Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACK GROUND:Children are not merely little adults, and the diseases they have are not merely variants of adult diseases (1,2). Pediatric neoplasm as a group causes more deaths in children than any other disease (2) .Histologically many of the malignant pediatric tumors are unique, with primitive (embryonal) microscopic appearance and exhibit features of organogenesis specific to the sites of tumor origin, so they are frequently designated as blastomas (1,2) .We managed to collect- 175 - cases of solid pediatric tumorsOBJECTIVE:1-To identify different histopathological types of solid pediatric tumors .2-To find out their relative frequencies ,sites , age &sex distribution .3-To compare our results with others.METHODS:This is a Prospective study conducted During a period of one year from July 2003 through August 2004; (175) biopsies of children in Mosul with solid tumors were Collected. The surgical specimens were collected from; Al-Salaam teaching hospital, Al-Zahrawi teaching hospital, Al-khansa teaching hospital and few private laboratories.RESULT:There were 92 cases (52.57%) of benign tumors and 83 cases of malignant tumors (47.4%).The leading malignant tumors were Lymphomas 20 cases (24.09%), followed by CNS tumors 14 cases (16.8%)CONCLUSION:1-Benign tumors are more frequent than malignant ones, with hemangiomas being the prevailing one.2-Lymphomas constitute the commonest malignant tumors with predominance of non Hodgkin variety.3-Among the reported tumors with noticeable rise in relative frequency are CNS tumors and Retinoblastomas. This rise may be due to genuine increase in incidence.

Abstract

Background:Breast carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor and the leading cause of carcinoma death in women, with more than 1,000,000 cases occurring worldwide annually.(1) as a matter of fact , the mortality rate for breast carcinoma changed very little from the 1930s to the early 1990s, because of the combined action of earlier diagnosis and improved therapy .
Materials and methods: The prospective study included 500 cases of breast carcinoma who went total mastectomy , between October 2006- April 2007, where taken from private pathology laboratory , sections(4microns) are taken and stained with H&E stain and over-reviewed.
Results: Clinicopathological analysis of the 500 cases of breast carcinoma, including the age, clinical presentation, the site of the tumor, the mammography results, the microscopic morphology, the stage and the grade of the tumor. The age in relation to the morphological classification also analyzed.
Conclusion: The commonest breast carcinoma in women is invasive ductal carcinoma, followed by lobular carcinoma, with mean age 44.5 year, mainly in the left breast, and that mammography approach is so useful in early detection of breast carcinoma.

Abstract

Background: Oral tumors are one of the most challenging tumors regarding their good prognosis in early diagnosis and very difficult control in advancing stages. Objectives: To study the prevalence, types and clinical presentation of oral tumors in comparison to other oral lesions among patients attending ENT clinic.Al-Kindy Col Med J 2008 Vol.5(1) 1 1 Original ArticleMethods: This study included 534 patients with differentoral complains attending ENT clinics in AI-YarmoukTeaching Hospital, and AI-Kindy Teaching Hospital -Baghdad, in the period from 1st jan1999 till 31th des 2006 (8years interval). Results: The results of this study showed that the prevalence of malignant lesions was 13.5% (72 out of 534); the males constitute 59.7 % of them. Premalignant lesions constitute only 3.9% (21 out of 534) of patients; the males constitute 66.7 % of them. Benign lesions in 8.6% (46 out of 534); the males constitute 69.6 % of them. Other lesions constitute 74% (395 out of 534); the males constitute 65.8 % of them. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor (found in 71% of malignant lesions). Conclusions: Most patients are males and the most common manifestation is sore throat. The most common sign of presentation is swelling and the most common histological type of malignant tumors is squamous cell carcinoma (71%). These patients usually attend ENT clinic seeking for simple therapy, we see that it’s the job of the otolaryngologist to diagnose those patients early which has a major influence on prognosis.Key words:

Abstract

Objective: Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of soft tissue tumors to assess the value of these techniques in verifying the primary diagnosis and their classification. Methods: A prospective study of 93 consecutive soft tissue biopsies that reached the department of histopathology, central labs, Dohuk, and application of immunohistochemical markers on 27 biopsies. Results: Out of 93 soft tissue tumors, 70 (75.2%) were benign with mean age 27.6 y. and 23 cases (24.8 %) were malignant with mean age 39.1 y.. Immunohistochemistery was performed in 27 cases; 21 (77.7%) cases of malignant tumors and 6 (22.3%) benign cases. The most common benign tumors were Lipoma, Haemangioma, Neurofibroma, while malignant muscle tumors (leiomyosarcoma and Rhabdomyosarcoma) and malignant round cell tumors (Ewing’s sarcoma/ PNET) were the major groups .Conclusion: High quality H and E stained section, remain the best method for establishing the primary diagnosis of soft tissue tumors, but immunohistochemical examination proved extremely helpful in sub classifying them, where 7 out of 9 cases of gastrointestinal tumors (GISTs) showed strong immunoreactivity with (c – kit proteins) CD117, CD34, while other (non GISTs) tumors were negative.

