Abstract

Background: Acute infectious gastroenteritis is one of the most common infectious diseases of human, ranking second to acute respiratory tract infections, and it is a worldwide cause of morbidity with a significance cause of death in children below five years, in developing countries.Objectives: to evaluate effect of zinc supplementation on children admission duration to hospital and their residency for those who had diarrheal diseases.Methods: In this study, 50 children were enrolled, having the age between 6mth-5yr, they have been admitted for diarrhea in Al-zahraa teaching hospital in Al-najaf governorate for the period of(March-June)2011 . those patients are subdivided into two group in regard to zinc supplementation as group one who constitute 25 patients managed without zinc given , while other 25 patients designed as group two who received 20 mg elemental zinc for 14 days from starting day, serum zinc level was recorded for each group , and the duration of their hospital stay was recorded .spss and chi square . Result: the study showed that using zinc tablets has a good effect on the duration of hospital stay , as 52% of those children (group-2)who received zinc were discharged after 3 days of admission in comparison to 3(12%) of those children(group-1) who have not received zinc tablet .Conclusion: using zinc tablet for every child admitted to hospital because of diarrhea will shortens patient residency and time of hospital stay.Recommendation: We recommend;(1)Adding zinc for every child presented with diarrhea whether admitted to hospital or treated as out- patient.(2)Further studies are required to assess the benefit of adding other trace element to the management such as vitamin-A and copper.

الخلفية: التهاب الأمعاء الحاد يعتبر احد أهم أسباب الالتهابات المعدية الشائعة لدى الإنسان ,والثانية بعد التهابات التنفسية الحادة ,وهي احد أسباب المراضة وسبب رئيسي للوفاة عند الأطفال دون سن الخامسة في الدول الناميةالهدف: لتقييم تأثير تزويد مادة الزنك غلى دخول الأطفال المصابين بالإسهال للمستشفى وعلى فترة رقودهم ومن ثم تقليل تكاليفهم.المنهجية: في هذه الدراسة تم تضمين(50) طفلا تتراوح أعمارهم بين (6)اشهر –(5)سنوات مصابون بالإسهال وادخلوا إلى مستشفى الزهراء في محافظة النجف ,وهؤلاء قسموا إلى مجموعتين متساويتان ,حيث أن المجموعة الأولى لم تعطى الزنك ,أما الثانية فزودت بحبوب الزنك بجرعة (20)ملغم ولمدة (14) يوما . مستوى الزنك بالدم سجل وحدد لكل مريض في المجموعتين .النتائج: الدراسة أظهرت أن استعمال حبوب الزنك في علاج الإسهال له تأثير ايجابي على مدة الرقود في المستشفى ,حيث أن (52%)من الأطفال في المجموعة الثانية التي أعطيت الزنك قد اخرجوا من المستشفى بعد ثلاثة أيام من دخولها بالمقارنة مع تحسن (12%)من أطفال المجموعة الأولى والتي لم تزود بمادة الزنك .الاستنتاجات: استعمال حبوب الزنك لكل طفل مصاب بالإسهال يقلل من احتمالية دخوله المستشفى أو فترة رقوده فيها التوصيات: نوصي (1)إضافة مادة الزنك لكل طفل مصاب بالإسهال سواء ادخل المستشفى أو يعالج خارجها .(2) مطلوب عمل دراسات لاحقة لمعرفة مدى فائدة إضافة مواد نادرة أخرى للعلاج كفيتامين -أ- و النحاس .

Threshold sensitivity of taste perception and the role of saliva and Zinc level in some physiological & pathological conditions

Abstract

Summary:
Background: Decreased taste acuity to the four basic tastes is closely related to health problems (diseases & medications), aging, and smoking. This study aimed to determine taste detection and recognition thresholds to the four basic tastes in some physiological and pathological conditions, determine saliva flow rate, serum and saliva zinc levels in these groups.
Objective and Methods: The study includes 218 individuals (35–80) years old divided into six groups; the control, aging (subjects over 60 years), smokers, diabetics, haemodialysis patients and hypertensive patients on chronic use of captopril.The taste detection and recognition thresholds of sweet, salty, sour and bitter tastes, saliva flow rate were determined. Zinc concentration was assessed in serum and saliva spectrophotometricaly.
Results: The results showed a significant increase in the taste detection and recognition thresholds of the four basic tastes of all groups than in the control, except the salty taste thresholds of the haemodialysis group and the salty taste detection threshold of the diabetics.
Saliva flow rates, serum and saliva zinc levels decreased significantly at p<0.001 in study groups as compared to the control group.
Conclusions:The taste acuity was impaired in aged subjects, smokers, diabetics, haemodialysis patients, and hypertensive patients on chronic use of captopril.
Decreased saliva flow rate and saliva zinc concentration could be causative factors for hypogeusia.

