Abstract

Aim: To investigate the effects of chemotherapeutic agents on the oral health of children and to com-pare the action of two mouth rinses chlorhexidine digluconate 0.2 % and salty water (0.9% NaCl) in relation to their ability in controlling the plaque and gingival inflammation with children treated by cytotoxic agents. Materials and Method: In this clinical trial, the selected children were divided into two groups the first one comprised of 30 healthy children represented as a control group and the second one comprised of 30 children who were receiving chemotherapy for at least 6 months, they were se-lected from patients attended to pediatric wards of public hospitals in Mosul city .All children were of similar age groups and mean age of 5+ 1 years. The plaque and gingival indices were measured accord-ing to silness and lِöe for the six teeth at the baseline. Then the 30 children who were receiving chemo-therapy were randomly divided into two groups; each consisting of 15 children, they were instructed to use mouth rinses twice daily for 30 seconds after breakfast and before the bed time. The plaque and gingival indices were again measured one month after mouth rinsing for the six teeth at the baseline. Results: The results of this study revealed that the chemotherapeutic agents modify oral health and there was significant increase of plaque and gingival indices in children receiving chemotherapeutic agents (at p≤0.05), also results showed that there was a significant reduction after rinsing with chlor-hexidine digluconate for plaque and gingival indices (at p≤0.05), while non significant change for salty water mouth wash. Conclusion: In view of the possible factors that causes increase of the plaque and gingival indices, suggested myelosuppresion that is associated with chemotherapy which has effects on rate and pattern of hard and soft tissues resulting in reduced the ability to repair and maintain the oral health status.

Abstract

The term of (Alum) refers to various isomorphous double sulfates composed oftrivalent and univalent metals, especially aluminum potassium sulfate, KAl(SO4)2·12H2O, Alum as a compound has been used in past to treat different oral andmedical conditions. Using of alum as a mouth wash in periodontology was notcompletely explored and only a few studies were carried out regarding this subject. This study was carried out to observe the effect of alum as an adjunctive therapy inperiodontitis. One hundred twenty patients with chronic periodontitis were randomly allocatedinto four groups. The first group treated with conventional root planing procedureusing periodontal curette. The other three groups were treated with the sameconventional procedure followed by twice a day mouth rinse with differentconcentrations of Alum solutions for three weeks after root planing. Means of PLI, GI& PD were calculated for the participants before treatment and three weeks after. Results of this research showed a significant decrease in all study parameters in allgroups with significant differences between the two different modalities of treatment.Alum solution can be a good adjunctive treatment for chronic periodontitis, butmore studies are needed on both short and long terms.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Cinnamomum zeylanicum aqueous extracts and ethanol extracts on different type of dental plaque microorganisms. Screening study was performed to detect the potential antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, S. mutans, Lactobacillus and dental plaque pool samples. From the screening test, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values were determined. The lowest MIC value was 25 mg/ml of aqueous and 12.5 mg/ml of ethanol extract for S. aureus. The highest MIC values were seen in dental plaque anaerobic pool samples with 300 mg/ml of aqueous extract and 150 mg/ml of ethanol extract. The MIC values for aqueous extracts ranged from 25 to 300 mg/ml where as ethanol extract ranged from 12.5 to 150 mg/ml. The high concentration of ethanol extract, 100 mg/ml in the fixed plant concentration test showed the most inhibition effect for all the organisms tested. Generally, the Cinnamomum zeylanicum ethanol extracts demonstrated a stronger antibacterial activity compared to the aqueous extract. This study also compares the antibacterial activity of chlorhexidine with the plant extracts but chlorhexidine showed a higher antibacterial effect on the microorganisms where almost all organisms inhibited The morphological structures of S. mutans Lactobacillus were observed under SEM before and after treatment with Cinnamomum zeylanicum extracts and chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash. This study did not detect any physical changes occurring in shapes and structures of the bacteria after treatment with Cinnamomum zeylanicum extracts. The scanning electron micrograph of bacteria after treatment with chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash showed visible changes in the shapes and structures of the bacteria. Cinnamomum zeylanicum present promising antibacterial properties which could be used to inhibit dental plaque formation

Abstract

Introduction:Fluoride containing mouth rinses, and toothpastes have been reported to decreasethe corrosion resistance of titanium.Salvadora persica has been recently introduced in twoforms: tooth paste (Saudi Arabia) and mouth wash. The influence of these products on TitaniumAlloy Surface Topography has not been tested before. Aim of the study: To compare betweenthe effects of Salvadora persica(Siwak® toothpaste and its alcoholic extract), with fluoridecontaining tooth paste (kin® toothpaste) and kin® mouth wash on the corrosion of pure titaniumgrade 2 (cpTi). Materials and methods: Alcoholic extract of Salvadora persicawas prepared, and tested on sixty weighted samples of cpTi divided into 4 experimental groups. Samples in thecontrol group were immersed in distilled water. In the first experimental group, samples weretreated with Kin® tooth paste. For the 2nd experimental group, samples treated with Kin® mouthwash. Samples in the 3rd experimental group were treated with Siwak® toothpaste. The finalexperimental group was treated with extract of Salvadora persica. These samples were subjectedto surface topography (AFM) and transverse strength tests before, after three, and six months oftreatments. Results: Weighting test showed no significant difference (p≤0.05) between the meanvalues of four treated groups of cpTi samples before, and after 3 months. However, there was asignificant difference (p<0.05)between cpTi before and after 6 months treatment with Siwak®tooth paste. Surface topography showed a statistically significant difference between root meansquare roughnesses of cpTi samples after 3, and 6 months of treatment. Transverse strength alsoshowed a statistically significant difference between the mean value of cpTi between the treatedand control groups after three months and six months. Conclusions:Siwak® toothpaste seems to have more effect on both weight and roughness of cpTicompared to alcohol extract of Salvadora persicaand Kin® toothpaste.

Abstract

Background:The color stability of aesthetic arch wires is an important factor in the success of an aesthetic orthodontic treatment, but the color of these arch wires tends to change with time. This study was performed to assess the effect of two types of mouth washes on the color stability of different types of aesthetic arch wires at different time intervals.Materials and methods:Four brands of nickel titanium coated aesthetic arch wires were used: epoxy coated (Orthotechnology and G&H) and Teflon coated (Dany and Hubit).Thirty six samples were prepared, each sample contains ten halves of the aesthetic arch wires. They were divided into three groups according to the immersion media (distilled water as a control media, Listerine with fluoride and Listerine without fluoride) and immersed for 30 seconds twice daily according to manufacturer's instructions to measure color change after 1 week, 3 weeks and 6 weeks by using spectrophotometer VITA Easyshade Compact according to Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage L*a*b* color space system. Results:It was found that there were highly significant differences in color change values of aesthetic arch wires among all immersion media at different time intervals and color change value increases as the time of immersion increases.Additionally, Listerine with fluoride mouth wash caused higher color change values of aesthetic arch wires than Listerine without fluoride and Hubit aesthetic arch wires were the least color stable while Orthotechnology aesthetic arch wires were the most color stable. Conclusions: We can conclude that the daily use of Listerine mouth washes could affect on the color stability of aesthetic arch wires. Although all tested aesthetic arch wires revealed color changes at variable degrees but some of these changes were not visible and the others were clinically acceptable while the remaining were clinically unacceptable.
