Abstract

AbstractSmoking is linked to osteoporosis through its anti-estrogenic effect in womenwhich results in premature menopause in smokers and increased bone resorption iscorrelated with estrogen loss in menopause women. The aim of this study is toevaluate the effects of smoking and hormonal changes on the thickness of mandibularinferior cortex and the dentition status in both maxilla and mandible (DMFT) inmenopausal females and to estimate the value of panoramic radiographic findings inassessing the possibility of latent osteoporosis. Panoramic images for 80 healthy, median stature, smokers and non-smokers Iraqi female subjects aged (20-35) yearspremenopausal and (45-60) years menopause was done, then the thickness ofmandibular inferior cortex and (DMFT) was evaluated. The results showed thatpanoramic radiographic measurements are considered as indicator of bone turnoverand the dentist is able to identify smokers and non-smokers postmenopausal femaleswith increase risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis by using dental panoramicradiography which is a simple valuable screening tool.

Abstract

Digital panoramic radiographs were analyzed to study the shape, appearance, relative vertical and horizontal position of mental foramen in both dentate and edentulous patientsDigital panoramic radiographs were made to 144 patients, 76 dentate, (38 female and 38 male) and 68 edentulous, (30 female and 38 male). The age distribution of them was ranging between (24 – 73) years old. Mental foramen was unidentified on both sides ( right and left ) on 8 radiographs , so these 8 radiographs were excluded from the sample , which are consisting 5.5 % of the total sample . While mental foramen was unidentified on only one side ( either right or left ) of a radiograph , was included within the sample , which means that 136 radiographs (272 sides ) were included in this study 72 dentate (144 sides ) and 64 edentulous (128 sides ) radiographs . Chi – square test was used to compare the shape and the appearance of mental foramen between the two groups (dentate and edentulous), while Student t – test was used to compare the relative vertical and horizontal position of mental foramen between them. The comparison between dentate and edentulous groups showed no significant difference in the shape and appearance of mental foramen when Chi- square test was used. While the comparison using Student t- test showed a highly significant difference between the two groups in relative vertical position , and a significant difference in relative horizontal position of mental foramen .No significant difference was found in the shape and appearance of mental foramen on the digital panoramic radiograph, for both dentate and edentulous patients, while the vertical and horizontal positions of mental foramen were not constant between them.

Abstract

To assess the subjective image quality in digital panoramic radiograph, when thetube current level (mA) is reduced.By Dimax 3 digital planmeca x-ray machine two digital panoramic projections canobtained for a dry skull , the first projections was performed at standard exposuresetting , the tube current level (mA) was reduced in the second exposure by 25% ,50% , and 75% respectively . 10 observers evaluated both projections for theanatomical landmarks which are commonly appearing in the panoramic radiograph.Radiographs taken at the reduced (mA) level of 75% had highly statisticallysignificant inferior score P<0.0001 for anatomical details. At reduced tube current level (mA), radiographs had inferior subjective image quality, but a reduction in tube current level (mA) of approximately 50% is accepted.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to confirm the ability of digital panoramic (program 20sinus projections) in detection of maxillary sinus disease. The represented of radiopaque mass at the floor of maxillary sinus of a dry skull wascompared in digitalWater's and panoramic (programs 20 sinus) projections. The mass with a diameter of 10mm situated on the floor of the maxillary sinus. The radiopaque mass was shown better by digital panoramic (program 20 sinusprojection), while the digitalWater's projection was less effective.the digital panoramic (program 20 sinus projections) proved more effective indetection masses on the floor of maxillary sinus than digital Water's projection whereit's not clearly detected due to superimposition of maxillary molar teeth

Abstract

The maxillary and mandibular bones can reflect the status of all of the skeletal bones , any bone lose in the mandible is not due to local factors only such as previous extraction of teeth can be considered as the first sign of osteoporosis in the other skeletal bones and future bone fracture. To obtain statistical data on the alveolar bone height at different regions of the body of the mandible by panoramic radiograph in different age groups of Iraqi males and females. The study include the diagnostic panoramic radiograph of 40 images of randomly selected patients from males and females without sign and symptoms for any systemic diseases affecting the bone. There was a significant high difference between males and females in midline and mental foramen areas.Dentist should pay greater attention to older females patients because they are prone to rapid alveolar bone resorption.

Abstract

Introduction: Distal caries of mandibular second molars has been documented to be associated almost exclusivelywith impacted third molars. The level of involvement of second molars in distal caries is influenced by the angulationof the occlusal surface of mandibular third molars and third molars depth. In spite of the importance of these factors onthe occurrence of distal caries, their influence on prophylactic extraction decision of asymptomatic impacted molars forIraqi population did not get enough attention.Aim: of the study: To determine the influence of mandibular third molar impaction, as identified by panoramicradiograph, on distal caries incidence in second molar in Iraqi population.Materials and Methods: Panoramic radiographs of impacted mandibular third molars prior to surgical extraction wereretrieved from the database of Al-Karamah Secondary Dental Care Centre in the period 2004-2013. Demographic datawere collected for all cases. Each panoramic radiograph was examined for the presence of distal caries of mandibularsecond molar and for the level of depth and degree of angulation of adjacent impacted mandibular third molar. Results: One hundred forty-eight panoramic radiographs of 214 pre-surgically extracted impacted mandibular thirdmolars were reviewed. Eighty-four (56.8%) of the cases were for males and sixty-four (43.2%) were for females. ChiSquareTest showed significant relationship between age group, impaction angulation, impaction depth and incidenceof mandibular second molar distal caries. It also showed highly significant relationship between angulation and depthof impaction. Conclusion: Horizontally impacted mandibular third molars close to the level of occlusion increases the chance ofdistal caries incidence in adjacent mandibular second molars. Close monitoring for such cases would be a suitableoption. Further prospective studies should be conducted to study the influence of other factors on distal caries incidence.

Abstract

Background:- External Apical Root resorption is one of the most common and undesirable sequel of orthodontic treatment .Objective:-The purpose of the present study was to research and identify factors related to root resorption during orthodontic treatment in Ramadi city. Patients and Methods: This study consisted of 172 patients who had completed orthodontic treatments and taken the pre- and post-treatment panoramic radiographs. The length of tooth was measured. A NOVA and t test was performed to compare the mean amount of root resorption between right and left side, male and female, between extraction and non-extraction cases, open bite ,deep bite and normal bite and class I ,class II &class III. The correlation coefficients were measured between the amount of root resorption and the beginning age of the orthodontic treatment, and the duration of treatment. Results: In this study the maxillary central incisors were the most resorbed teeth, there is no significant different between male and female, left and right side. There was a significant different between extraction and non-extraction therapy, open bite, normal bite and deep bite and class I,II and III treatment. this study showed that treatment duration and the age of the patient was not related to the degree of resorption . Conclusion :-The radiographic follow up for the assessment of root resorption of all patients undergoing orthodontic therapy .These findings show that orthodontic treatment should be carefully performed to the tooth, moved a greater distances during treatment.
