Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of preoperative single dose of Dexamethasone on postoperative morbidities in children undergoing tonsillectomy. This is a prospective study considering 90 children with chronic tonsillitis who underwent tonsillectomy between June 2010 and December 2010 at the Department of Otolaryngology in Al-Diwaniah Teaching Hospital in Al-Diwaniah city, Iraq. Compared with placebo, Dexamethasone group have lower percentage of post tonsillectomy morbidities (pain, postoperative nausea & vomiting and uvular edema) but without statistical significant. In conclusion, there is no statistical beneficial effect of preoperative dexamethasone on the postoperative morbidities in children undergoing tonsillectomy.

Abstract

In this study 15 rabbits were divided into three groups ,each group contain five rabbit were submitted to surgical section in the skin layer 3-5 cm long after anasethesia and cleaning the part from the hair by sheaving . The surgical section was made by scable and then the wound sutured by silk band 2.5 cm and then administrated the dexamethasone 1 mg / Kg body weight of animals of second and third grougs of this study . After that the skin spicemen were taken for histopathological sections to preperd slid. The first group was considered as control with no administrated of dexamthasone , the second group treated as 1 mg / Kg body weight dexamthasone and sections were taken after 7th days , the third group were also treated with dexamthasone at the 1 mg /Kg and the skin sample were taken after 14 th days. The present study it was found that dexamthasone have no effect on the wound healing after 7th days or 14th days but the collagenization , epithelization and fibroblast content were less in the dexamthasone group compered with control group . The vasicularity and the degree of inflammatory cells were more intense in the dexamthasone group compared with control group.

تضمنت هذه الدراسة على 15 أرنب تم تقسيمها عشوائيا الى ثلاث مجاميع كل مجموعة تتضمن خمسة ارانب خضعت للقطع الجراحي في طبقة الجلد وكان طول الجرح ( 3 - 5 ) سم بعدما تم تخدير الحيوان وتنظيف المنطقة من الفرو . تم قطع الجلد بواسطة المشرط المعقم بعدها تم خياطة الجرح بواسطة خيوط سلك قياس 2.5 سم وتم حقن عقار ديكساميثازون بجرعة1 مغم / كغم من وزن الحيوان . اخذت عينات من الجلد إلى التقطيع النسيجي حيث اعتبرت المجموعة الاولى مجموعة السيطرة اما المجموعة الثانية حقنت حيواناتها بمادة الديكساميثازون واخذت المقاطع النسيجية بعد مرور 7 ايام و المجموعة الثالثة اخذت المقاطع النسيجية بعد مرور 14 يوم . اظهر الفحص النسيجي ان العقار ليس له تاثير ايجابي على التئام الجروح سواء كانت بعد 7- 14 يوم ووجد ان محتوى مكونات الالتئام يكون من الكولاجين والخلايا الطلائية والخلايا الليفية وكثافة الخلايا الالتهابية تكون اقل في المجموعة التي حقنت بالعقار منه في مجموعة السيطرة .

Induction of parturition in Iraqi cows by using ergometrine, dexamethasone and estrumate

Abstract

The study was conducted on 35 pregnant Iraqi cows at gestation period ranged from 260-265 days depending on their date of services. This study was performed in two regions from Baghdad province (Al-Thahab Al-Abiad and Al-Nahrawan villages) from 2009-2011, there ages ranged from 3-6 years and were divided randomly into three groups according to the type of treatment. 1st group (11 cows) were injected with 750 µg (3 ml) of estrumate intramuscular (IM) in single dose .The 2nd group (13 cows) injected with 40 mg of dexamethasone (IM) in one dose only. The 3rd group (11 cows) injected with 500µg of ergometrine (IM). The results revealed that the responsive cows were 7 (63.6%), 3 (100%) and 8 (72.7%) in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd groups respectively, and their result were recorded superior significant (P<0.01) for group 2 compared with group 1 and 3, also the results recorded significant (P<0.01) in group 2 compared with another groups (1, 3) related with duration from injection of treatment to induction of calving. Retention of fetal membranes was recorded 28.5% in all animals and the occurrence of dystocia (for many causes) was 28.6%, while the viability of calves was 89.6% (alive calves) and 10.4% of dead calves. We concluded that using of dexamethasone, estrumate and ergometrine was safe and effective for induction of parturition in Iraqi cows

