Introduction: Diagnosis is one of the important skills for dental students. During their clinical training dentalstudents make diagnostic mistakes, which are expected because of limited knowledge and experience. Despitethe fact that these diagnostic problems are usually addressed during the clinical training in the final two years, the exact reasons for diagnostic inaccuracies made by students have not been investigated thoroughly in Iraqidental schools.Aim: The aim of the study is to identify factors influencing the appropriateness of diagnostic procedure by studentsperforming dental extraction.Material and methods: Eight Selected items from the case sheet of the Department of Oral Surgery were usedto evaluate the student’s accuracy of surgical diagnosis. Seventy eight dental students were included in the study. After completion of surgical (dental extraction) procedure, each student was asked about the reason behind thediagnosis. Results: Documentation of selected items reported as follows: chief Complaint (CC) field was neglected in 9%;history of present illness has been neglected in 73 case sheets (93.6%). Chi square test, however, showed nosignificant relationship between history taking (CC and HPI) and the accuracy of diagnosis. Extraoral clinicalexamination included lymph node (LN) examination, which was reported in 42 cases (53.8%); and facial swelling, which has been reported in 45 (57.7) cases. Intra oral examination items reported as follows: cavity probingwas documented in 33 (42.3%) cases; tooth percussion for tenderness documented in 50 (64.1%) cases;examination for tooth supporting structure reported in 46 (59%) cases. Chi Square Test did not show significantrelationship between both extra and intra oral examination and the accuracy of diagnosis (p>0.05, df=12). 56students, however, made their diagnosis by guess rather than accurate diagnosis process. How about the differencesyou observed by gender? Conclusion: There is an obvious lack of documentation in both history taking and clinical examination. This mightnegatively influence proper diagnostic procedure.

Background Bracket bond failure is one of the major clinical dilemmas in orthodontic specialty that directly affect the success of the orthodontic treatment. Objectives The objectives of the present study were to assess the effect of oral hygiene status of the patients wearing fixed orthodontic appliances on the bond failure rate of thebracket. Materials and Methods Twenty-four patients (14 females, 10 males) with age range (14-25 years) were participants and fixed orthodontic appliances were placed for them. Oral hygiene status was assessed using Orthodontic Plaque Index (OPI) with a score from zero to four. The OPI was evaluated in each patient at follow up visit three-week apart during a six-month observation period. Each bond failure (other than due to trauma) was documented on a data collection sheet remarking the date and tooth type. The effect of OPI scores on the bond failure rate was evaluated. Any relation between the age of the patient, gender, dental arches, sides and tooth type with the deboning behavior was evaluated and the data were analyzed statistically. Results The highest percentage of bond failure rate was apparent with oral hygiene scores three and four. The male and younger patients showed a higher percentage of bond failure. The maxillary arch exhibited a higher percentage of bond failure. Regarding tooth type, both maxillary right lateral incisors and canines had higher percentage of bond failure. Conclusion Maintaining good oral hygiene during the course of orthodontic treatment has a crucial role in the success of bond strength. Bond failure rate varies according to age, gender, dental arch, and tooth type.

Background Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is an uncommon vascular neoplasm. Objectives This study was designed in order to review and summarize published cases with oral HPC since 1949, and unpublished cases from histopathological centers in Kurdistan region/Sulaimani/Iraq. The specifc objective is to correlate cases related medical data with treatment option and prognosis. Materials and Methods A web-based search was initiated for published articles and case reports by using PubMed, and Google. Another search was done in the database of histopathological centers in Sulaimani. Results Two new cases of oral HPC diagnosed in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology - Dentistry College - Sulaimani University were reported in details. Literature review disclosed sixty-six HPC of the oral cavity and additional fve cases were reported from Sulaimani (total 71 cases). Male to female ratio was 1:1.5, with a wide age range from newborn to 91 years, 50% of oral HPC was between 15 and 51 years. The tongue was the most common site that HPC originated from, then jawbones, and buccal mucosa. Neither sex nor age seems to have any effect on the outcome of oral HPC (p>0.05). HPCs that originate from oral mucosa including 13 cases from buccal mucosa and gum were benign, while jaw bones HPC was with malignant behavior in six cases. The behavior of twenty-six cases was not recorded. Different sites had no effect on the tumor outcome (p=0.08). Most cases which were treated only by surgery showed no recurrence (p=0.01). Conclusion HPC has a high rate of recurrence with undeterminable malignant potential, and require surgical excision with adequate margins and long-term follow up.