Abstract

Background: Leukemia is a group of malignant disorders associated with increased numbers of blood white blood cells. Acute leukemia occurs at all ages. Because zinc influences many body systems and functions, zinc is an essential nutrient for tissue growth, cellular division, protein synthesis DNA and RNA replication it also ought to play a critical role in the growth of tumor. In this study, serum zinc was estimated in leukemic patients and compared with healthy subjects.Methods: The subjects in the present study were; fourty-four depressed patients aged (14-48 year), thirty-one apparently healthy subjects were selected as control group. Their sex and age were comparable to that of patients. Determination of serum zinc was carried out using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer.Results: The results showed a significant decrease in serum zinc at (p<0.05) in leukemic patients as compared with healthy control.Conclusion: The decrease in serum concentration of zinc in leukemia can be explained by means of the changes in immunity system and the need for zinc to synthesize nucleic acid and tumor cell division in this disorder in addition to other possible mechanisms.

Abstract

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is probably the most typical II-VI semiconductor, which exhibits a wide range of nanostructures. In this paper, polycrystalline ZnO thin films were prepared by chemical spray pyrolysis technique, the films were deposited onto glass substrate at 400 °C by using aqueous zinc chloride as a spray solution of molar concentration of 0.1 M/L.
The crystallographic structure of the prepared film was analyzed using X-ray diffraction; the result shows that the film was polycrystalline, the grain size which was calculated at (002) was 27.9 nm. The Hall measurement of the film studied from the electrical measurements show that the film was n-type. The optical properties of the film were studied using measurements from VIS-UV spectrophotometer at wavelength range (300-1100) nm; the optical characterization shows that the films have an average transmittance 55% in the VIS regions. The refractive index was calculated as a function of the photon energy, also the calculated optical energy gap was 3.3 eV and 3.1 eV for direct and indirect allowed transition respectively.

يعتبر أوكسيد الخارصين(ZnO) نموذج من إحدى أشباه الموصلات ضمن المجموعة II-VI والتي لها مدى واسع في التركيب النانومتري Nanostructures)). في هذا البحث, تم تحضير أغشية رقيقة من أوكسيد الخارصين المتعدد التبلور على أرضية زجاجية بدرجة حرارة أساس 400 °C وذلك باستعمال تقنية الرش الكيماوي الحراري, تم تحضير محلول الرش من كلوريد الخارصين بمولارية مقداره 0.1 M/L.تم دراسة ومناقشة خواص وتركيب الأغشية المحضرة حيث تم فحص الأغشية المحضرة بواسطة حيود الأشعة السينية ومن تحليل النتائج تبين أن جميع الأغشية المحضرة هي نوع متعددة التبلور. (Polycrystalline), تم حساب الحجم الحبيبي لها عند الأتجاه (002) وكانت قيمته 27.9 nm. ومن دراسة الخواص الكهربائية (والتي شملت قياسات تأثير هول والتوصيلية الكهربائية) تبين بأن الغشاء نوع n - type تم دراسة الخواص البصرية لأغشيةZnO باستعمال مطياف يعمل ضمن الأطوال الموحية المرئية وفوق البنفسجية .VIS-UV إشتملت دراسة الخواص البصرية على تسجيل طيفي الامتصاصية والنفاذية للأغشية المحضرة لمدى الأطوال الموحية nm 300-1100, أظهرت الدراسة البصرية بأن معدل النفاذية يقترب من 55% عند المدى المرئي. تم حساب معامل الإنكسار كدالة لطاقة الفوتون عند للأطوال الموحية المذكورة. تم أيضا حساب قيم فجوة الطاقة البصرية وكانت قيمتها للانتقال الإلكتروني المباشر المسموح3.3 eV وللإنتقال الإلكتروني الغير مباشر المسموح 3.1 eV.

Abstract

The study was conducted in Mosul during the period from february to april 2009 including non-married and pregnant group composed of 35 and 105 apparently healthy women respectively, pregnant group were subdivided equally according to their trimester into three subgroups, women in second and third trimester are having ferrous sulphate in their ingestion. Serum zinc measurement were done for these groups of women. The results showed that serum zinc concentration start to reduce significantly during second trimester continue to decline in third trimester in comparison with non-married group. Therefore, it is recommended to measure serum zinc during pregnancy with use of optimal dose of zinc supplemental therapy.

أجريتْ الدراسة في مدينةِ الموصل خلال الفترةِ مِنْ فبراير/شباطِ إلى أبريل/نيسانِ 2009 متضمنة مجموعه من النساء غير المتزوجات والحبالى متكونة من 35 و 105 امرأة على التوالي. مجموعة الحبالى قُسّمتْ بالتساوي طبقاً لثُلثِ الحملِ إلى ثلاث مجاميع فرعيةِ, وان النِساء في الثلثين الثاني والثالث من الحمل كُنَ يتناولن كبريتات الحديدوز وتم قياسُ تركيزِ الخارصينِ لمصل الدم لهذه المجاميع من النساء. دلت النتائج على أن تركيز الخارصينِ لمصلِ الدم بدا بالانخفاض المعنوي أثناء الثُلثِ الثانيِ من الحمل وواصلُ الهُبُوط في الثُلثِ الثالثِ بالمقارنة مع مجموعة غير المتزوجات. لذا يُوصي البحث بقياس الخارصينِ لمصلِ الدم أثناء الحمل و استعمال علاجِ الخارصينِ الداعم بجرعٍ مثاليةِ