شملت الدراسة 35 بقره بفترة حمل تراوحت من 260-265 يوم شخصت بالاعتماد على تاريخ التسفيد وقد اجريت الدراسة في محافظة بغداد (في قريتي الذهب الابيض والنهروان) للفترة من 2009-2011 ،تراوحت اعمار هذه الابقار بين 3-6 سنوات وقسمت عشوائيا الى ثلاثة مجاميع علاجية ، المجموعة الاولى ضمت 11بقرة حقنت بالعضلة 750 مايكروغرام (3مل) استروميت وبجرعة واحدة فقط ،المجموعة الثانية ضمت 13 بقرة تم حقنها بجرعة 40 ملغم من الدكساميثازون بالعضل وبجرعه واحدة ايضا ،اما المجموعة الثالثة )11 بقرة( فقد حقنت 500 مايكروغرام من الاركومترين بالعضل .اضهرت النتائج ان الابقار المستجيبة كانت 7 (63.6%) ،13 (100%) و8 (72.7%) في المجاميع الاولى والثانية والثالثة على التوالي ،وكانت الاستجابة تصب لصالح المجموعة الثانية وبمستوى معنوية 0.01 مقارنة مع المجموعتين الاولى والثالثة ،كما ان النتيجة كانت تصب لمصلحة المجموعة الثانية وبمستوى معنوية 0.01 مقارنة مع المجموعتين الاولى والثالثة بالنسبة لفترة الاستجابة (الفترة من حقن العلاج الى وقت حدوث الولادة ). كانت نسبة عسر الولادة (لاسباب مختلفة ) 28.6% ونسبة احتباس المشيمة 28.5% لجميع الحيوانات ،اما حيوية المواليد فكانت 89.6% (للمواليد الحية) و10.4% (للمواليد الميتة). نستنتج من ذلك ان استخدام الدكساميثازون ،الاستروميت والاركومترين كان امنا وفعالا لاحداث الولادة في الابقار العراقية.

Abstract

study was conducted to evaluate the usage of dexamethasone (Dx) in the treatment of liver function tests in experimental paraquat (PQ)- induced oxidative stress in male albino rats. Three groups of rats were subjected to this trial, control, PQ group (50 mg/ kg orally) and PQ with Dx (50 mg/ kg orally, 4 mg/ kg ip. Respectively)daily throughout the 15 days. Results revealed that treatment with PQ caused a mortality rate in a ratio of 30%,significantly increased (p≤0.05) of glucose, cholesterol, bilirubin concentrations and alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and amylase activities but the concentrations of both triglycerides and serum proteins were reduced compared with control whereas the treatment of PQ- treated rats with Dx decreased mortality rate (30%) and corrected the activity of serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase enzymes whereas Dx treatment induced an elevation in amylase activityin addition to the elevation of concentrations of total cholesterol, total protein and albumin in comparison with values of PQ- treated rats, Dx did not affect the concentration of glucose. In conclusion, the treatment of PQ- induced toxicity with Dx in rats was efficient in correction of most liver function tests.