Background Dental Caries is the most prevalent oral disease among children caused by Streptococci mutans, which produces acids that cause tooth surface breakdown and subsequent formation of cavity which encourage growth of bacterial bioflms and cause the gingivitis. Objective The aim was to assess the prevalence of dental Caries and severity of gingivitis among school children and to correlate it with the Streptococcus mutans counts. Materials and Methods Five hundred and eighty (580) school children participated in this study. Dental caries was evaluated by the decayedmissing flled Index (dmft) while gingival index was used for assessed gingival health status. Snyder test was used to determine dental caries activity, Microbial counts of Streptococcus mutans were recorded for each group. Results the study indicates that the prevalence of dental caries had decreased with age from (93.2%) in group A students (7-9 years) to (88.3%) and (85.7%) in group B (10-12 years) and group C (13-15 years) respectively. The mean dmft values have increased with age from 4.5 in group A students to 4.8 in group B and 5.1 in group C. Prevalence of gingivitis increased with age, the mean gingival score were between 1.7 and 2.2. The count of Streptococcus mutans had been increased with age ranged from 4.2×104 cfu/ml to 2×105 cfu/ml and children with severe inflammation gingivitis are more likely to have high counts of Streptococcus mutans. Conclusion Bad oral hygiene and moderate gingivitis are highly prevalent among school children. No correlation was found between the mean dmft and the number of Streptococcus mutans (cfu), High Streptococcus mutans levels showed directly co-associated with increased severity of gingivitis at older ages, indicated a positive correlation was found between the presence of gingivitis and the number of S. mutans.

Background There are three types of carrageenan available (iota, kappa, and lambda) which differ in composition and degree of sulfation in polymeric structure. A malignant lymphocytes that accumulate in lymph nodes causes a group of diseases called Lymphomas causing the characteristics lymphadenopathy. These may pelt over into the blood or infltrate organs outside the lymphoid tissue. They are Hodgkin›s lymphoma and non–Hodgkin›s lymphoma and this is based on the histologic presence of Reed-Sternberg cells in Hodgkin›s lymphoma. Objectives The present study designated to determine the oral manifestations after application of carrageenan in patients with Hodgkin›s& Non-Hodgkin›s lymphoma receiving chemotherapy and to determine the effect of topical carrageenan on the levels of salivary immunoglobulin A, interleuekin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α in Hodgkin›s & non-Hodgkin›s lymphoma patients. Results The oral manifestations was in Non-Hodgkin›s lymphoma patients (64%) and in Hodgkin›s lymphoma patients (36%) taste alteration, followed by burning mouth syndrome, dry mouth and lastly candidiasis with signifcant differences after application of carrageenan p>0.05.The levels of salivary immunoglobulin A, interleuekin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α were slightly decreased but not signifcantly differences after carrageenan application. Conclusions The carrageenan effects on oral lesion may allow the use of Κ –carrageenan as a base or primary compound in dental practice besides the other compounds like chlorhexidine. The salivary immunological markers level slightly decreased in lymphoma patients after receiving carrageenan which indicate that there is no absorption from oral mucosa.

Introduction: Understanding parental perceptions about early childhood oral health is important inorder to develop effective preventive measures since parents’ health behaviours and practices usuallyhave a direct influence on their children’s dental health. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluateparental views about the primary teeth, first dental visit, and use of behaviour modification at the time ofa first clinical visit. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among parentswho brought their children to the Paediatric Dental Clinic at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia.Parents completed a close-ended interviewer-administrated questionnaire (n=110). The questionnairehad eleven items addressing knowledge and attitudes towards the importance of primary teeth, effectsof early extractions, and the main reason to visit the dentist for the first time. It also assessed views onappropriate treatment for decayed primary teeth, methods used to prepare children for their dental visit, and the timing of first dental visit. Data were analyzed using descriptive, frequency and Chi-Squareanalysis. Results: Overall, 82.3% of parents recognized the importance of primary teeth. However, only(12.5%) were aware that the first dental examination should be by age 12 months. Regarding treatingprimary teeth with decay, 47.9% thought that these teeth should be restored, whereas 37.5% believedextractions were appropriate. Two-third of parents (67.7%) had agreed to promote behaviourmodification during the first visit if their children had no pain. Conclusion: Many parents realised theimportance of primary teeth, however, lacked the sufficient knowledge on how to appropriately dealwith these teeth with caries and the recommended time for first dental visit. Hence the parents mustreceive appropriate anticipatory guidance and also need to appreciate the benefits of early dental visit tothe oral health and well-being of children.