Abstract

Electro coagulation treatment was used for zinc removal from electroplating -wastewater of the State Company for Electrical Industries, This wastewater, here consists zinc ions with maximum concentration in solution of 90 ppm.The parameters that influenced the wastewater treatment are: current density in the range 1—1.4 mA/cm, pH in the range 5-10, temperature in the range 25—45°C and time in the range /0—180 minute.The research is a laboratory experimental type using batch system for electrical process with direct current. The cell comprised of aluminum electrode as anode and stainless steel electrode as cathode. Thirty experiments and one hundred fifty sample lab tests were carried out in this research to study the effect of the mentioned paramet cr5 on the efficiency of the removal process.Experimental work of this research proved a higher efficiency about 95 % removal of zinc from wastewater at 1.4 mA! cm in alkaline media atpH equal and Mmperature 45°C.

Abstract

Background: Herpes simplex virus type 1 causes recurrent herpes labialis, a common disease afflicting up to 40% of adults worldwide. A randomized, double–blind trial was conducted to compare the effectiveness & the patient tolerance of topically applied 0.5% zinc sulphate suspension with those of a placebo in the treatment of herpes simplex lesion.Patients & Methods: Sixty patients were enrolled in this study. The effectiveness & symptomatic relief of pain were recorded and Fisher exact test were used.Results: The zinc sulphate group showed significantly complete healing (p=0.001) than the placebo group & pain free during the follow-up period. The zinc sulphate group showed significantly better than the placebo group during the follow-up period. The safety that has been recorded of the drug were satisfactory, there is no pain with zinc sulphate group, no side effects.Conclusion: Topically applied 0.5% zinc sulphate suspension is an effective drug for the treatment of herpes simplex lesion in a short period with pain less.

Abstract

The aim of this Study was to investigate the effects of Toxoplasma gondii infection on levels of zinc and copper in seropositive toxoplasmosis women in Mosul city. Serum zinc and copper levels were measured in (77) women whose –Toxoplasma gondii antibodies were Positive , in addition to (30) sero – negative healthy women , as control group. The average zinc concentration in serum from sero – positive women was significantly ( P < 0.05) lower than control group. Howevor compared to the healthy women , the copper concentration in serum of sero-positive women were significantly ( P <0.05) higher.

الغرض من الدراسة هو معرفة تأثير الإصابة بطفيلي المقوسات الكوندية في مستويات الزنك والنحاس في أمصال النساء المصابات بداء القطط في مدينة الموصل . تم تقدير مستويات الزنك والنحاس في أمصال (77 ) امرأة مصابة بداء القطط إصابة حادة وفي أمصال (30) امرأة غير مصابة اعتبرت مجموعة سيطرة . كان معدل تركيز الزنك منخفض وبشكل معنـــوي ( P<0.05) في أمصال النساء المصابات بداء القطط مقارنة بمجموعة السيطرة في حين كان تركيز النحاس مرتفع وبشكل معنوي(P<0.05) في أمصال النساء المصابات مقارنة بالسيطرة

Abstract

ABSTRACT:The study demonstrated that zinc affected the liver cells by giving the mice particular doses of zinc as Znso4. The mice were divided into four groups of 6 mice each. Both of moderate and high dose groups showed various degrees of degenerative changes in the hepatocytes, such as increased size and the presence of spaces, dark appearance of the cytoplasm, whereas none of these changes were present in both group I (controls) and group II (low dose group) .BACKGROUND:According to previous studies, there is a correlation between certain doses of zinc and the changes that may occur in the liver cells.METHODS:The study was conducted on mice, which were divided into four groups of six mice each. Group I received tap water during the entire period of experimentation (30 days), group II, group III and group IV were received 5 mg, 10 mg and 15 mg/Kg body weight zinc as Znso4 consecutively (orally and daily) . Sections of livers were made and examined by light microscope.RESULTS:Zinc affected liver cells (hepatocytes) in mice under certain doses. Group III and group IV animals which received 10 mg and 15 mg/kg body weight zinc as Znso4 consecutively showed various degrees of degenerative changes in the hepatocytes, such as increased size and the presence of spaces, dark appearance of the cytoplasm. The degree of these changes was more abundant in liver cells of high dose group in comparison with the changes in liver cells of moderate dose group, whereas none of these changes were present in both group I (controls) and group II (low dose group) which received tap water and 5mg/kg body weight zinc consecutively .CONCLUSION:Certain doses of zinc could cause damages to the liver cells.

Abstract

This experiment was designed to elicit the effect of zinc on the hematological picture and the histological effect on heart, kidney and liver of the domestic ducks. The birds were divided into two groups of eight birds each. The first group was the control group and the second one was the treated group in which the birds were fed the zinc sulphate as 100 mg/kg with food for four weeks.The results showed a decrease in hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, and MCHC. And an increase in red blood cells blood cholesterol,GOT and GPT. Histologicaly, the results showed a hydropic degeneration in the myocardial and renal cells beside a fatty degeneration in the liver texture