اجريت الد ا رسة الحالية لتقييم تأثير الديكساميثازون في تصحيح بعض معايير وظائف الكبد المضطربةج اّ رء التسمم التجريبي بالبا ا ركوات والمحدث في ذكور الجرذان البيضاء. شممت التجربة استخدام ثلاث مجاميعBas.J.Vet.Res.Vol.11,No.2,201263من ذكور الجرذان هي عمى التوالي، السيطرة، مجموعة البا ا ركوات ) 50 ممغم/ كغم عن طريق الفم(، مجموعةالبا ا ركوات مع الديكساميثازون ) 50 ممغم/ كغم عن طريق الفم و 4 ممغم/ كغم في غشاء الخمب( اذ دامت فترةالمعاممة 15 يوما. بينت نتائج التحميل الإحصائي أن المعاممة بالبا ا ركوات قد أدت إلى نسبة هلاكات بمغت30 % فضلا عن زيادة معنوية في ت ا ركيز الجموكوز، الكوليستيرول والبيميروبين فضلا عن ارتفاع فعاليةالإنزيمات الناقمة للأمين، الفوسفاتاز القاعدي والأمايميز مع انخفاض ت ا ركيز الجميسيريدات الثلاثية وبروتيناتمصل الدم معنويا (p≤0.05) عن مجموعة السيطرة بينما أدت معاممة الجرذان المعرضة لمبا ا ركواتبالديكساميثازون إلى الحد من نسبة الهلاكات فضلا عن خفض فعالية الإنزيمات الناقمة للأمين، الفوسفاتازالقاعدي وتركيز كل من الجميسيريدات الثلاثية والبيميروبين الكمّي في مصل الدم (p≤0.05) بينما ارتفعت فعاليةالأمايميز وت ا ركيز كل من الكوليستيرول الكمي، البروتين الكمّي، الألبومين والغموبيولين في حين لم يظهر الجموكوزأي تغير مقارنة بالمجموعة المعاممة بالبا ا ركوات لوحده. يستنتج من الد ا رسة الحالية أن الديكساميثازون يمكن أنيحد من اضط ا رب مؤش ا رت وظائف الكبد الناتج عن المعاممة بالبا ا ركوات.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:BACKGROND:Thalidomide is the first in the class of drugs as an immune modulatory drugs (IMiDs). In vitro data suggest that the drug and its metabolites may inhibit angiogenesis, in addition it may modulate adhesion molecules of myeloma cells and their surrounding stroma,.The combination of thalidomide plus dexamethasone is a feasible and active regimen in the treatment of multiple myeloma as It emerge an oral alternative to infusional chemotherapy with vincristine, doxorubicin ,dexamethasone currently used as pretransplantation induction therapy for myeloma.OBJECTIVE:To assess the efficacy ,response rate and safety using the combination of thalidomide-dexamehasone as front line therapy and in relapsed , refractory cases of myelomaMATERIAL AND METHODS:Between February 2008 up to January 2010, thirty five cases of multiple myeloma received a combination of Thalidomide and Dexamethasone for 4 cycles. Those patients had been followed and evaluated at National Centre of Hematology.All cases of myeloma were staged at diagnosis according to Durie – Salmon Staging system. Response based on criteria by Chronic Leukemia and Myeloma Task force ( EBMT criteria ) as complete response (CR), good partial response(GPR) and no response(NR) .RESULTS:After 4 cycles of therapy , 6(17%) patients achieved complete response,22( 62.9%) patients achieved good partial response, 3(8.6%) patients with minimal response and 4 ( 11.4% ) patients fail responded to treatment .Of those who failed treatment, three patients died two of them with heart failure and one with multi organ failure. Concerning the toxicity , The most common side effect was related to neurotoxcity in form of peripheral neuropathy and thromboembolic disease. Otherwise most of the remaining side effects were rated as mild to moderate CONCLUSION: Thal-Dex is an effective myeloma treatment in terms of response , easy to use as outpatient clinic and avoid complications related to line access or cardiac toxicity that related to other treatments.

Abstract

The aim of this study investigate the effects of long term administration ofDexamethasone (DEX.) 17 β-estradiol (EST.) on body weight, concentration of somehormones ( Leptin, thyroid and reproductive hormone) in addition to determination oflipid profile of female rabbits blood serum.Thirty local rabbits were subdivided randomly and equally into three groups. Thefirst group was used as a control which injected with normal saline . The second groupwas injected daily (0.5mg /kg B.W) DEX . Intramuscularly. The third group was injectedsubcutaneously daily with 0.3 mg /kg B.W s/c 17 β-estradiol. All groups in this studywere treated for 60 days , and blood collected every 15 days. Serum was tested for leptin,LH, FSH, T3, T4 hormones total Cholesterol(TC), HDL(height density lipo-protein),LDL (low density lipo- protein),TG (triglycerides), Body weight was taken every 15 daysfrom the first day .The result showed significant (P≤0.05) decreased in body weight afteradministration of both dexamethasone (DEX.) and Estrogen (EST.), significant increasedin leptin concentration with dexamethasone (DEX.) Treatment while significantdecreased with Estrogen (EST.) treatment, in the other hand LH and FSH concentrationshowed significant decreased in both treatment dexamethasone (DEX.) and Estrogen(EST.) thyroid hormone show significant decreased with dexamethasone (DEX.)Treatment and significant increased T3 & T4 hormone with Estrogen (EST.) treatment ascompare with control while the increase in the T4 it was occurred only in the periods (45and 60)days within treatment groups , lipid profile (TC,TG,LDL, HDL,VLDL) showsignificant increased with DEX. treatment while Significant decreased with EST.treatment

