Abstract

Dental laboratories are commonly confronted with individuals seeking alterations on their complete or partial dentures. Some of these problems may not be related procedure followed to produce such dentures in the dental laboratories, rather they may be the result of improper use or even unrevealed certain dental history by the patient due to lack of knowledge or just as a matter of careless.
Identifying the most common problems may help both technicians and patients avoiding repeating of casting procedure and costs as well as unnecessary efforts. The most common problem exhibited by wearers of complete and partial denture are loose dentures and lack of retention.Gum diseases are only found in patients wearing complete dentures (4.3%).

Abstract

Background: Using of denture adhesives improved the retention and stability of complete denture, so it is important for the success of complete denture treatment when it is used according to its indications.Materials and methods: This project was carried out in an attempt to measure and compare the effectiveness of denture adhesives (Boots, Super corega, and Lacalut denture adhesive) in a well fitting maxillary complete denture at various time intervals. The retention of well fitting maxillary complete denture with saliva alone and with the use of denture adhesives at different time intervals was measured as a resistance to dislodgment using loading apparatus. Results: The study revealed that there is a highly significant improvement in the retention of a well fitting maxillary complete denture after using any one of the three types of the denture adhesive. Statistically the three type of denture adhesives used in this study have approximately the same effectiveness with slightly difference in the time of action. Conclusion: The use of any type of these denture adhesives that were accepted by patient (whether vegetable gum or synthetic polymer, powder or paste) can improve the retention of the complete denture.

Abstract

Background: Thermoplastic non –metal clasp denture became recently the most attractive option for patients dueto its esthetic outcome and many other advantages. The chemical immersed denture cleanser is the most widelyused method by the patients to maintain clean and healthy denture , but the use of such cleanser may haveharmful effect on the denture base materials .This study aimed to evaluate some physical and mechanicalproperties of one of the thermoplastic denture base materials which is (nylon) compared with those belong toconventional heat cured acrylic and to observe the effect of two prepared denture cleansers ( 4% oxalic acid ,4%tartaric acid ) in addition to one commercial denture cleanser (lacalut dent) on the indentation hardness , flexuralstrength , flexibility , surface roughness and color stability of nylon and conventional heat cured acrylic.Materials and method: Two hundred and sixty specimens (130 nylon and 130 acrylic) were prepared ,60 specimens(30 nylon ,30 acrylic ) were used to test each of the properties mentioned above except an 80 specimens were used(40 nylon ,40 acrylic ) to test flexural strength and flexibility. Results: The result obtained in the present study showed high significant difference between nylon and conventionalheat cured acrylic in four properties which were: indentation hardness , flexural strength , flexibility and color stability, with no difference in the surface roughness .Furthermore oxalic acid and tartaric acid cleansers significantlydecrease the indentation hardness and flexural strength of conventional heat cured acrylic while lacalut dent didn’tsignificantly affect those properties of acrylic, also all the three cleansers didn’t affect the indentation hardness andflexural strength of nylon .oxalic acid and tartaric acid cleansers significantly decreased the flexibility of nylon whilelacalut dent didn’t significantly changed this property. All the three cleanser had no effect on the flexibility ofacrylic. All the three cleanser had no effect on the surface roughness or color stability of nylon and acrylic. Conclusions: It can be concluded that nylon had better flexibility and translucency than conventional heat curedacrylic while conventional heat cured acrylic had better indentation hardness and flexural strength than nylon.Regarding surface roughness the two polymers show no significant difference between them. There were an adverse effect of the prepared denture cleansers which contain isopropyl alcohol on indentationhardness and flexural strength of conventional heat cured acrylic , it decreased both those properties , so it isadvised not to use solution containing alcohol as acrylic denture cleanser also it is advised not to use it withnylon denture because it decreased its flexibility. Lacalut dent which is an oxygenating commercial denturecleanser, had no adverse effects on both polymers used in the study, so it can be used safely with them

Abstract

The influence of fiber orientation and water absorption on fatigue crack growth resistance for cold cure acrylic (PMMA) reinforced by chopped and woven -glass-fibers were investigated. A weight of 2 g for chopped fibers and the same weight for woven -glass-fibers (one layer) were used to prepare samples. Some of these samples would storage in dry condition; the others were immersed in water for 15 days. Fatigue test was carried out. The results shows that, for PMMA, the initial bending stress for dry specimen was 3.392 N/cm2 and the number of cycles were 1364, the initial bending stress for wet samples was 4.20 N/cm2, and the number of cycles was 2411. The samples would cut in two pieces because of the cracks would propagated fast during the test. Reinforcement PMMA with different kinds of glass fibers would increase the initial bending stresses for all specimens. The cracks would appear slowly during the test, and the specimens will not separate during the test except the samples which reinforced by Woven-Glass-Fibers.

Abstract

Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of two denture adhesives on incisal bite force until denture dislodgement without and with the adhesive. This in-practice study assessed also patients’ perception regarding the use of adhesive. Materials and Methods: A total of 6 patients )2 men, 4 women( who wore complete maxillary and mandibular dentures were tested for denture performance both without and with denture adhesive. A locally constructed digital biting force device was used to measure the incisal bite force. Two adhesives pastes )Kin oro and Bony plus( were used in the study. Patients were asked to bite on the digital biting force device and the readings of incisal bite force were recorded. Patient perceptions )instant perception and delayed perception( after 1 week of using the denture adhesive were also assessed by a questionnaire and analyzed for denture performance on chewing and mastication, retention and fitness, confidence, comfort, and speaking. Results: The result showed that denture adhesives improved the incisal bite force of complete denture wearers significantly. The incisal bite force )in kg( )mean : without adhesive 1.78, with Kin oro 3.04, and with Bony plus 3.21(. There was an improvement in chewing and mastication, retention and fitness, confidence, comfort, and speaking after using both types of denture adhesives. Conclusions: The use of denture adhesive was found to be significantly effective in improving the incisal bite force of complete dentures until the dislodgement of upper denture. Bony plus paste adhesive was found to be more effective than Kin oro paste. Subjectively, the patients reported an improved perception of denture performance and that the use of adhesive provided greater confidence when using the prosthesis