Abstract

Background: Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein hormone, which consists of two polypeptide subunits (alpha and beta), produced by syncytial trophoblast cells of the placenta during pregnancy. Ectopic HCG production occurs in many tumors including breast tumor. Objectives: The objective of the study is to investigate the expression of β–HCG in breast tumor and its correlation with pathological prognostic factors (age, tumor type, site, size, histological grade, lymphocytic infiltration, vascular invasion and lymph node involvement). Methods: A total of 44 breast tumors were selected, consisting of eight benign lesions (Fibrocystic disease in four cases and fibroadenoma in the rest) and 36 malignant breast tumors (invasive ductal carcinoma (21 cases) all of not-otherwise-specified type (NOS), in situ ductal carcinoma (6 cases), invasive lobular carcinoma (6 cases) and in situ lobular carcinoma (3 cases). Results: β-HCG expression was found in 6 of 36 malignant breast tumors (16.7%). None of the benign breast lesions showed β-HCG expression. High expression of β-HCG is seen more frequently in infiltrative ductal carcinoma with higher-grade tumor and in old age group (≥50 years). Conclusion: It was concluded that high expression of b-HCG is seen more frequently in infiltrative ductal carcinoma with higher grade. There was a high b-HCG expression in tumors more than or equal to 5-cm diameter.Key words: Breast tumors, b-HCG

Abstract

The amount of protein in the serum depends on the balance between the rate of its synthesis, and that of its catabolism or loss. Abnormal metabolism may result from nutritional deficiency, enzyme deficiency, abnormal secretion of hormones, or the actions of drugs and toxins. Renal cancer is the third most common malignancy of the genitourinary system, and accounts for 3% of adult malignancies globally. Total serum proteins were measured in malignant kidney tumor, benign kidney tumors, and non tumoral kidney diseases patient groups, as well as in healthy individuals. A significant decrease (p< 0.001) of total serum protein levels in patients with malignant kidney tumors when compared with those of benign tumors, non tumoral diseases, and healthy individuals. The lowest serum protein levels were found in patients with stage IV, regardless their genders. Analysis of total serum proteins using PAGE revealed clear differences in the number and shape of the bands in patients with different kidney diseases compared with healthy controls.

Abstract

Background: There are many risk factors that accentuate wrinkling like age, sex, occupation and smoking. From our clinical observation we noticed that, patient with skin malignancy are less liable to wrinkling. Objectives: To test the assumption whether skin wrinkling is protective against skin cancer or not? Patients & Methods: A case-control study was conducted in Department of Dermatology and Venereology in Baghdad teaching hospital in period from April 2002 through March 2003 on 54 patients with various skin tumors, and 108 patients as a control group, Socio-demographic information and full dermatological examination was done. Facial wrinkles were examined and measured according to wrinkles score in the group. Then we simplify these score into: superficial, (I, II), medium (III, IV) and deep wrinkles (V, VI). Result: The frequency of skin tumors were as follow; basal cell carcinoma (74.07%), squamous cell carcinoma (11.11%), baso-squamous cell carcinoma, (5.5%) kerato-acanthoma (5.5%) and solar keratosis (3.7%). The commonest age group affected by skin tumors were from 50-79 years and the commonest skin type in cases and controls were skin type III (P>0.05). All skin tumors were more common in males than females (P>0.05). Outdoor activity was more in patients with tumor, while control group had nearly equal outdoor and indoor activity (P<0.05).Patients with superficial wrinkles more commonly affected with skin tumors than those with deep wrinkles, while comparison group had more medium and deep wrinkles. So whenever there was increase in severity of wrinkle, there was decrease in frequency of malignancy. Conclusion: The present work had confirmed a negative association between wrinkling score and the frequency of skin tumors. Smoking might indirectly protect against basal cell carcinoma. Key words: Facial wrinkling, tumors, smoking.

Abstract

Background :The retroperitoneal tumors is usually confined to lesions arising from tissues (muscles, fat, lymph nodes, nerves, and, developmental remnant) of this compartment but excluding origin from the retroperitoneal organs (panaceas, kidney, ureters and adrenals). The aim of the study is to focus a light on the types of retroperitoneal tumors, ways of the investigations and the presentations. Methods :A prospective review study of 25 patients with retroperitoneal tumors has been collected in the Medical City Teaching Hospitals During the period between Jan 2001 to Mar 2004. The data included age, gender, risks factors, clinical presentations, diagnostic modalities and results of histopathology. Results :14 males (56%) and 11 females (44%_ patients. The highest incidence of patients were in the (51- 60 years) age group (10/25, 40%). The most common presenting feature was abdominal mass (20/25, 80%). u/s and CT scan were the most reliable investigations in the diagnosis. The most common tumors were sarcomas (15/25, 60%) and lymphomas (5/25, 20%). Conclusion :Although retroperitoneal neoplasms account for 0.1 - 0.2% of all malignancies (s), it seems that from our findings most of the tumors were malignant, where the sarcoma represents the common tumor among them, the presentations and the diagnostic modalities especially u/s and CT have a similarity with most of the studies reviewed.Key words :Retroperitoneal tumors, types, presentations.

Abstract

Background: Salivary tumors are uncommon, being of low incidence worldwide. This study aimed to assess casescollected in this series of salivary gland tumors in regard to histopathological typing, in relation to age, siteand gender.Materials and methods: This is a retrospective study; cases were collected from public and private laboratories. Atotal number of 171 cases were collected. The slides were reviewed and reclassified for histopathological typingaccording to WHO classification 2005.Results: Benign tumors were more common than malignant tumors. The most common histological type was benignmixed tumor, followed by Warthin’s tumor. The most common malignant tumor was adenoid cystic carcinoma. Onehundred twenty three cases out of 171 cases developed in the parotid, the most common site for salivary tumors, with a low risk for malignancy, while minor salivary glands show higher risk for malignancy. Salivary tumors developedin females more than males with a ration 1.4:1, the peak incidence in the sixth and seventh decades for both benignand malignant tumors. There was no significant difference between right and left tumors, bilateral tumors wereuncommon. Conclusions: The results of this study reveal similarity to the findings of other studies on salivary tumors done in Iraq andthe neighboring countries