Abstract

Background:Dexamethasone is a highly potent glucocorticoid. Treatment with dexamethasone results in several metabolic perturbations on nearly all organs of the body including the liver.Objective:This study had been carried out in order to investigate the effects of dexamethasone sodium phosphate as synthetic form of glucocorticoids on the rabbit liver as a model for human liver, by a light microscope, using two extreme of doses and two durations to show the dose and duration dependency.Methods:Liver specimens were obtained from rabbits treated with dexamethasone sodium phosphate and from control groups 1 and 2, the specimens were fixed and processed to evaluate the histological and histochemical changes.Results:Vacuolation and ballooning of hepatic cells were observed in the liver of the treated groups associated with degenerative changes of these cells, dilatation and congestion of central hepatic vein and sinusoidal capillaries were observed, positive periodic acid schiff's stain (PAS) reactions were noticed in the treated groups. All these changes were dose and duration related.Conclusion:Morphological changes induced in the liver by dexamethasone sodium phosphate could be accepted as side effects of these drugs.Key words:Liver, dexamethasone, histology, glycogen.

Abstract

The current study was conducted for the period from September 2015 until August 2016 in college of Education for Pure Sciences - University of Thi- Qar, this study aimed to fallow the changes on the External morphology features at different Embryonic Developmental stages when the pregnant mice treated with different doses of Dexamethasone (Dex). Use In the current study, sixty pregnant mice were randomly divided into four groups and each group of 15 pregnant mice. Given the members of each group specific dose of Dex and at different time periods, while the control group injected with a solution of Normal Saline 0.9%, all animals received doses used by tail intravenous injection until the end of the time periods specified. The treatment of animals under the same conditions were determined dose based on body weight, according to what is stated in the pharmaceutical constitutions. The results of statistical analysis at the level of probability (p<0.05) to different doses Dexamethasone show there is an negative effects on mice embryo's body weights and the lengths increase with increasing of number and doses concentrations. using of different doses of Dex showed various changes on general external morphological features and congenital malformation in embryos of treated mothers included: Death of embryos , Letter C Shape Embryos , Head hemorrhage , placenta damage , Neural Tube Defect, Trunk Torsion, curved head , Brain hypertrophy , Liver Hypertrophy , swelling , Short nostril and limbs, Convoluted Tail, Oedema ,Wrinkled skin, absent fingers and eyelids, Crooked pave, Short toes, Seal legs appearance , Tail congestion , Bulging eyes.

اجريت الدراسة الحالية في مختبرات كلية التربية للعلوم الصرفة وللفترة من ايلول 2015 الى آب 2016 .هدفت الدراسة الحالية الى دراسة تأثير الديكساميثازون (Dex)على الخصائص المظهرية العامة لعدة مراحل تكوينية مختلفة في اجنة الفئران البيضاء. أُستخدم في الدراسة الحالية ستون فأرة حامل تم توزيعها عشوائياً الى اربع مجاميع كل مجموعة تضم خمس عشر فأرة حامل . اعطي افراد كل مجموعة جرعة محددة من Dex وعلى مدد زمنية محددة بينما حقنت افراد مجموعة السيطرة بالمحلول الفسلجي 0.9% , تلقت جميع الحيوانات الجرع المستخدمة عن طريق حقن الوريد الذنبي حتى نهاية المدد الزمنية المحددة. تم معاملة الحيوانات تحت الظروف نفسها وتم تحديد الجرعة بالاعتماد على وزن الجسم وحسب ماورد في الدساتير الدوائية . اظهرت نتائج التحليل الاحصائي عند مستوى احتمال (0.05p<) لجرع مختلفة من الديكساميثازون ان هناك تأثيرات سلبية على اوزان واطوال الاجنة تزداد بازدياد عدد وتراكيز الجرع.استخدام جرع مختلفة من الديكساميثازون اظهرت تغييرات في الخصائص المظهرية الخارجية العامة و تشوهات خلقية في الاجنة للامهات المعاملة تضمنت : موت الاجنة , الاجنة بشكل حرف C , نزيف الرأس, تلف المشيمة, عيوب الانبوب العصبي ,انحراف الجذع , ,تضخم الدماغ ,تضخم الكبد , تورم , قصر الانف والاطراف ,التفاف الذيل , استسقاء, تجعد الجلد ,انحناء الرأس , انعدام الاصابع واجفان العيون ,انعقاف الكف ,قصر اصابع القدم , مظهر ارجل الفقمة ,نزيف في الذنب, انتفاخ العيون

