of type 2 diabetic Iraqi patientsaccording to the age and the duration of DM.One hundred and seventy one type 2 diabetic Iraqi patients were enrolled in thisstudy. Recording of gender, age, and duration of DM was done. Periodontalexamination to evaluate treatment needs (TN) was performed by using communityperiodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN), Scoring for each patient was done bydividing his mouth into six sextants.CPITN showed a variation in the distribution of the patients according to age. Inthe age category (30-39) years; code 0 and code 1 represented 23.6 % and 59.8 % ofthe sextants respectively. Concerning treatment needs, only 11.8 % of patients did notneed any treatment (TN 0). In the age category (40-49) years; code 1 was the mostfrequent code and represented 61.5% of the sextants . All patients in this age categoryneed a sort of treatment . In the age categories (50-59) years and (60-69) years; code 3represented 21.8% and 30.6% of the sextants respectively and TN3 represented 50%and 49.2% of the patients respectively. In this study, when the duration of DM is 1-5years, code 3 represented only 13.6% of the sextants and periodontal treatment needsTN3 was 26.3% of patients while code 3 reached 26% of the sextants and TN3represented 52.7% of the patients when the duration of DM was > 5 years. In conclusion periodontal treatment needs of type 2 diabetic patients became morecomplicated if the patients were older and the duration of DM was longer.

Abstract

Abstract:Objective(s): This study carried out to evaluate the severity of dental caries and treatment needs among some Iraqi children, aged (5) years old in Baghdad. Methods: The sample was selected randomly. The examination of the oral cavity was based on diagnostic criteria marked by the World Health Organization (1987).Results: The study demonstrated a high prevalence of dental caries (81.20 %), gender difference was not found (P>0.05). The means of dmft and dmfs were found in the present study to be (5.11 ± 0.17, 9.62 ± 0.42 respectively) Results showed that ds fraction constituted the major part of dmfs value followed by ms, while fs fraction reached zero. Concerning ds gender differences was statistically highly significant (P<0.01). Posterior teeth were more susceptible to dental caries, than the anterior teeth. As the occlusal surface was the most affected surface followed by proximate surface. The dental treatment needs were high as 72% of children needed one surface restoration, while extraction (11%) was found to be the lowest need. Conclusion: The severity of dental caries was very high in primary dentition. The tooth susceptibility to dental caries in lower posterior teeth was higher than upper. While the picture was differ in anterior teeth.keywords: dental caries, treatment needs, 5 year old

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate dental problems of diabetic adult patients in Mosul City center, to find if there is any variation between age and sex groups and to determine the periodontal treatment needs of the patients. A sample of 194 adult diabetic patients (90 males, 104 females) divided into 6 age groups were examined using plaque and gingival indices by Löe and Silness (1967), Ramfjord calculus index (1959) and Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) (1997). The results showed that the mean plaque and gingival indices for the total sample were increasing with age with highly statistically significant difference with no sex variation. Concerning Ramfjord calculus index, calculus became the most prevalent with very high means for 20–29 years old and above for both sexes, CPITN revealed that healthy sextants exhibited a very low mean of 0.8 for the youngest age group, bleeding on probing was highest in this age group with a mean of 3.4, pockets of 4–5 mm appeared at age 20–29 years and it increases with increasing age. The results revealed that the total sam-ple needed oral hygiene instruction (100%), while prophylaxis was needed in 55.56–100%, surgical intervention and complex care were needed for old ages.
