Abstract

Background: Undergraduate dental students are more susceptible to situations of stress that affected quality of sleep, such profiles of stress may result in sleep bruxism and/or awake bruxism, parafunctions that can affect oral and general health. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association of sleep bruxism, awake bruxism and sleep quality among dental students.Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was performed including 260 Iraqi dental students from university of Baghdad aged from 20to25years old. Students enrolled in the third and fifth class participated in the study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Questionnaire Index (PSQI) was used for data collection. The PSQI was distributed during lecture classes. Sleep bruxism and awake bruxism diagnosis was based on self-reported data. Results: prevalence of sleep bruxism was 9.62% and prevalence of awake bruxism was 15.76%. Statistically significant differences were observed between students who had awake bruxism and the mean of PSQI global score and its components of sleep categories: PSQI global score and day time dysfunction (p<0.001), habitual sleep efficiency (p=0.044; p<0.05) and sleep quality (p=0.046; p<0.05). While for students had sleep bruxism the statistically significant differences were observed in sleep disturbance (p=0.021; p<0.05) and sleep duration (p=0.042; p<0.05).Conclusion: Poor sleep quality was an important factor among dental students, who reported awake bruxism as well as among those who presented sleep bruxism

Abstract

Background: Glycemic control is important to reduce the risk of micro ‑ vascular problems among patients with diabetes mellitus. Sleeplimitation leads to increase Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) levels; though, slight is known regarding the metabolic impacts of usual sleep limitation. The current study was a hospital‑based cross‑sectional study which performed to evaluate the association between habitual sleep quality withglycemic control and HbA1c fluctuations among contributors in the medical merjan city among Type 2 diabetics. Objectives: The purpose ofcurrent study is to assess sleep quality among Type 2 diabetic patients and to consider the influence of sleep value on glycemic control amongthose patients in Al‑Hilla City. Methods: Our study was “descriptive cross sectional study” to assess the sleep quality using Pittsburgh SleepQuality Index by filling out the questionnaire formats which designed for usage of the study. This study include a “convenient sample” of150 Type 2 diabetic patients who visit the specialist day clinic in diabetic center of merjan medical hospital between the 25th of February tothe end of June, 2018. Verbal approval was attained from each Type 2 diabetic patient, data collection was done through the interviewing ofcontributors by use of structural questionnaire. Results: The mean age of diabetic patients was (53.20 ± 13.53), Male represents (42.7%) andfemale represents (57.3%). Poor sleep quality represent (35.3%). There was a significant increase in level of HbA1c and random blood sugaramong patients with Type 2 diabetics with poor sleep quality and significant decrease of cholesterol and triglycerides levels with increaseduration of diabetes mellitus. Conclusions: Poor sleep was common among diabetic patients. There is close association between sleep qualityand glycemic control, as well as short sleepers have an increased occurrence of diabetes.

Abstract

Background: Patients with End-stage renal failure face many challenges due to their condition, which may leave them feel fatigued, depressed and lack in sleep quality associated with poor quality of life. Aim: Determining the impact of fatigue and sleep quality upon the quality of life of haemodialysis recipient patients. Methodology: The study was conducted in haemodialysis unit at Sohag University Hospital from January 2014 to June 2014. A purposive sample of 221 patients with ESRD were treated by Haemodialysis. Personal Information Form (PIF), QoL Short Forme-36(SF-36), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) tools are used for data collection. Data was analyzed through descriptive statistical approach(frequency and percentage) and inferential approach (mean of score, Pearson correlation coefficient, ANOVA test and independent samples t-test).Results: The mean age ± SD of patients was 42.3 ± 13.1 years. The study found that 87.3% of patients were poor sleepers (global PSQI ≥5), 84.2% were suffering from fatigue, and quality of life mean was 33.6±17.5. According to age and sex, it was found that the younger and male patients were less complaining from fatigue and poor sleep. They have better quality of life compared to other groups. There was a significant positive correlation between age and both physical and mental components scores, sleep and fatigue. Also a negative correlation was found between physical and mental components scores and sleep and fatigue. Conclusions: Haemodialysis patients had poor quality of mental and physical health. The quality of life was impaired as seen by poor sleep and fatigue. It is suggested that these patients require the attention of health caregivers for the need of possible psychological support.