Abstract

ACKGROUND: Postoperative Nausea and vomiting is Common complication depending on the type of surgery, technique and duration of anesthesia.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of Dexamethasone as antiemetic in comparison with Metoclopramide.METHODS: Is aprospective study carried on (100) patients undergone elective cholecystectomy in a periodfrom Jan. 2009 to April. 2010 in Baghdad Teaching Hospital / Medical city/Baghdad/Iraq. The patients were allocated into two groups of 50 patients each. Group A received 8mgDexamethasone, group B received 10mg metoclopramide intravenously, both groups monitoredpostoperatively for nausea and vomitting for 24 hours every 4 hours.RESULT:Regarding Nausea, for 24 hrs the results were not significant except at 24th hr., in which nauseamore significant in metoclopramide group.Regarding Vomiting, there was no significant from postoperative period to 12hr, while from 16 hr.to 24 hr. there were significant fewer incidences in dexamethasone group.CONCLUSION: A single dose of Dexamethasone is effective same as Metoclopramide in prevention of PONV ,and it is better in late prevention postoperativel

The Effects of Dexamethasone on Postoperative Complications After Surgical Removal of Impacted Lower Third Molar Teeth

Abstract

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of dexamethasone on postoperativecomplications after surgical removal of impacted lower third molar.Sixty patients submitted for surgical removal of impacted lower third molar, thirtypatients received dexamethasone ampoule I.M (8 mg/2 ml) one hour preoperatively followed byone ampoule 12 hours post operatively, compared with another thirty patients who did notreceive dexamethasone. The parameters of comparison were swelling and trismus depending onthe patient's outcome (Yes or No), in addition to pain using VAS scale. Findings were recordedat second, fourth, and seventh days postoperatively.Dexamethasone appear to have great effect on reducing the post operative complications(pain, swelling and trismus) after the surgical removal of lower third molar and the statisticalanalysis showed a highly significant difference between group one that received dexamethasoneand group two without dexamethasone.We concluded that

الخلاصة :ان الھدف من ھذه الدراسة ھو بیان تاثیر مادة الدكسامیثازون على تقلیل التاثیرات الجانبیة (الألم، الورم والتشنج)الناتجة عن رفع ضرس العقل في الفك السفلي والتي من الممكن ان تؤثر على فعالیة المریضسلبا.ستون مریضا شًاركوا في ھذه الدراسة وتم توزیعھم على مجموعتین, المجموعھ الاولى ( 30 ) مریضا تًم اعطائھمحقنة دكسامیثازون 8 ملغم/ 2 مل في العضلة قبل العملیة بساعة واحدة ثم حقنة ثانیة بعد العملیة باثني عشر ساعة. أماالمجموعھ الثانیة ( 30 ) مریضا فًلم یتم اعطائھم ھذه الحقنة. تمت المقارنة بین المجموعتین عن طریق متابعة (الألم، الورموالتشنج).أظھرت الاختبارات الاحصائیة أن المجموعة التي أستخدم معھم الدكسامیثازون كان (الالم، الورم والتشنج) اقل منالذین لم یستخدم معھم الدكسامیثازون بشكل كبیر.
