Longitudinal study of dental caries experience and pattern among a group of children in Baghdad

Abstract

The most dramatic increase in dental decay is thought to have occurred during thelast part of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The aim of this study wasto investigate the caries experience and pattern in primary and permanent teeth in alongitudinal study. Dental caries of 166 kindergarten children of 4-5 years old wasrecorded. Only 122 of the children were re-examined when their ages became 10-11.The third examination of 118 children was done when their ages became 13-14.Dental caries registration was done following the criteria of WHO (1987). Dentalprevalence was increased by age reaching 94.9 percent at 13-14 years old. No sexdifferences were observed among the three examinations except in DMFT. TheDMFT incidence after 6 years was 4.3 and after 3 years was 1.8, while DMFSincidence was 6.4 and 2.2 respectively. The D/d component was the highest meanvalue. Although dental caries was significantly higher in posterior than in anteriorteeth, there were no jaw differences. Occlusal and proximal surfaces were thepredominate surfaces affected among permanent and primary teeth respectively.Coinciding with the incline in caries experience observed among children, changes inthe distribution and progression rate of the disease have been found.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the pattern of values among two samples of Yemeni students selected from Ibb University during the academic years of 2004-2005 (N=388) and 2012-2013 (N=524), and whether the difference between the two samples regarding such values is statistically significant according to their gender, field of study and area of residence. Allport, Vernon and Lindsey scale of values was adapted and given to both samples. The results showed that religious values have occupied the first rank, followed by social, political, theoretical, economic and aesthetic values. Having calculated the values of all students, males and females whose fields of studies are humanitarian and scientific, rural or urban, it was found that religious values ranked the first, followed by social ones. Aesthetic values ranked the last. With regard to theoretical, economic, political and religious values, they have alternated in ranks; third, fourth and fifth. Statistical significant differences between the two samples were revealed in favor of the first sample (2004-2005) in the theoretical, economic, political and religious values and there was statistical significant differences in favor of the second sample (2012-2013) only in aesthetic values.

يهدف هذا البحث إلى التعرف على النسق القيمي لدى طلبة جامعة إب – اليمن، خلال العام الجامعي 2004-2005م، ومثل ذلك، خلال العام الجامعي 2012-2013م، ثم التعرف على الفرق في النسق القيمي ودلالته الإحصائية بين عينتي العامين 2004-2005 و2012-2013م، ثم التعرف على الفرق بين العينتين في النسق القيمي ودلالتها الإحصائية، وفقاً لمتغيرات الجنس والاختصاص ومنطقة السكن. وقد تم استخدام مقياس القيم لـ (البورت وفرنون ولندزي)، والمكيف على طلبة الجامعة في اليمن، وطبق على عينة خلال العام 2004-2005 بلغت (388) طالباً وطالبة، ثم أعيد التطبيق خلال العام 2012-2013 على عينة بلغت (524) طالباً وطالبة، وقدأظهرت النتائج ان:ـ القيم الدينية قد احتلت الترتيب الاول, تلتها الاجتماعية ثم النظرية ثم السياسية ثم الاقتصادية ثم الجمالية , وذلك في التطبيقين .ـ ترتيب القيم لدى كل من عينة الذكور والاناث وطلبة الاختصاصات الانسانية والعلمية وطلبة المدينة والريف كل بمفردها , قد احتلت القيم الدينية فيها الترتيب الاول، تلتها الاجتماعية ,فيما احتلت الجمالية المرتبة الاخيرة , اما القيم النظرية والاقتصادية والسياسية , فقد تناوبت المرتبة الثالثة والرابعة والخامسة ,وذلك في التطبيقين .ـ هناك فروقا دالة احصائية بين عينتي التطبيقين لصالح عينة 2004ـ2005، في القيم النظرية والاقتصادية والسياسية والدينية , ولصالح عينة2012 ـ2013 فقط في القيم الجمالية , ولا فرق في القيم الاجتماعية.
